Got a new subject for Lia to study!

On the subject of older men and boys in classical times -- modern interpretations of the legitimacy of -- etc. I was looking at the Wikipedia article on chess, when I discovered a picture of "a youth playing chess with two suitors":

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Yout … Awrang.jpg

Here's the fairly amazing part. This is an illustration from a book called "A Father Advises His Son About Love" in which a father, no less, gives his son recommendations about choosing a worthy older male lover.

Well, at least it suggests the kid had some say in the matter.

I await Lia's PhD thesis with interest.

Re: Got a new subject for Lia to study!

As I'm currently writing an essay on psychoanalysis of all sodding things (and get this - I'm doing a sodding Jungian and Kristevan reading of the bloody Wicker Man; I really must be a complete masochist), this just does my head in.
That's really quite spectacularly intriguing, particularly since it's depicted as so normative and sub-standard, as opposed to subversive or 'deviant'.

Dude.

Parents advising their children on love - and sex, more specifically - always has dubious connotations (mine were particularly surreal, as I got told in graphic minutiae all about such sublime things as rimming, donkey-punching and orgyistic splendors by my mother and her rather egalitarian friends at a very, very young age), and if you're looking at such a dialectic via the traditional Freudian seduction theory, it's quite warped in itself, but a father advising his son on homosexual relations of a decidedly inter-generational manner ("Hey there, son, which one of my mates appeals to you?")... Mind-boggling.

Poor kiddy-fiddling Snape has been quite outdone.

“You are certainly not a pornographer,” he said.
“No, but it sounded good. I like those two p’s.
The alliteration.”

Re: Got a new subject for Lia to study!

Do I even want to know what donkey-punching IS? It sounds hard on the donkey...

I suspect it was as much about politics as anything else. With women both inaccessible and utterly irrelevant in medieval Persia, there wasn't much point in discussing sex with THEM. On the other hand, choosing a wealthy and politically connected male lover probably helped to set a kid up for life.

Of course, the relationship probably only lasted between ages 14 and 20 or so, at which time the kid would get married and/or be tossed aside for someone younger, so he had to make the most of it.

I wonder if it has been translated?

That really isn't a very nice thing to do to lover, now is it.  (Love the avatar by the way SunGodServant).

hmm yes I think that just giving the girl an orgasm would be a much nicer way to make her vagina contract!

Sounds about as dangerous as Neck choking\asphyxiation.

A sexual modified TENs unit is far safer.

And what, pray tell, is a sexual modified TENs unit? (Perspiring with illicit curiosity.)

Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulator. It's a machine that transmits electrical signals through the skin and is believed to reduce pain by temporarily interfering with the neural pathways that transmit pain signals.

They used to be available be prescription only, and be very expensive. Like all electronics, they're probably a lot cheaper now. I get the impression their efficacy is not proven.

I've never heard of one being modified for sexual use. On one setting they are thought to induce production of endorphins, the morphine-like pain-blocking chemical that runners are said to get high on. Maybe that's what's meant.

I still think Max's idea is nicer.
