Whew, where do I go to pick up my Doctoral degree after reading all that? I guess that it worked as a way to bring me out as one of the forum lurkers. Quite honestly, I found myself not registering and posting because I engross myself in the readings and by the time I want to post I see the sun rising. Since I represent all the forum lurkers (self appointed, of course), I don't feel that I am in anyway a voyeur in the classical sense. I feel that I am a perpetual student and want to learn everything. I would be quite content to sit in a corner of the room and listen or watch something interesting. But, I am equally content with joining in and sharing the knowledge I've earned (yes, earned not learned. Blood, sweat, tears, time, desire, patience and all that) I promise I'll jump in and reply a bit more.
But for now...*tip-toes back to the dark corner* *lurk, lurk, lurk*

Welcome, SunGodServant (cool name!).
I lurked for a few days too before I decided to join the melee, but it's really worthwhile. Since you have glided through the shadows for a while and read most of what's here, you know what a fun place this can be, and judging from your post, it will be even more fun when you start contributing regularly .

Speaking of Neuromancer the last I heard Chris Cunningham (responsible for awesome Aphex Twin/ Bjork/ Squarepusher among others film clips) and Aphex Twin himself were developing a screen play of the book for film. (Which I expect Cunningham was to direct) This was pre Matrix so I wonder if its still happening, anyone know???

Apparently he's making music videos again at the moment, so the Neuromancer movie is probably not going to happen anytime soon.

I just noticed that the forum is rapidly approaching 5,000 posts, which is very nice. It has picked up speed lately, and I hope that this trend will continue. Also, the quality of the posts and discussions keep increasing, something I would hardly have thought possible, given that the level of intelligence, humour and candour was so high to begin with.

I hope you don't mean your silence. There are indeed people from all over the world here, but as far as I know, you are the only member from France who posts in the forum, and that by itself makes you important. The fact that you are also a very nice guy with a poetic mind doesn't hurt either.
However, I do think that sex sizzles, seen or unseen, behind every post here, however innocent it may seem ...
I looked in a dictionary and came to the conclusion that your username means something like "pretty filth" or "lovely smut" or something like that. Is that approximately correct? If so: cool.

Burlesque: a musical, comical stage show with lots of sexual innuendo and sometimes striptease. As an adjective it can mean, among other things, "drolly imaginative". I'm rather pleased with this name, I think it captures the spirit of this site and sometimes myself, when I'm in good shape.
No one who has seen Bisou is ever likely to forget her! I'm under the impression that she is the favourite of several members.
I like the image of the guys hanging out with flowers backstage at the opera. It's very apt, only the level of conversation here is likely higher than it is there.

This is my first post, but as an older guy, I really liked the video 'inspiration'.

This thread has been a great read!
I should however warn that my type is strictly forbidden to pass within ten meters of lit theory folks/cultural studies peeps/other individuals who may have read something by Derrida, in the uni corridors or there may be an implosive reaction that makes us both go pop! and disappear. (And we wouldn't want that.) I will keep reading at a safe distance.
Oh, my type? Um... dare I? I live in the wing where every word must have a definite extension, and every assertion be deductively supported, or in case of some probabilistic formalization of induction (Carnap says any will do), be delivered with suitable disclaimers and apologies, and not in a very serious manner. Löwenheim-Skolem's Theorem, anyone? (Oh yeah, I can feel my sexiness rating go through the floor...)

Welcome to the site 698879p. (Those username/password fields can really get confusing sometimes, can't they? ). But you have to level with us. exactly how old is older? .

I believe Burlesque has hit the nail on the head. I find these forums extremely interesting and well written. I very rarely comment right away to any topicm because I need to get my ideas and opinions in order before making a contribution. Also I am the worst, without arguement, speller known in this sector of the universe.
I will also agree with Liandra, I have never felt a non-majority opinion would be edited or removed from the forum.
I apologize to Elfman for a contribution that is in agrement with several other commenters and having never watched or had a desire to watch Twin Peeks.

Well, Jerry, I should take a cue from you and think before I write sometimes . As for spelling, you are wrong, and anyway it doesn't matter that much in a forum: it's literally the thought that counts. I always read through every post I write before submitting it, and that way I manage to stomp out most of my spelling errors. It's my substitute for actually thinking.

good morning, Burlesque! (or whatever time it is in Sweden.)
Wow. check it out! You and I posted at EXACTLY the same second just now -- you hit send on the post above as I hit in another thread.

Well, someone's hot and bothered. No one can claim that IFM doesn't deliver the goods.
It's actually about 15.00 here as of this writing, and I should be doing something rather important. I'm not.

ah. fortunately i had a good run and a feeling much better, thank you.
nothing worse than that feeling of yearning for what one can't have.
you seem a bit out of sorts, today, my swedish friend.
are you ambulatory? can you take a walk? perhaps that would help?
I'd love to see a thread here in which we describe our cities (those of us who live in cities), our neighborhoods, etc. I'm sure everyone here has got interesting things to say their partic. neck of the woods. I'd love to be a fly on your wall. . . .

Out of sorts? No more so than usual. It's just that I represent that old cliché species "creature of the night" and I don't seem to get going until the sun is down. And no, I'm not in a wheelchair yet .
I live in a small town. I work in a larger town. None of them do anything for me, and I wish I still lived in the country. I truly cannot think of anything more sprightly to say about where I live, and so someone else better start that new thread .

Speaking for myself here, I'm quite honestly a tiny bit scared of commenting too much on the submissions because I'm afraid I'll say something not nice, in which case the rules (unwritten or otherwise) tell me I shouldn't say anything at all. That is not to say I would ever say that someone is unattractive, that they turn me off, or that they have a perverted sexuality (other than in a fiendishly attractive way), but I'm worried I'd get into particularities that some contributors might be offended by, even if they aren't the specific target of my criticism. So I usually limit myself to rather generic praise of those contributions I for one reason or other find particularly sexy*, and mostly in other people's threads.
I think one of the valuable assets of this site Nowaysis is the ability to have a disagreement, and the restrictions on the forum are an opportunity to develop non-agressive and diplomatic ways of having differences of opinions - the fact that you can be reprimanded as it were, is a guide for encouraging discussion. Again, I think this is a factor of the world at large being present - we are taught that disagreement is a negative thing, and we believe that chastisement or constructive criticism is a command for us to stop trying and shut up.
I think this: let's see it as a learning environment (it is after all, a fairly new forum for discussion generally and historically - the taboo around sex has not given us the opportunity to learn how to talk about it nor express ourselves around it) and also to recognise this important fact; it is fundamentally human to learn by error. This a normal process and it may be more helpful to view it as a tool rather than a terror! As Richard says.. this is a benevolent dictatorship.. ha ha
You've gotta accept that if you want to be always learning, that you'll feel like you know almost nothing, or aren't good at anything, for most of the time. There isn't much comfort or smugness in it.

I'd say it's because anyone can read but only members can post.
I would guess that this is one of the big reasons, but also the fact that a person may check a thread in which they commented to see if anyone responded directly to something they said, accidentally click on the wrong thread, look through a series of threads for a specific comment they are looking for, etc. The view counter doesn't differentiate between new viewers and repeat readers, after all.

Found this thread from 2008. My visits to this site are short and fleeting, hence my posts are short and sweet. Reason, work full time and then some. Also I have privacy issues. Must admit prefer to view and read rather than write. I use the forum almost in a texting fashion, being used to mobile phone technology. I do enjoy the long and highly intelligent posts, especially from Gala, Viva and others, and also the short posts from our master of ceremonies Richard and others.
Don't try to change others, change yourself :-))

Forgot about this one ... I still think sex forums attract a shy reticent personality, they are more prone to reading, and adverse to putting their own likes/dislikes or opinions out there for the world to see and pick apart ... And in some cases, that may be a good thing ... altho I think if you like or admire a contributor you should say something, tactfully and without causing undue embarrassment, and if you don't, Silence is Golden ...
Read a good number of the posts and am amazed at the names of the posters that I haven't seen in a long time ... wonder where they went and why they never came back ??
Edited because my typing is getting worse, hope I found them all

I've always felt that this forum was rather a special place, because of what Kitkat said so long ago, that we have a chance for communication and debate within an intimate circle of people from all walks of life and opinion but who are learning to agree on a basic level of respect inherent in sexuality. I am a share-y kinda gal - I enjoy exposing myself, as it were - but in a more public arena I certainly would not be able to share my experiences and feelings with the kind of honestly I have often achieved in this forum, simply because I'm uninterested in being judged and categorized and labeled an attention-whore. On other forums this happens.
I know that people who spend their time trolling and spewing accusations are jealous of the attention one may receive or simply cranky, and I should ignore them. but I feel really unhappy if I share something deep or difficult with a disparaging or cynical audience, it's like tossing a bit of myself into unfriendly territory and while it's not so significant, it can't be taken back.
so yeah these forums are a great place to discuss everything under the sex-sun without fear of judgement or censure. You may be asked to rephrase yourself or be more polite - open communication is the way that these forums can be maintained as a safe place for everybody. it has ebbs and flows like any social hub, as people move on to other things and other people come to join IFM, and also as people take what they need from the forum. Sometimes we have more people writing than others, but even in quiet times there are more readers and lurkers than y'all would think... so it's always worthwhile to share, information, observations, stories, etc, and of course it is way awesome to compliment the ladies, it feels good to see someone admires your work, especially for new contributors.

I believe some people would rather watch/read than participate, or they might fully disagree with the tone/opinions/ideologies that they don't want to mess up their standing as a member as being labeled negatively because their views/opinions are against everything that they believe are represented here.
It might be as simple as being at a big group outing/social event and having everyone who would like to comment about the subject at hand get up and speak at the podium in front of all these people that they don't even know.
