Re: Currently listening to thread

My Aim is true, which I have now bought for the (let's see, Brit vinyl, American vinyl, original CD, Ryko reissue, Rhino reissue, this new deluxe edition) sixth fucking time.  Where does this end?  Is anything ever complete any more?

And I must know the answer, 'cause I keep buying the motherfuckers.  Target audience, anyone?

Re: Currently listening to thread

I've been on a serious Guided by Voices kick since picking up James Greer's book on the band last week; the best-of "Human Amusements at Hourly Rates" has been on near-constant rotation for the past few days, especially latter-day gems like "Glad Girls", "Chasing Heather Crazy" and "Things I Will Keep".

Also, I felt like Christmas had come early yesterday when I discovered that "rough mixes" (which mostly sound more like demos) for the new Brian Jonestown Massacre album had been posted for public consumption on their website.

Other recent listening:  South San Gabriel, The Jayhawks, Spoon, Low, Bonnie "Prince" Billy, X (U.S.), Wilco, Hedwig & The Angry Inch OST, Apples in Stereo

- Zeke

(greetings, by the way -- figured that this was a nice & easy thread for my first post!)

Welcome, Zeke- you'll find much more than naked women.  Trawl through the back threads- there's a lot of good writing.  Liked your stuff- we'd get along famously.

NB.  like GBV and Kate, also- a lot of good taste in this thread.  And nobody's claimed Celine Dion yet!

Many thanks -- I was up until about 4 o'clock in the morning wallowing in the back threads; probably spent more time reading than viewing, if only just.  Experiencing it all through immersion has been one hell of a treat for the synapses, which are currently firing on all cylinders.

Above & beyond the intelligence & passion on display in so much of the writing here - not to mention a formidable degree of civility and respect for an online forus - what strikes me most is the commitment of so many participants to the process of dialogue.  Even when people don't agree, they seem earnest in their attempts to listen & engage to the best of their abilities.

Whereabouts are you in the midwest?  Don't let the location fool you; I'm a St. Louis boy born and bred.

Re: Currently listening to thread

I went to see "Repo Man" on the big screen tonight here. Fuckin' kick-ass soundtrack. Now I have the Circle Jerks' (who make a cameo appearance in the film) "When the Shit Hits the Fan" stuck in my head. I don't mind at all, I still have that soundtrack on vinyl from when I was twelve, time to blow the dust off of it. Fuck yeah.

"plate-o-shrimp" = cosmic unconsciousness

Re: Currently listening to thread

You might be interested in The Decline and Fall of Western Civilization (the first one, not the heavy metal second one) by Penelope Spheeris.  I think there is a S/T album for it.

I just bought The Modern Lovers on my lunch break. No more dependency on my housemates copy.

The girls would turn the colour of the avacado.

It is criminal that this film does not currently exist in any legitimate format.  Legal issues have kept it tied up for years, from what I can understand -- producers fighting, etc.

Watching this film - especially the X segment - is probably one of the single most important formative experiences in my life.  I want to be John Doe when I grow up.

Is this the new reissue?  I'm so tempted, even though I know that they'll turn around in another two years and do it all over again.  I think this is the third, maybe fourth time they've repackaged this album in the past decade.

PS.  I don't think you have to grow up to be John Doe- he's still doing what he wants.

I don't know why rap lyrics have got to be so stroppy, whats their problem!! :) I love the lyrical twists tho, if anyone knows of a rapper with cool lyrics let me know :)

Thanks phexy :)  theres some good moments in there :)

Orbital are good live too but I think sometimes they just put a CD on and dance about with  those light things on their heads :) 2001 is such a great film visually.

kirejos, over the rainbow is Elf's favourite, sung by Eva Cassidy, it is a lovely tune.

Anyway, heard this in the car on holiday, now I'm hooked. You see a bit of semi rural England in the video too from the guys cycle cam.

Snow Angels, the new Christmas album by Over the Rhine (of whom I had never heard 'til I happened on this song playing in my local music store this evening):

snowanovesm.jpg <--Weird! This image link was working the night I originally posted this, but now when I look back, it doesn't seem to be. Teh intertoobz work in mysterious ways, eh?

Before that, I was listening to Diana Krall's Christmas Songs. Not only can she flat-out sing, but...

krallte8.jpg

...frickin' gorgeous!

I just love Christmastime!
