Definitely, actually that song has a very interesting history. Noone really knows who wrote it. It was a folk standard for decades before The Animals turned it into the first real folk-rock hit. Historians don't even really agree on what it means, there are a number of interpretations. Some people theorize that it references a building/house/hotel in New Orleans from as early as 1820. Other musicians and artists to have played it include Woody Guthrie, Nina Simone, Lead Belly, Dave Van Ronk, Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, and the Seventies punk band Frijid Pink.

There's a funny story about how in the early Sixties New York folk scene, Dave Van Ronk played a popular version of it around the Villiage that a relatively unknown Bob Dylan heard and liked. When Bob Dylan got an offer to record from Columbia Records (a shock and something of a coup to the other "folkies"), he played Van Ronks version of House of the Rising Sun for one of the producers that pretty much sealed the deal. He recorded it, and it triggered Bob Dylans commercial success. Afterwards, when The Animals recorded it, and made it wildly popular, people accused Dylan of stealing it from them. He never played it again. Van Ronk eventually saw the irony and humor in that.

It's a great tune.

Or tunes. The different versions, although recognisably the same song, have often substantially different melody lines. The Animals version is however my karaoke favourite - the only song I can safely sing without getting booed off stage.

Indeed, the song has such a rich history that one guy -- Ted Anthony -- wrote a whole book about it. I haven't had a chance to read the book, but here's a link to a great radio interview about it.

This is interesting, I wonder how the concept's gonna manifest in any production model.

Re: You Tube

I was just turned down for a job and I'm feeling kinda' bummed out about it.

It's happened before, and I always flash back to first grade when I was seven years old. We sat around the television set on that day in school, to watch the first shuttle flight on live TV. "Shuttle Columbia". I remember it so vividly, my two best friends and I made a pact to become astronauts on that day.

I cried my eyes out when Columbia broke-up on re-entry in 2003.

Re: You Tube

Sorry you got turned down for your job as an astronaut, would've been exiting :)  I don't expect Nasa to deliver now and put my faith in Burt Rutan and people like him to go into space with a purpose rather than go where no-one has gone before and never go back. Heres Bill Stone who wants to go to the moon and set up a facility making fuel. http://www.ted.com/index.php/talks/bill … space.html  Living on other planets means largely living underground and when your imagination takes you there and you think what you could do with large caverns with beautiful lighting and plants and animals and dancing low gravity waterfalls then bring yourself back and walk outside to realize your in a most amazing place already :) Going to the moon with a purpose is the best way to look after the earth. At the moment there are 2 autonomous artificial intelligence agents on mars (the rovers) 20 years before any person will set foot there. So I think the moon and space will be filled with autonomous artificial intelligence agents sometimes as intelligent as us or more so, and a few people on holiday there or living there comfortably.

This quite a good 4 min video too http://www.ted.com/index.php/talks/pete … ero_g.html

Re: You Tube

An interesting young man, I just read this article in today's NY Times.

Matt Harding likes to dance.

I guess it's one of the most popular YouTube clips out there. It's getting like a gazillion hits.

I don't know if anyone here has already seen it. I think it's great.

Here's the clip- Where the hell is Matt (2008)

Re: You Tube

I like the weightless dancing and I see he went to Sydney and not Melbourne tsch! tsch!  :) Actually, I read he had a sponsor to make that movie and I think this was the original video he made while backpacking that started it off, http://youtube.com/watch?v=7WmMcqp670s&feature=user as silly ideas go, I think it's a pretty good one :)

Just watched an interview with him, looks like dancing badly is his new career. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RFtTSisZ … re=related
