(Apologies pur la qualite de mon (ma?) francais; il y a bien longtemps que je n'ai pas eu l'opportunite de pratiquer (et je ne connais pas ou sont les accents sur cet keyboard!))

J'ai recu un email d'une jeune fille qui m'interesse romantiquement, ou elle m'apelle "mon ami du jour." Est-ce que cette phrase veut dire quelquechose de particulier colloquialement? Les traductions sur le web ne disent que "Friend of the day".

Thanks, Blissed; I guess you ran it through the same translator I used to try to figure out the phrase in the first place! A less tortured translation might be:

(Apologies for the poor quality of my French; I have not had an opportunity to practice it for a very long time, and I do not know where the accents are on this keyboard.)

I received an email from a girl I am romantically interested in, where she called me "Mon ami du jour." Does this phrase mean something particular colloquially? The translators on the web say only "Friend of the day."

The automatic translators suffer from an inability to resolve homonyms (ou means both "or" and "where", though it may need an accent to distinguish between them; as I say my French is very rusty!)

I would say that this girl mean that you were a "friend" In french there is no such expression for "un ami du jour" It seem to me that it is a translation from another language....to french... Hope that help you

Thank you Danygirl. In fact, since I posted the question I had an opportunity to ask her, and it turned out to be a personal habit (she will write "Bonjour, ami du jour" and "Bonsoir ami du soir" so it was not any particular significance after all. (I had heard the expression "Belle du jour" and wondered if it had any connection!)

And, yes, you could very well be the perfect person for me. I have noticed your posts, and you have a curiosity and an openness to new ideas and experiences that turns me on. (Also your picture is very cute!) I would like to have been there on the bus with you! If you are ever coming to California...

Elle est française, habitant Californie maintenant. Jusqu'ici elle n'est qu'une amie, mais j'espere que ça peut changer. Nous rions beaucoup quand nous sommes ensemble. J'ai essayé de faire un jeu de mots avec longue et langue; peut etre en englais je pourrai le faire, mais en français je suis insufisant. Merci pour tes souhaits.

She is French, living now in California. So far she is just a friend, but I hope that might change. We laugh a lot when we are together. I tried to come up with a pun with "longue" (meaning long) and "langue" (pronounced the same, but meaning either tongue or language) but my french is not good enough. Thank you for your wishes.
