Just wondering what people here think about this.
I must say, I was stunned. I think he has potential, but he's hardly delivered on many of his promises yet. Surely they could have found someone more deserving this year and done a wait and see for a few years on Obama.
As someone said on one of the news sites, it's a bit like someone sending a script and the names of a few actors to Cannes and winning the Palm d'Or.

I like the guy, I'm cautiously optimistic about his presidency, but I really can't think of what he's done so far to deserve the Nobel Prize: the US is still fighting two overseas wars, Guantanamo is still open, global warming is still going strong, and everyone in the middle east still hates each other. My impression is that he is receiving the prize for being Someone Other Than Bush. Which is, in my opinion, a pretty good thing (if not exactly Nobel-worthy) to be.

Considering the Nobel Prize as an award: No, he did not deserve it (yet).
Considering the Nobel Prize as a burden for Obama: That may have been a good investment in our future.
Thinking about wasting time is a waste of time.

I hope y'all will forgive me for constantly pimping the Pharyngula blog here, but there's a long and mostly thoughtful thread about Obama and the Peace Prize here. I'm a huge Obama supporter (I was an active campaign volunteer, and stood in the cold with 2 million of my best friends on Inauguration Day), but I agree he hasn't yet achieved the kind of results that usually win the Prize. I suspect that the Nobel Committee is offering some combination of (1) an expression of a global sigh of relief over the fact that we Americans seem to have turned away from the dangerous national psychopathology that was the Bush years, and (2) what they hope will become a self-fulfilling prophesy. Note that Obama's comments about the prize were exceedingly humble, and reflected his understanding that it represents obligation and expectations, more than it does a reward for past results.
Also, maybe it's intended as something of a counterbalance against this kind of shit!

I think your probably right actually.
That dangerous worldview also explains why he has already gobbled-up major banks and why the government now controls more and more of our money - yours and mine
A currency is guaranteed by a government promising to pay the bearer, so money and capitalism has always been a government project. (ever heard of confederate bonds? :) So are land and property rights actually. Not realizing this has landed the world in the poo, and sorting that lot out is quite apart from the peacemaking! so I'm glad someone has given Obama both credit for what he's started and support for the future in what is probably the most difficult job in the world.

On first, not researched impressions I wonder if it's a way for the international community to sort of empower Obama’s mandate for change. It’s going to be pretty tricky trying to negotiate such change and a nobel prize may serve to help realise his intentions.

Oy. Politics? I think it's a bad idea on a site where we are supposed to be enjoying that which is beautiful.
Politics is hardly beautiful. It also brings out ugly things.
Do we really want to start a Bush vs. obama war here? I shall pass and crawl into my hole until the ugliness is over.

We've already been there :) Obama won! Yay!!
Anyway about this part of the forum. In the same way that not all art is pleasurable or beautiful, Lots of things that are of interest to an enquiring mind aren't either, and merit discussion because at least to someone they're genuinely interesting.

It is nice to talk about non-sexual issues from time to time. Politics and religion are always dangerous areas to enter. I guess that's what makes this thread interesting.
As far as President Obama wining the peace award? I have to agree with spiderboy posting. This world is still at war. And America is right in the center of it.
Terrorist are still killing anyone they can. So are we because our bombs are still falling on innocent people in Afghanistan & Pakistan.
But with Bush out, and Obama in, the world finally has a chance to slow down on the killing. It won't happen overnight. But at lease President Obama actually wants peace.
It is true that President Obama has not done much for world peace yet. But giving him that award might help him stay on the right road toward peace. Maybe we should call it an "incentive" award.
President Obama also made some promises to the gay & lesbian community here in the states. It seems a lot of politicians makes promises to the gay & lesbian community in an effort to get their votes. Then they forgets what they promised as soon as they are voted into office.
I hope President Obama isn't playing that game. I hope he does not forget those promises.
yes, yes...I know. He will have to fight congress, and the senate, to get anything done. But he needs to get into the ring and fight for the gays & lesbians who helped him get into the White House!

You still think oabama winning was a good thing? Oooookaaaayyy.
In the link below is a woman who deserved the Nobel. Unlike obama she has earned it and will continue to do so. I strongly doubt obama will ever do much that is positive or deserve such an award. Considering he is president, I am not happy about that.

Don't worry, I don't think he did or blame him for winning.
I'm not a conspiracy fan by any stretch of the immagination.
It's a bit disturbing they would throw away what little credibility they have left in an attempt to influence obama.

Actually, the Peace Prize has a long history of being awarded based on promise/hope for the future. Rachel Maddow had a nice riff on this recently.

Hey 3footlizard, that's the awesome thing about politics is that everyone has their own opinion for their own reasons, that is right *for them*.
There is no collective 'wrong' or 'right'.
And I'd also like to think this forum is a little bit more than a place where we talk about pretty things. I have many more brains than that.
Turn on. Tune in. Drop out.
