Thats the famous Bonobo's http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eubDSQrFako I read a bit more about them a few months ago and across their population they have different groups who's cultures vary, most are peaceful, using sex to settle disputes but some are violent and murderous and they've been a few murders among captive Bonobo's.

We can exhibit a wide range of behaviours and so can our nearest relative, and like us observing the behaviour of one group doesn't mean the whole species is the same. Whats more, they can copy our behaviour and we can copy theirs.

Up to now, there is no evidence, that bonobos (in stark contrast to the chimpanzees), are practising violent encroachments by mortal hurt to other conspecifics, in a not from humans uninfluenced wilderness. Even extremely sexual and aggressive activities of bonobos are observed only at the impasse of a zoo. Generally I hope, we people are more similar to the peaceful bonobos than to the chimpanzees.

I think the things I read warned against generalizing about intelligent species as we'd never do about humans, because we exhibit cultural diversity and we can make behavioural choices. So as a generalization Bonobo's are much more peaceful than chimps but their not without violence altogether and some of this has been observed. (Don't ask me for references I'm a bit Sarah Palin on that :) I just read without bookmarking any :)

A lot of discussion of Bonobo's revolves around wether there is any reason we can't be like them, there isn't, because we're an ape that can change it's behaviour and the point I'm making is that Bonobo's are intelligent enough to make individual and cultural behaviour choices too, and over time have evolved a culture themselves thats generally largely peaceful. It's the diversity of groups and individuals and how much other animals have, like us, the potential for behavioural choice I find interesting.

Just out of interest this has come up on google science news http://www.telegraph.co.uk/earth/main.j … obo114.xml I read something to this effect a few months ago. All the articles I've read make absurd general conclusions, a bit like saying one French murderer means everyone who's French is a potential murderer. Which illustrates the real absurdity of judging the whole species together instead of appreciating they're a collection of cultures and individuals.
