In response to the perception that the industry has not done enough to protect its workers, the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, the largest non-profit HIV healthcare provider in the U.S. (which is based in Los Angeles) will be holding a protest tonight outside the Hustler Store on Sunset. The organization is calling for legislators to require mandatory condom use in porn films

Hmmm, what do you lot think? Obviously, it's not terribly relevant to IFM stuff but it just interests me.

Manditory condoms seem like a good idea. But you can say an indoor shot was filmed anywhere that doesn't require it and then you have sites like comstock films with real couples sharing and they have to wear a condom. You also have fake penises and fake semen which are suppose to be quite common in Japan and from a doc I saw about Japanese porn can be edited to look totally convincing with no worries about erection nerves, anyway you'd have to put condoms on those as well

My solution is to legally recognise the art of sexual fantasy film makers and so require them to have the same "duty of care" under health and safety regulations that any film maker (in the EU) must show, and just as importantly the people in their films will come to expect and be able to enjoy the protection of a health and safety officer who can decide what is to be done if a breach of health and safety has occurred. The important part would be the sex part of the new H&S regs, they would be sex positive and educated covering all fetishes and protect the welfare of all contributors to performances that include sex from mainstream cinema to specialized porn.

Compulsory condom use would start an underground of even unsafer porn.  I think sex workers have to recognise that they aren't completely safe, no matter what precautions they take.  It's a risky activity, like all sex with multiple partners.

As for a health and safety officer, that's an interesting idea! Doea anyone know if regular STD testing is mandatory in the industry anywhere? Certainly, sex workers may not be completely safe but the more meausured precautions taken, the better I feel. (Though I tend to agree that mandatory condom use probably wouldn't work)

It was a Doc on TV about 7 years ago. I know their used in the US to fool drug testers by putting someone elses urine in the semen bag. I'm pretty sure in the American porn industry you have to show a clear test every so many months. In the Australian prostitution industry you have to be tested every three months, show that you've been tested but not the results. I am actually all for mandatory condoms in porn films with allowances for couples, fake penises, pretend sex etc. There are a few ladies who insist on it (Jemma Jamison for one) but they can only really do this if they're in demand or it's unlikely they'll get much work.
Quite a few years back there was a porn actor who was fudging his tests and infected I think three actresses with HIV. Apparently people were suspicious of his health certificates but he was never stopped from working. It's easy to say that if you work in this industry you know the risks but that's bullshit because in this day and age we have all sort of measures in place to minimise workplace hazards. It's mandatory to wear a condom in the prostitution industry and because of this it's pretty much common practice so even though I'm sure there are instances when it doesn't happen, every prostitute can generally make that decision for her or him self.

The other positive effect would be the example it would set to have condoms make consistent appearances in porn.  The way condoms just don't seem to exist in the world of porn and even in much mainstream film/tv leads people to aim for the ideal of sex without them and to disregard their importance.  And reminding people that even porn stars use condoms would be a good reality check.  That said, I understand that porn is a fantasy and people want to see cocks in all their raw detail.
