Hello, I Must Be Going...

...I cannot stay; I came to say I must be going. I'm glad I came but just the same I must be going...

Well, I've been a member here since IFM's inception, and a BA member since (IIRC) the 200-series contributions, but now I find that, for a variety of personal reasons, I have to rearrange how I allocate my resources, both budget and personal time... so it's time for me to bid this happy crew adieu. My membership will expire at the end of the week.

Thanks to Richard (and Lauren over at BA), and to all the crew, especially Bobby, Cate, and Gala. And, of course, above all to all the lovely contributors.

Thanks also to moderator extraordinaire Elfman, and the ever-prolific Blissed, and to all the other forum denizen -- past, present, and lurking -- who have made my time here so pleasant (not to mention time-consuming!). And especially, good luck to Chuck and Deb (and Mollie) in their brave experiment.

I'll be around 'til my clock runs out, and maybe I'll drop back in at some point in the future... but for now, well, it's so long...

-Bill

Re: Hello, I Must Be Going...

Hey thanks Bill :) I was in an Amdram version of the sound of music, I played Fredrick. Apart from all the singing my only line was "What you?" which I think I delivered excellently at every performance :) Anyway, hope you pop back in now and again, it's been nice having you here on the forum :)

I'm flattered that you think my leaving is sad news, but don't worry that I'm leaving for personally sad reasons. Basically it's two things: My daughter is in her senior year of high school, and she's applying to colleges like Yale, Georgetown, Wesleyan, and Tufts... which means my family is going on an austerity budget, and I can no longer (if I ever could) justify spending money on things that are so completely for me alone. In addition, I've gotten involved in local politics (I'm helping manage the Democratic campaign for town offices now, and when that's done it'll be time to gear up for the 2008 national elections), and really shouldn't be spending hours each night reading about wanking! wink

If any of you have a mind to keep in touch, I have a little blog of my own that's been dormant for some time, but which I intend to start back up. All I ask is if you leave a comment there, don't mention where you know me from. My other readers (if any) don't know about my secret life. wink

Funny you should mention that: I just watched Toughlove again last night, and was awestruck all over at the way you totally abandoned yourself to physical sensation. I don't believe I've ever seen anything like it. Thank you (and Gala) for this riveting work of art.

Re: Hello, I Must Be Going...

nihpuad, say it aint so........really?

Thanks for being around, I've always been intrigued by your compelling dialogue. You know how when you click to the forum from the front page, and the forum index shows up with the names of the most recent posters next to the corresponding category? You are one of the very few that I click on right away. I've always enjoyed your posts, your contributions to the forum will be sorely missed. I hope you can make it back some day.

I'd also like to say how much I appreciate your contribution to the political process, the Democrats need all of the help they can get this time around, there's too much at stake. You go get 'em!

Congratulations on your daughter's upcoming adventure. I may be able to contribute a thing or two with regard to her choices. I went to the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston ("Museum School", affiliated with Tufts). Tufts students take their studio art classes there, and Museum School students do their academic work at Tufts. I've bummed around the Tufts campus a little bit, it's really beautiful. The great advantage with going to school in or around Boston, is that many of the schools allow cross-registration. When I was at the Museum School, we could take classes at MIT's List Visual Art Center, and I'm pretty sure I remember hearing from Tufts students that they could cross-register at Harvard (which is like 2 blocks away from Tufts). Boston University, Boston College, Northeastern, Berklee College of Music, New England Conservatory of Music, and I think Brandeis University in Waltham, Mass. all do too. It's definitely worth looking into, and would be a lot of fun for her.

Hooray for Capt. Spaulding! Auf wiedersehen. Hope to see you around again, take care smile

Well, it really is a small world, isn't it: My mother attended MFA, studying jewelry design and silversmithing, for a couple years, before her family circumstances forced her to drop out. (This would've been in the late 1940s, I think.) Tufts has a beautiful new fine arts center now, so I think they teach a fair number of studio classes on campus... but they still have the affiliation with the Museum, including a 5-year program that leads to simultaneous BA and BFA degrees. The nice thing is that even non-Art majors (my daughter is likely to major in either English or History) can take classes at the Museum.

It's a funny thing: We had driven through the Tufts campus last Fall on a dreary day, and had gotten a lackluster impression... but just recently, she started saying she thought we should give it another chance. This time we took an actual tour, and she fell in love with the place. Now it's near the top of her list, right behind (or maybe just ahead of, depending on the day) Yale. She really likes the idea of going to school in Boston; BU is one of her "safeties" ("safe" from an admissions POV, though we're not at all sure about cost!).

Thanks, BTW, for the very kind words (you, too, Deb). I worry if I don't actually leave soon, folks will think I'm just fishing for compliments! wink

At the risk of yet another musical theatre allusion, I'm minded of a scene from Pirates of Penzance (I couldn't find the right clip on YouTube or I'd've posted it): The constables have declared their intent to go off and arrest the pirates, but they're obviously terrified, so instead of actually leaving on their mission, they just keep singing about how they're about to leave. After the nth chorus, one of the onlookers yells "But, dammit, they don't go!" I promise, I really will be gone in a couple days! wink

Welcome back, DG! (He says, on his way out the door <sigh>...)

I'm not sure anything I post there will match my contributions here, since I won't be responding to the same provocative (so to speak wink ) ideas. But having given out the address to you lot will hopefully at least prompt me to post something!

In fact, I'll try to get something up today.
