My housemate is currently playing a recording of the old hymn "Abide with me" in the next room. The memories of watching FA cup finals with the family as a child come flooding back. This lovely old hymn is dripping with nostalgia if you are English but I understand it might not mean very much to those who aren't.

I just found this example of Abide with me on Utube. It was made for a BBC programme on the 50th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. I hope it moves you as much as it did me.

"Abide With Me" is a very beautiful hymn, but I've only ever heard it sung at funerals. I've been listening to Carole King lately and her rendering of "I felt the earth move under my feet" fans the coals of something in me. It's an oldie, but a goodie. A female friend of mine who sings in a band says that this number is pretty hard to sing.

I went through a period years ago when I listened to the whole Tapestry album obsessively. Haven't thought about it in years, but now that you've reminded me, I'll have to dig it out. I may actually have to buy it, either on CD or on iTunes, as I think all I have is vinyl, and no current way to play it.

I've recently been revisiting my Jeff Buckley CDs and thought I'd like to share what I consider to be some of the most hearfelt lyrics ever written. (Hope the song is not too depressing! - as I understand that Jeff wrote this song the evening after a relative's funeral, at a time when his girlfriend had left him following a "daliance" that he was bitterly regretting).

His vocal style might not be everyone's cup of tea - most people I know either love him or hate him, I don't think there is a lot of middle ground. Love or hate, there is no denying that the world lost a supremely talented guy when he tragically drowned in May 1997.

The verse that is in italics, to me perfectly encapsulates "the little things that mean so much", but that we all take for granted and only really appreciate when we are forced, for whatever reason, to be away from a lover, either temporarily or permanently.

I'll try to find a more cheerful song next time! However, to me great music of any genre has to move me, either lyrically or musically or preferably both - IMHO the greatest music makes the hairs on the back of the neck stand up!

I have previously thanked The_Elfman for introducing me to the rather wonderful Kate Rusby via this thread and thought it about time I reciprocated by sharing a couple of Youtube videos of my favourite female singer/songwriter of the last 18 years, a certain Julia Fordham.

I first saw Julia live at a showcase gig at Leeds City Varieties in 1988 promoting the release of her debut CD and now, all these years later, I am still in love with her voice, her music and, if truth be known, probably with Julia herself. She has been a permanent fixture in my CD player ever since.

Julia is English, but has lived in the States (Los Angeles, I believe) for a few years now - our loss and definitely the States' gain

Johnny Cash - American III. I picked it up cheap along with a bunch of old westerns a few weeks ago at the fathers day sales and am finally getting around to listening to it. A bit patchy but some great songs and a good cover of The Mercy Seat which I was doubtful of as I love the original.
