Re: The Official IFM Comic Thread.

Ooo, I've not read any of those except for "Ghost World". Will have to look into them!

I agree, I feel that the Ghost World movie didn't live up to the comic... but that's pretty much always the case, I find.

I think you mean "Ghost World", ngaio. I think the movie was way too laboured over. I don't know if you checked out "Artschool Confidential", the movie, by the same creative team. Pretty interesting, and worth a watch. But yeah, please, please do yourself the favour of checking out "David Boring". I'd happily lend you my copy, but I'm in an undisclosed location, in a bunker somewhere, and sending stuff out is a real pain. I might be Dick Cheney circa The War On Terror.

You might also wanna check out Adrien Tomine's comics. I like intimate comics about people trying to figure things out, but "David Boring" really ups the ante by focusing on the fantasy of desire. It is an awesome, perfect, perfect dream comic.

What do you think of "From Hell", Alan Moore and Eddie Campbell's Jack The Ripper treatise, by the way?

Re: The Official IFM Comic Thread.

Opps, have fixed my mistake there. "Ghost Town" was a cute little movie starring the awesome Ricky Gervais.

Anyway, yeah, I've seen "Art School Confidential"... I don't know, I like it but found it a little lacking somehow. Perhaps because I've actually DONE the whole art school thing!

As for "From Hell"... I never actually finished that book. I read it during a pretty dark period in my life and found it was not helping at all with my state of mind. I love Alan Moore though and saw a talk Eddie Campbell gave about illustrating it so I've always meant to try it again. What do YOU think of it?

I've always wanted to watch "Ghost Town". It sounded great, and the film critic I respect the most in the entire world, Stephanie Zacharek from Salon.com, loved it. I should go and hire it. Apparently it is an anti-romcom romcom.

Anyways, I never finished "From Hell". I was too lazy. It took too long to get into it. But what I saw in the first couple of chapters I liked. It's a difficult book to fall in love with, though. Have you ever checked out Moore's "Top Ten", about a bunch of super hero cops in a city where every citizen has super powers? It's mega, like the best cop show ever. And not irritating and precious like something like "Heroes", for instance.

I will finish "From Hell" eventually, and report back on it. Right now, I'm stuck on "The House Of Mirth".

Re: The Official IFM Comic Thread.

Ghost Town was just a lovely and funny little film... but I tend to love most anything Ricky Gervais does after he won my heart with the original, British, series "The Office".

I've been meaning to check out Top Ten... have had it recommended to me a couple of times and I love Alan Moore so I really do need to.

You have good taste, RavenBarber!

What do you think of the US version of The Office? To my mind, the US version is the best sitcom of the decade. Arrested Development and Peep Show a close, tied second.

I don't think you'll be disappointed. It's funny and trippy as shit, and beautifully detailed.

Thank you, ngaio. It's part of my job to have "good taste", although at this point I think I might be a little too discerning. It's very difficult for me to get into anything without having some knowledge about it beforehand, or fantasising about it forehand, or being aware of its context, culturally and in its genre. I'm what you'd call a critic in everyday life, but I'm also pretty obsessed with criticism, and sometimes it can get in the way of spontaneity some. For instance, it is very difficult for me to be recommended things, especially by folks whose "stance" on things I might not completely trust, and that's not good.

Anyways, I'm very curious to know what some of your all time favourites are as pertaining to movies, music, books/comics, TV shows, and any other art field I may have overlooked. Maybe I'm suggesting a top 5 list. Maybe it's time for one of those. Maybe a top 5 list, or top 10 list is deserving of a thread of its own. What you say? Maybe its time to come clean about our proclivities and obsessions.

I gotta say, sometimes I'm a little uneasy about this thing of "taste", even within myself. Like, the cannon, type thing. I hate that "cannon" stuff, even though it might often be justified. For me it is so much more important that someone love something really passionately, and if they can communicate that even semi-articulately, I love to hear about it. Of course, there is always the off chance that they are madly passionate about something like Celine Dion, like my brother, and then I start to feel really uneasy.

Why don't you kick that thread off, and I'll look out for it and join in. Maybe a Top 5/10/12 (I like dozens more than 5's or 10's, but that's just me.) In fact, maybe I should just start it, because I'm a little excited about it. It would be so great to hear people enthusing about the things they love. Look out for it, and please join in.
