Red Moon: Menstruation, Culture & the Politics of Gender

I saw this trailer and haven't seen the full thing yet
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yWwmhNWvhno

Just thought I'd share as it looks so interesting. Has anyone seen it? My copy is on order.

Re: Red Moon: Menstruation, Culture & the Politics of Gender

That's an interesting film. Would be lovely to have the  menstrual cycle respected and valued. There are a few people who'll say, you have to excuse me it's the time of the month and if I'm not eating chocolate I'm a bitch smile But it would be nice if people didn't have to put any effort in it and could just say you'll have to excuse me I'm menstruating. Penis owners don't get this problem, but there are a few who would have to say you'll have to excuse me I have high testosterone so I'm a bastard all the time smile

Re: Red Moon: Menstruation, Culture & the Politics of Gender

I also appreciated this trailer. I wonder how many men gave concise, normal answers vs. how many behaved as depicted. I would be surprised if most men behaved like children as was indicated by the trailer.

I think that for the most part people, both men and women would answer, or not, but in the same way they would react to out-of-the-blue questions about any intimate bodily function such as pissing or shitting or mucus buildup. Look, there's nothing wrong with menstruating, and when I have cramps or I'm cranky on my period I say, "ugh, it hurts, period wah" and someone offers me some advil and all's well.

People tend to feel about as much discomfort as I do, that is to say, in my experience it is the menstruating women who sets the tone for comfort levels around that topic. That said, I would never say "excuse me I'm menstruating." much in the same way I would not say, "Excuse me I'm urinating." I like my slang and slang encourages familiarity. Also I don't feel like people need to excuse themselves for menstruating, and if you are being a bitch your hormones are really no excuse.

How do you guys feel about tampons and pads and some occasional blood making an appearance in IFM videos?

She said if I'm not eating chocolate I'm a bitch as a joke to ease the embarrassment of having to announce her period. If the movie and others like it are successful she won't have to work to ease anyones embarrassment. There are people who do need to say when their mood is affected by their period because they don't want to misrepresent themselves and being able to just say that easily would be nice.

Viva,
I'd welcome it.  Cobain's Saturate is an amazing set of contributions for many reasons, including the memorizing dance the tampon string makes in the water.

Re: Red Moon: Menstruation, Culture & the Politics of Gender

Yeah, I'm not really talking about jokes, or directly refuting your example, when I mention making excuses for your mood.
Joking to lighten the mood or giving people a warning that your hormones are mad and you are more touchy than normal, is different than being a bitch and then justifying your actions by claiming hormones.

Absolutely I will make it clear if I'm on my period, if that is relevant, which it always seems to be. I get really bad cramps and go dead white for 2 days and curl up under my desk and stuff, if I do that without letting people know why, they worry. In fact if I can't help but display those things, short of staying home from work (and that aint gonna happen), it's actually bizarre if I am unable to say the reason why.

So, that's where I feel that everyone should be able to mention their period if they feel that is relevant, but ultimately the responsibility for comfort lies in the one who has her period. If I'm in a group of people and doubling over and go, "fuck, im so achey, wha period blar", and someone feels uncomfortable because I said that, that really is not my problem or responsibility. At very least, I hope that my general comfort will help others become more comfortable with things.

I mean face it, some people talk about the shape of their poo, how does that make you feel? It grosses me out, much in the same way talk of period blood grosses some people out. I will laugh and call that person gross and probably make a poo joke. Some people can't laugh, because they feel honestly uncomfortable. It is more necessary that period and blood talk is acceptable dinner conversation, than shit and piss talk?

What I'm saying is, women already don't have to keep their mouth shut. I think they can do what they want, and I am not sure, but I kind of think it's already not as taboo as this video claims. And that if more women decide their period is acceptable, guys won't really have a choice but to accept it.

My friend calls herself a bitch for being cranky and possibly hurtfully sarcastic. But yeah if you use hormones as an excuse for being a total ass that's not cool, especially if your forgetful and do it twice in a month smile

Re: Red Moon: Menstruation, Culture & the Politics of Gender

hehehe blissed, thanks for my morning giggle! perhaps the more accepted our periods are, the more often I can claim them. Like maybe even every week I could have a little one, just enough to stay home and whine a bit?

Troy, this is something really interesting to me, soooo interesting! I still don't know how I feel about all this. I feel shy about showing my period to others. I think you're right about Cobain's Saturate, very cool, and in Gala's first video diary she has a pad and is talking about her "period dress" and i love that too. still I don't find period things a turn on, more... touching... like seeing a really beautiful women taking off her makeup.

but then again IFM taught me to find girls peeing really quite hot, so who knows whats in store for my tastes.

Hehe, I know what you mean. My take on a contributor doing this would probably be that if masturbating during their period is something she does in her own life, and she is happy to portray it as part of her work on here in a way that's not purely a shock tactic, then why not?! It's all part of female sexuality, after all.

Girls peeing has always been a huge turn on for me. Who are these girls on IFM?

Silkworm,
the video here that made me love it is by gina cherie, and she pees gleefully in a hole and it is fabulous. just watch all her videos, really. and then check out the second part of my shower video to see how she inspired me.

and then jump over to ishotmyself.com to see Sequoia Redd's ISM video, part 3 and 4 of which are currently featured. she proves herself to be a true master of the female pissing technique. several times.

We have a video coming up that will certainly polarise the audience.  We'll put a disclaimer on it for the squeamish.
