If you just type 'Giger' into Google (Google.co.uk, that is - I'm not sure what the results from .com might be) and then click on 'Image Results' you'll get a fair few pages of the man's dark works. You can also go to www.giger.com for even more stuff.

Personally, I want a Harkonnen chair. Considering that it would cost more than all the rest of the furniture and contents of my flat combined, though, I'm slowly coming to the conclusion that I can't have one.

Which is shame. I'd love to sit in one of these watching the TV. And possibly wearing a fez.

Harkonnen. Did he design the "Dune" movie as well? I didn't like the film I have to admit but I love the books. Thanks for the hyperlink Pete.

Baron Vladimir Harkonnen was a character in the first Dune book, and the Dune movie. The chairs look like something he'd sit in, except that he wouldn't fit.

Actually, the movies displayed a completely different design sensibility for the Harkonnens than the book described, but that's David Lynch for you.

To be honest Warmtouch I only saw the movie once and didn't like it (isn't that usualy the way if you love the books?) and I don't remember it very well. The Giger design chair looks very "Harknonnenesque" to me though.

Obviously, that works better with lots of pustules and spitting.

The movie, with which I have a sort of gleeful love-hate relationship, had a long and difficult birth. There’s a nice summary of it on Wikipedia, a section of which I’ll include here:

Jodorowsky also hired newcomer Dan O'Bannon to head the special effects department. Dali and Jodorowsky began quarreling over money and just as the storyboards, designs, and the script were finished, the financial backing dried up. Frank Herbert travelled to Europe in 1976 to find that two million dollars were already spent, not a second of footage shot, and that the Jodorowsky script would result in a 14-hour movie. The rights for filming were yet again sold, this time to Dino de Laurentiis. To this day Jodorowsky states that the movie was taken from his hands because the project was French, not from Hollywood. Some of the designs were later used in the [i]Alien[i/] films.

Later on, of course, the job fell to David Lynch and Dino De Laurentiis. Giger’s designs for the film can be found if you look hard enough, but his Harkonnen furniture has become more iconic than anything from the real movie...

Jodorowsky, Dalí, Giger and Welles? With those kind of egos involved, it's a wonder they got as far as they did. Extremely talented men, naturally, but having them on the same project must have been like having Hitler, Churchill and Stalin trying to make a movie together.

It would probably be an interesting film though, if it ever got made.

Faintly on topic, I think Jodorowsky is an artist too, as well as a film maker and - I believe - some kind of alternative priest or something. He's a weird guy, and I like his films a lot. My favourite has to be "El Topo", a three hour surrealist sort-of Western with himself in the leading role. That one is a masterpiece, a word I try not to bandy about too much.

Oooh max I like your new avatar I think I'll give furry aminals a rest too. My new one is a frame of my self shoot. It's not up yet, I think they take a little while to change over, but all I can say is, if your ugly you need angles and I've got loads of them

Elf I love seeing 16th century paintings for real and even better 12th century because you sort of awe at how long those people have been dead and how similar they must have been to you.

Anyway, I've seen this painting (below) loads of times and haven't really noticed it because it's been so familier until One of my neighbours had a print of it hanging on their wall and I realized what a lovely picture it is. If the print is right it looks like a piece of jewelry almost, I don't think the goldiness really shows here. Anyway when I saw it hit the news and sold for $135 million dollars I thought that was amazing If you run a small gallery selling contemperary art, it's really really hard to sell and everyone thinks your making millions Actually, this painting is old yet it's amazingly contemperary and thats why I think it sold for so much. Anyway thats enough blabber from me

My favourite fantasy artist (and it's all about me, isn't it?) is Michael Whelan, whose images seem to me to convey more of a sense of, well, fantasy, than anyone else's.
