My housemate is currently playing a recording of the old hymn "Abide with me" in the next room. The memories of watching FA cup finals with the family as a child come flooding back. This lovely old hymn is dripping with nostalgia if you are English but I understand it might not mean very much to those who aren't.
I just found this example of Abide with me on Utube. It was made for a BBC programme on the 50th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. I hope it moves you as much as it did me.

"Abide With Me" is a very beautiful hymn, but I've only ever heard it sung at funerals. I've been listening to Carole King lately and her rendering of "I felt the earth move under my feet" fans the coals of something in me. It's an oldie, but a goodie. A female friend of mine who sings in a band says that this number is pretty hard to sing.

I went through a period years ago when I listened to the whole Tapestry album obsessively. Haven't thought about it in years, but now that you've reminded me, I'll have to dig it out. I may actually have to buy it, either on CD or on iTunes, as I think all I have is vinyl, and no current way to play it.

well you got me scooching round YouTube again...found this one for Lia
Ohgodogodohogodohgod. I think I just broke an ovary.
I can handle David Bowie alone without completely schputting myself to ribbons. Barely. Only just. I can handle Alan Rickman alone without completely schtupping myself to ribbons. Barely. Tenuously. Together, when immaculately and seamlessly fused, they orchestrate a cunning coup d'etat in my pristine pants mighty, grandiose and revolutionary enough to annex Warsaw.
Fucking hell. I'm now going to the top of your army of sycophants, Liandra, and beg to have your babies.

Hey,
I really want to hear her sing right away. I've never heard of her. I live in the USA.
Can I get a CD of her at a place like Barnes&Noble?

That I don't know but you can order them over the net from her own website:
www.katerusby.com.
Or of course from Amazon:

If I had to recommend one album I would probably suggest "Underneath the Stars" but that is just a personal choice

I was just listening to Alanis Morisette and came across this song. I thought of this forum and this song perhaps reflects what we try to strive for:
"Utopia"
we'd gather around all in a room fasten our belts engage in dialogue
we'd all slow down rest without guilt not lie without fear disagree sans judgement
we would stay and respond and expand and include and allow and forgive and
enjoy and evolve and discern and inquire and accept and admit and divulge and
open and reach out and speak up
This is utopia this is my utopia
This is my ideal my end in sight
Utopia this is my utopia
This is my nirvana
My ultimate
we'd open our arms we'd all jump in we'd all coast down into safety nets
we would share and listen and support and welcome be propelled by passion not
invest in outcomes we would breathe and be charmed and amused by difference
be gentle and make room for every emotion
we'd provide forums we'd all speak out we'd all be heard we'd all feel seen
we'd rise post-obstacle more defined more grateful we would heal be humbled
and be unstoppable we'd hold close and let go and know when to do which we'd
release and disarm and stand up and feel safe
this is utopia this is my utopia
this is my ideal my end in sight
utopia this is my utopia
this is my nirvana
my ultimate

Well found Adagio. It might have been written for us. Which album is it on? We should adopt it as the official IFM theme song.

Hi!
I've recently been revisiting my Jeff Buckley CDs and thought I'd like to share what I consider to be some of the most hearfelt lyrics ever written. (Hope the song is not too depressing! - as I understand that Jeff wrote this song the evening after a relative's funeral, at a time when his girlfriend had left him following a "daliance" that he was bitterly regretting).
His vocal style might not be everyone's cup of tea - most people I know either love him or hate him, I don't think there is a lot of middle ground. Love or hate, there is no denying that the world lost a supremely talented guy when he tragically drowned in May 1997.
"Lover, You Should Have come Over" (Lyrics and music: Jeff Buckley)
Looking out the door I see the rain fall upon the funeral mourners
Parading in a wake of sad relations as their shoes fill up with water
Maybe I'm too young to keep good love from going wrong
But tonight you're on my mind so you never know
Broken down and hungry for your love with no way to feed it
Where are you tonight, child you know how much I need it
Too young to hold on and too old to just break free and run
Sometimes a man gets carried away, when he feels like he should be having his fun
And much too blind to see the damage he's done
Sometimes a man must awake to find that really, he has no-one
So I'll wait for you...And I'll burn
Will I ever see your sweet return
Oh will I ever learn
Oh lover, you should have come over
'Cause it's not too late
Lonely is the room, the bed is made, the open window lets the rain in
Burning in the corner is the only one who dreams he had you with him
My body turns and yearns for a sleep that will never come
It's never over, my kingdom for a kiss upon her shoulder
It's never over, all my riches for her smiles when I slept so soft against her
It's never over, all my blood for the sweetness of her laughter
It's never over, she's the tear that hangs inside my soul forever
Well maybe I'm just too young
To keep good love from going wrong
Oh...lover you should have come over
'Cause it's not too late
Well I feel too young to hold on
And I'm much too old to break free and run
Too deaf, dumb and blind to see the damage I've done
Sweet lover, you should have come over
Oh, love well I'm waiting for you
Lover, you should have come over
'Cause it's not too late.
The verse that is in italics, to me perfectly encapsulates "the little things that mean so much", but that we all take for granted and only really appreciate when we are forced, for whatever reason, to be away from a lover, either temporarily or permanently.
(Hope that's not too deep - cheerful aren't I?)
There's a Youtube link below with a live performance of the song below if anyone is interested:

I'll try to find a more cheerful song next time! However, to me great music of any genre has to move me, either lyrically or musically or preferably both - IMHO the greatest music makes the hairs on the back of the neck stand up!

It's been a while since I've posted here, but if you can find Jeff Buckley's cover of "The Boy With a Thorn in His Side" on Limewire or whatev's, it's highly recommended.

I have previously thanked The_Elfman for introducing me to the rather wonderful Kate Rusby via this thread and thought it about time I reciprocated by sharing a couple of Youtube videos of my favourite female singer/songwriter of the last 18 years, a certain Julia Fordham.
I first saw Julia live at a showcase gig at Leeds City Varieties in 1988 promoting the release of her debut CD and now, all these years later, I am still in love with her voice, her music and, if truth be known, probably with Julia herself. She has been a permanent fixture in my CD player ever since.
Julia is English, but has lived in the States (Los Angeles, I believe) for a few years now - our loss and definitely the States' gain
Anyway, for anyone even slightly interested:
"Love Moves In Mysterious Ways" (1992) - (from "The Butcher's Wife soundtrack):

" Manhattan Skyline" (1989):

"I Can't Help Myself": (1994)

Go on - have a listen! - You know you want to....and if nothing else, it will pass the time before tomorrow's video is available for download
P.S. Link to Julia's official website, which features "Radio Julia" - well worth a listen for Julia's more recent output.

Johnny Cash - American III. I picked it up cheap along with a bunch of old westerns a few weeks ago at the fathers day sales and am finally getting around to listening to it. A bit patchy but some great songs and a good cover of The Mercy Seat which I was doubtful of as I love the original.
