I would think it's because they were mostly shown to men in a public theater, so everyones balls went blue watching them.

'Blue' meant indecent, vulgar or obscene in the early 19th century.
Although there is several other different versions of why the term 'Blue Movie': apparently in China brothels used to be painted blue, blue spotlights were used for strip acts or possibly the most likely, pornographic films used to be shown on home projectors which gave the films a blue-ish tinge.
I'm sure google will yield yet more answers too.

In keeping with the Forum members great sense of humour, I personally think that the term Blue Movie, came from the fact that blue has always been associated with masculine, and pink with femmine. Therefore blue movies were made mostly for men ! ! ! ! and pink movies (although the demand was much less) for women :-))
blissed, I also love your answer, cheered me up and made me smile :-))
