Perchance to Dream

Last night I had the strangest dream. . . .

Actually, it was about par for the course. I'm having wild dreams lately.

So this is a place to talk about your dreams, when you want to. You can get Jungian about it, or analyze the heck out of them any other which way, or you can just use the thread to record the bare details somewhere.

Two requests: please be respectful of the posters, and please don't fabricate stuff to string people along!

Lately my dreams involve penises, usually erect, usually very large.
This time I was being given a tour of an industrial plant of some kind, and the owner, a mid-50's-ish, rumpled, overweight, nice guy in a suit, was my guide.

Meanwhile, there was some danger afoot; I had clearly committed a crime and had narrowly escaped being caught by the police. I don't know if I'd killed someone or desecrated something, but the guilt and sorrow were playing havoc in my mind. The tour guy was some kind of pal, a safe place, and as we were ascending a stairway, he brushed behind me on a half-rise landing and let me know he was aroused (something about the way his hands lingered at my waist).

Then he gestured for a deliveryman to do something, and, in the movement, allowed me to see behind the legal pad he had been keeping in front of him. There was a tent in his trouser flies, and I knew that soon enough, I would be bent over a stack of boxes somewhere, taking the measure of his desire.

That's all that I remember. It's the fourth or fifth dream involving penises in the past few weeks.

Re: Perchance to Dream

This may sound wierd, but I used to have dreams making love to my mother. She died a while ago and since then the frequency  of such dreams hasnt changed.

In reality nothing sexual ever happened between us. There is one more thing about those dreams; usually they would occur during early morning between 3-5 am. And  I would often wake up with an erect tent. One a few occasions, although very infrequently, I would also wake up with a wet mess in my shorts.

I have never discussed this with anyone or even mentioned it to any one and it troubles me what to make of these dreams.

In real life, I am particularly attracted to older women (40s-70s).

Re: Perchance to Dream

When I was a kid, I used to get regular dreams which went like this: All the men in the world died and I am left alone with all the beautiful women, wearing sleaveless blouses (yes sleaveless blouses). Although at that age, I didnt know what to do with all those women, but that didnt stop me from getting those dreams smile

wow. i've never had dreams of sex with my parents, though i have dreamt sexually about my youngest brother, whom i basically raised, on a number of occasions. those used to trouble me as well.

pretty intense, nibbler. i don't know what to say, other than that we've set the bar rather high here! lol  thanks a lot for sharing.

Re: Perchance to Dream

You didn’t say whether they had to be sex dreams Siobhan.  This one isn’t so I hope that’s OK.

For many years I would have a recurring dream about a bee.  I would have it about every 3 months or so.  The surroundings changed each time but essentially it was the same dream.  I would be sitting peacefully reading in a quiet, tranquil place (perhaps on a park bench) when I would become vaguely aware of a bee in the distance.  This caused me no alarm.  After a while I became aware that the bee was gradually getting closer and my apprehension level steadily grew.  Then at the climax of the dream the bee would fly past my ear and I would flick it away with the back of my hand and I would experience enormous relief.  That’s when I always woke up feeling completely relaxed and at peace.

Re: Perchance to Dream

wow, Elfman, how interesting. i've assumed that recurring dreams definitely have some meaning to get across to us. i wonder why you stopped having that partic. dream.

i know the jungian dream analysts think that the meaning resides even more in the phoetics of the words used to express the dreams' content as they do the content itself. if this were my dream, i think i would be looking at "be closer" and "be away" to see if they had something for me.

and no, no content restrictions on the dreams here; i guess it just happened that the first ones mentioned were sexual in nature. . . .

thx y'all for sharing...!

Re: Perchance to Dream

I won't do specific dreams, at least not right now, but there are a number of elements that appear so often in my dreams that they have to mean something, I guess. How, where and when they appear varies, but often all of them feature in the same dream:

Snakes: Usually poisonous ones, black or green. Last night I was teasing this incredibly aggressive green cobra that really looked more like a mamba.

Excrement: Always large quantities, often filling entire rooms or at least covering the floor. Sorry, but there seems to be nothing I can do to prevent this component from introducing itself.

Fighting: I often engage in hand-to-hand combat in my dreams, usually with a number of enemies at once. Sometimes there's the odd firefight to add a bit of variety, but most often it's fists, feet and knives, really.

Bad bulbs: I always dream of trying to turn the light on, but seldom does any lamp I try actually work. Once I had the same kind of dream, but with matches instead of lamps; somewhat innovative.

Floods: At least once a week I dream about the world coming to an end, usually through floods of biblical proportions; I once dreamed I was sailing through New York, and the very top of the Empire State Building just managed to protrude from the water.

There are more old stand-bys like this, but these are some of the flashier ones. Go ahead, call someone who removes people like me.

Burlesque.

Re: Perchance to Dream

man, this is amazing. You'd think we'd all have similar fears and dreams similar stuff, but it's all so different! I've never dreamt about light bulbs or snakes or excrement, OR -- even though my apt in nyc looks out onto it -- the empire state bldg! i have, however, had recurring dreams about being in large women's bathrooms with a bunch of strange women and where all the toilets don't work.

i'll look forward to tww's expert analysis -- though my dream was fairly inconsequential. who knows what tonight might bring. . . .

Re: Perchance to Dream

About twice a year I have a dream of being in a really tall, and for some reason rather rickety or incomplete, building which then collapses with me in it. I find myself terrified and wondering if I can possibly survive the fall, and then I wake up.

This long predates 9/11. I don't think it's a Freudian impotence dream (building = penis), I think it has something to do with my mild fear of heights. I don't mind going up in tall buildings or flying, and I like the view, but I find it scary to look over the edge straight down. I have this bizarre feeling that I might someday just go nuts and jump. I have no idea why looking over the edge should make me feel that way. Anyway, I think the dream must somehow relate -- as if the collapse of the building takes away my control over the situation.

That's about the only dream I have that recurs.

Re: Perchance to Dream

Yes, Warmtouch, now that you mention it, that's another thing that recurs in my dreams: heights and falling. In my case it's usually cliffs or mountainsides, but the feeling you describe is very similar to the one I get in those "situations", and like you, I don't mind flying or going up in tall buildings.

This semi-impulse to jump (or rather the fear that one may get such an impulse) is very common, I've heard. I have never experienced it myself, but I vaguely remember seeing a spot about it on TV a few years back.

The building represents your sphere of safety, which could be your family, business or ssocial group, and your notion that its framework is precarious.  You fear it will collapse and you wont' be able to cope.

The impulse to jump is your need to control the situation which is causing the fear.  Jumping is the certain way of avoiding falling.  I have had this as long as I can remember.  Many people are lost overboard from ships due to this and they call it 'railitis'.

Re: Perchance to Dream

I'm told on good authority that when you dream of excrement, you are or you're about to be in the shit - figureatively speaking.  My own dreams are pretty boring, but there is one that recurrs on a regular basis and if someone knows what it may mean, I would be grateful if they would share.  It involves being lost or losing something.  Usually a brief case, some clothes or my car.  In the case of the clothes I'm walking around naked from the waist down  looking for them - and there are always lots of people around.  And always I know where I left the lost articles.  But they're not there now and so the dream search ensues, endlessly, tiringly and frustratingly until I wake up exhausted in the morning.  I seldom dream anything sensual or erotic - more is the pity.

Could it be that, the empire state building that you see from your apartment day in and day out.. has something to do with large phallic structures in your dreams, lately? Although Warmtouch mentions against it.. I believe there is some connection.

On the other hand, would anyone living opposite a nice wooded ravine, dream of luxuriously hairy pussies?

I actually DO live opposite a nice wooded ravine, and I never dream of female genitalia, only male. I don't really dream about sex with women, either.

Just to clarify, I'm only in the apt in NYC two or three days a year.

Re: Perchance to Dream

I got some spare time earlier than I thought, so I'll have a go at answering some of these dreams. Though I must ask, if you would like me to read your dream, please be as specific as possible. My methods may differ from the average dream reader, but I take what I do seriously (I normally get paid for this, but I'm doing you guys a favour).
Siobhan, I'll start with you.

Siobhan wrote:

The industrial plant where your dream starts is similar to what Richard said, it is your sphere of safety. That is to say that a plant is where things are made and come together, where the action happens. (Am I right in saying that you are the artistic type? Do you like to use your hands?)
The older man is a mentor figure, like a teacher. Probebly a subcontious representation of an Art teacher. It would be taking things too far to say that he was a spirit guide. From what you have described so far, they dont work like that. There would have to have been some familiarity with this man as you two were on the same wavelength while he was giuding you around the plant.

You dont give much on what the actual crime was, but thats ok. Being on the run from the police is the same as running away from responsibility (as cleché as it sounds), you retreat to a safe place where you can hide (the plant millions of places to wait for the heat to pass) and this guide friend helps you. His arousal is a representation of an exchange. He helped you, now you help him. The nature of the crime you commited in your dream must have been pretty servere to warrent such a reward.
This is not a dream of a battle of control, it is a representation alterior motives. Becareful who you trust, but dont knock back a helping hand.

Hope this helped.

The Bee in your dream is a decision that needed to be made, but managed to be put off from time to time for one reason or another.
The bee offers you a choice depending on your decision:
Choose the right path and it will lead you to it's honey (a wanted outcome of a situation).
Choose the wrong path and you get stung. Sure the Bee dies, it's suffering is over, but you are left with a sting that lasts longer than what was left of the Bee's life (to bare the brunt of a decision that has gone wrong).

Though the Bee leaves you alone eventually. It's looming presence of a decision that must be made is still there. It will pass when you make that decision, regardless of the outcome.

Hope this helped.

Re: Perchance to Dream

If this thread had started off a week ago I doubt I’d have had anything to contribute. My dreams, while often detailed and vividly coloured, tend to be so uneventful that they are barely worth mentioning. They are also rare. I can count the number of dreams I’ve remembered this year on the fingers of one hand.

A few days ago, though, I did experience a dream that, while not in itself particularly noteworthy, had an intriguing and oddly affecting coda.

I’ll state at this point that – sorry to disappoint – this dream is not in any way erotic. I rarely dream of anything sexual, and on the rare occasions when I do the act always seems to take on a queasy, Dali-like fluidity. For example, many years ago I dreamed of an encounter with a woman whose sex began to extend outwards from her body in the form of a smooth, fleshy tentacle, questing like the trunk of an elephant. In the dream, I saw nothing unusual in this. I woke, of course, gripped by a shivering horror that remains with me to this day.

Moving swiftly on… The dream in question was, at its heart, about being lost. I had somewhere to go, some appointment to keep, but on the way I had taken a wrong turn and found myself in unfamiliar surroundings. I spent the rest of the dream running (without feeling any kind of fatigue), trying to find a place that I recognised. This is not to say that the dream was frightening, or that I was running in a panic. The places I ran through were pretty village greens, clean streets, rows of country cottages, all sharply detailed and rendered in brilliant colour. The people I met as I explored were at worst indifferent and at best friendly and helpful – one woman in particular suggested that if I went through her cottage and out into the back garden I would find where I needed to be. It was just a pity that, when I opened the back door I found that some local stream had burst its banks, flooding the surrounding area and rendering it impassable.

At one point a trio of dogs circled me as I trotted along, yapping excitedly, but I paid them little mind. They disappeared as I reached a street of interesting shops, but then I found that the shops had closed not a few minutes before. This, I decided, at least narrowed down when I was, if not where – if the shops had closed, if must be Sunday afternoon.

I don’t remember much more. I never got to where I needed to be. In dreams, who does?

During the next day I described this dream to my partner, during a conversation about such things. Nothing more was thought of it until, the following night, we were watching television together and saw on the screen a large stately home in the British countryside; an unusual building comprised of two symmetrical houses side by side. Something about the green space between them struck a chord of recognition, and I pointed the scene out to my companion. “There you, go,” I told her. “That dream I had – I ran through that bit. That was why I dreamed it! I must have seen it on TV…”

Which, again, would have not been worth repeating, had I not promptly woken up. And realised that I had been dreaming about the dream I’d had the previous night.

I’ve never experienced that kind of recursion before, and to be quite honest I hope I never do again. Despite the innocuous nature of the dreams themselves, their connection disturbed me in a way that’s difficult to describe.

I think, perhaps, that I’ve been watching too much television.
