Re: Chica has started a blog

Oh yes the first one Blissed posted and the one of your face when you are under the bath water, that is beautiful, I have this idea for some pictures of ladies under water, sort of looking like they're sinking or falling away into the deep, with hair and bubbles and sad eyes, I would love for you to be in them,  I'll send you an email. I just need to work out how to do it, I think I need a swimming pool and dye, any suggestions anyone? xxx
p.s Happiest birthdays and thank you for sharing your beautiful pictures!!

I guess you would like the picture of Kate Bush on the cover of Hounds of Love.  (for humor check out the centerfold picture of Joe Walsh from But Seriously Folks on vinyl if you can find it).  Vinyl lives!  Happy B'day Chica.

I talked about this with Alesha on ISM forum a while ago, I thought about swirling clouds of dye and bubbles lit by shooting up at the sun from inside the pool, but once the dye has spread, murky will be the only atmosphere left to use so using a rapid fire camera in a good underwater housing I think is a good idea. I think we concluded that putting good cameras in plastic bags etc is a little bit dodgy :)

As it's organic vegetable dye you could take some in your mouth, then go under the water and blow it out of your mouth like you would a smoke ring, then you'd have orange air bubbles coming out of your mouth or into someone elses face. 2 people could take a mouthful of dye, submerge and then kiss, releasing dyed bubbles, that might look pretty good.

If you did some of this in a fresh water stream the organic dye would wash down stream giving you lots of try's at it and no murkiness.

I just have to say tho,
I love this black pool pic by
Howard Schatz.

Re: Chica has started a blog

Hey Chica,

Great blog, beautiful pictures. I know how hard it is to inspire the writer in you to come out of hiding. I recently took a "Fundamentals of Writing" class to prepare for a return to college. Wow, was I rusty. I could barely organize my thoughts. I'm not a big fan of formal writing (expository essays and such), but it helped with the process of expressing myself on paper. It gave me some structure. The professor showed us some techniques to break through that initial barrier.

He called it, "Stream of Consciousness" or, "Freewriting." It's sort of spilling words out on to a piece of paper, and then organizing them afterwards. I think of it as mental diarrhea with a pen. It could also be described as literary emetophilia. It can be very poetic. Anything for a naked revolution.

Your photography is very beautiful and intriguing. I wonder if you've ever heard of Francesca Woodman. She was a photographer that lived a tragically short life, but produced some incredibly ethereal and serene images of women primarily.

This is one of her self-portraits.

Re: Chica has started a blog

yep good one sunbeam.

Kirejos, Francesca Woodman sounds like an interesting woman, tragically short life... did she commit suicide? I like that picture a lot and the etheral beauty you talk about is exactly what I like so much about it. Am working on the stream of consciousness writing, thanks for the tip.

Bobby I love the underwater picture idea and Blissed vegetable dye sounds like the way to go. Bobby we need to get our hands on an underwater picture-taking device soon and I think we should be each others muses, your hair will look amazing underwater!

Thank you for all the sweet birthday wishes everyone. It was a strange day, birthdays are mostly strange for me.

Anyway, keep checking my blog, it's growing. lets hope this initial enthusiasm lasts.

A disposable underwater camera should do the trick in the first instance (and a scanner, unless they do digital ones now).  Not sure about the ethics of disposable cameras though...

About to head over to your blog...

kirejos this is the 1st time I've been able to see the picture of Francesca Woodman, I just got a little blue question mark where the pic should be up till now. Googled her and she's really interesting, like an ISM from the 1970's with mirrors and humour, someone has to be pretty unhappy to kill themselves, what a shame someone couldn't have persuaded her not to.

Re: Chica has started a blog

Yeah. Artists that don't fall into a convenient niche often struggle with their emotions, the perception of failure, and self-doubt. Broken relationships don't help either. She tried to break into the fashion world, but met with very limited success. Her work was percieved as "too gritty" for the late seventies.
Ironically, her work inspired so many fashion photographers who came later.

She got some help along the way, but managed to slip between the cracks. Mental health care is bad enough in the United States now with the stigmas people attach to it. Can you imagine what it was like 30 years ago? This is a quote from an aquaintance- "things had been bad, there had been therapy, things had gotten better, guard had been let down."

I think however, that her work is the most interesting thing about her. That's probably what she would've wanted to be remembered for. Suicide is tragic and more common than people realize, but I think it is more important to remember how someone lived rather than how they died.

There are quite a few of her images online, you should check them out. I remember how popular her work was with students in the photography department when I was in school. She is considered to be one of the very first young women photographers to have been recognized in the "post-contemporary" era. The 1970's art photography world was still very much dominated by men. It still is to a slightly lesser extent.

Re: Chica has started a blog

Hey Chica,

I started experimenting with underwater photography a couple months ago in the ocean. I used an underwater housing case, which works pretty well. The only downside is that I can only shoot on really calm days. But that won't be a problem if you're doing it in a pool.

   Sounds like a cool idea!
