Some people find it very hard to orgasm without a vibrator and sometimes wonder how people like them managed with out them and they feel dependant on a piece of high tech not really very planet freindly engineering.
That's when I had this brilliant idea!!! in a low tech society a simple archers bow can make very good vibrations and applying one end to the area to be stimulated could I think be pretty successful if the bow is made for masturbating.
Just take a a piece of wood, bend it into a bow, add a bow line and you can vary the vibrations by how long or tight it is and how hard you twang it
So if that's successful and I'm 90% cock sure it would be Many peoples orgasmic sexuality wouldn't be dependant on electricity or factories or plastics and oil. and I'm 90% sure this was done in the past it must have been because these devices would be made of wood and so none have survived. and if they have we'd only look at it and think it was some kind of weapon. Yeah you can place a simple string bow on a tea chest and you have a bass, so there are some powerfull vibrations right there. I'm exited, I think this could change the camping wilderness experience forever

Truly Brilliant Blissed! One that deserves to be properly tested in the wild.
That is a great question.
What DID everyone do back in the day? Following your train of thought.
-masturbation goes back to the beginning of time
-batteries have only been around for a hundred years or so
-there is no way on God's green earth women and men weren't inventing ways to make it feel even better.
-the hunt would be on for "what could I make or find that vibrates just right"
"Hon, would you mind if I borrowed your bow, just for a few minutes".
Love the idea of adjusting tension until it was just right.
I can imagine musical instruments were also brought into play. Some prehistoric version of a mouth harp. I would think Tuba's would be great but inconvenient. Adds new meaning to perfect pitch.
Took a quick search for "ancient vibrators", best I could find were 30,000 year old dildos (which apparently were described by puritan archeologists as "strange cylindrical statues with rounded tops for an unknown purpose"), a mention of riding in a cart over bumpy cobblestones, and the bizarre world of cures for "female hysteria" in the 1800's and the attendant hand cranked vibrators. Not to mention a water jet device that is truly frightening:

THAT was one strange period of medical science.

Thanks Scott. High frequency vibrations like a mouth harp could be useful and if you've ever held a tuning fork against your skin you can feel high frequency vibrations. But if you look at this you can see a vibrator uses low frequency vibrations. http://www.shopinprivate.com/howdoesvibwo.html
A resonating chamber would be great and a double bass produces the right frequency and strength but is engineered with a huge resonating chamber to project the sound and dampen vibrations at it's leg, so it doesn't hop around like a vibrator does if you turn it on and set it on a table. But a bass could be engineered to be silent with a resonent chamber designed to release the low frequency vibrations at the leg. It would be much skinnier than a double bass because it's not moving air but retaining and channeling all the vibration within it, so more like just the kneck of a long bass with a very thick string and a slim resonent chamber at the bottom that tapers as it concetrates the vibrations to the bottom tip and the one place that contacts your body. At the top is a hook so it hangs from the ceiling and you only have to position it and play it rather than carry it. The tuning key is at the bottom end so you can reach it and it's used sitting and played a little like plucking a cello as it sits between your legs. I would think a physics engine in a computer could design an acoustic vibrator easily. and the quality of the vibrations as the string resonates I think would be gorgeous, and as with any stringed instrument a direct response to your playing and so an expression of your mood. I love acoustic instruments like cellos and something of that quality crafted from wood that produces an orgasm would be so cool.

You have thought this through. There would be a market (albeit limited) for this if done well like you describe. It would like like a beautiful piece of woodwork hanging in the corner with a secret purpose.
Imagine the tease that would come from the dissipating vibration. You would pluck and the vibration would be intense, but then gently lessen over time, and your body would chase the feeling. So instead of being overwhelmed by a constant vibration, your body would be begging for more as it slowly lessened. And your sensitivity would build. And then you would pluck again and it would feel even more intense, and then you would chase it again. With multiple strings you could play chords; a very different experience than the single frequency of a vibrator, you would be sensing all these different resonating frequencies at the same time.
Makes one wonder if you could do the same thing with recorded music; a connection between the music and us. A physical connection between a subwoofer and our clit or our cock, or something that we wear that vibrates with all the low frequencies of the music. A glass of wine, candles, naked, warm fire, no hands allowed, lying back to just the right song and just letting the music take you. Whoa.

I like the idea of an instrument which channels my breath just so that it increases in strength enough to turn me on by the time it reaches the conveniently placed, metallic bell thing that I could straddle. hahah... or you could play the instrument, and then I could tell you to "blow me, baby."

You've ALWAYS wanted to say that haven't you!

Ha ha the bass notes on a clarenet would do that. The vibration of the reed is resonated right down to masturbation frequencies. It would have to bend round and be ajustable. It would sound more like a didgery doo. In fact for partner sex a didgery doo would probably do it as long as the partners don't mind being 10 ft apart. Yeah blow me indeed! I see a duet IFM, Viva can you start writing the splurb for it

In all serious, I reckon a didge would work, but I can't imagine a bowstring or these other creative organic vibration solutions working, for me at least - and I am someone who a hitachi would be wasted on. I tend to use my vibes at the low end of the setting spectrum, but still, its like... electric and stuff. its impossibly fast... right?

Haha. Totally not my department. Unless, you want me to measure your streamflow, calculate the size of your lagoon, or--in a pinch--build you a dam my math and science skills are of limited use here.
I will say, however, that Blissed's idea is brilliant. I love the idea of having some sort of sound linked vibration. I'm not a huge fan of vibration, but I do have a thing for sound... especially when it's at quote"masturbation frequency".

Wait a minute. Richard. That's the person we should be asking. Isn't he an electronics engineer? I bet he can do Fourier transforms in his sleep.
If only he wasn't so busy with his other little side projects...

I think our subconscious does the best maths. Just build a really good physics engine in a supercomputer and mould the object in 3D virtually plucking the string until the instument resonates and so amplifies the vibrations at 60 hz the same as a bass drum and vibrator.
Actually! a bowed bass string will give you the constant drone of a didge. Watch as the low E string is bowed.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U6VwCBBj_h8
Using the full length of the bow on a much lower B1 piano string can totaly give you the vibrations of a didge because the energy from blowing is constant and a didge uses circular breathing to keep the drone constant. So either a didge that bends back on itself or an instrument using the b1 piano string and a resonating chamber that amplifies at 60 hz are the 2 choices for the armageddon proof acoustic vibrator. Job done
