This is where the term wanker is used as a derogatory term for someone who can't find anyone to have sex with them because they're hopeless. Nearly all of us masterbate, someone with 6 children will have masturbated. I'd liken masturbation to physical and mental training where we have complete choice about where we want to go with it, it's wonderful. Where it relates to sex with someone else, it can get us into bad habits or help us develop. Masturbation is part of sex.

As to marketing, the need for money makes us care about what other people want :)
