Re: Scott Pilgrim vs. the World

I saw it! It was a lot of fun and pretty funny. I really enjoyed it, even though it didn't pass the Bechdel test! http://bechdeltest.com/

That's a shame because it looks so cool in many other ways. You can't expect every movie to pass it (Shawshank Redemption smile but Scott pilgrim has every oppurtunity to pass and doesn't, so there's some serious subconscious predjudice going on with the writers. I think that's more annoying right in the middle of something that's intension is to be new and present something cool.

I think Sarah Haskins would be brilliant in the lead role in Scott, perhaps fighting off a couple of macho gay x's too.

Re: Scott Pilgrim vs. the World

Oh yeah I really, really enjoyed the movie and would watch it again - I found it very funny and unique in certain ways. Highly recommend it for a fun movie.

However, in other ways, it was sadly formulaic. I certainly don't think it was conscious, but these days I feel hyper aware of the portrayal of women in mainstream movies and unfortunately, representations of women and stories about women are incredibly limited. Makes sense when most of the top hollywood directors are men but it still sucks.

I'm yet to see an awesome superhero movie with a female as the main character, for example (the girl in Kick Ass was totally awesome and I loved that movie for how hilarious and stereotype smashing it was, but she wasn't the main character) and that makes me sad.

Joss Whedon was going to make a female superhero movie, so I'm told, but funds were cut from that. So it basically means I have to watch superhero movies where women are always the love interest or whatever and that's really depressing for somebody who grew up watching Wonderwoman, Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Xena, Warrior Princess and wants to see more ass kicking women.
