my username is my nickname on ism and ifm (forthcoming). it was correctly identified in my ism debut as the name of salvador dali's lover and muse, gala. i think she's hot and i think dali's fascinating, and their relationship and work just oozes sex (though not always in the most appealing ways). so i figured it was appropriate.

It was also picked since no one has ever heard of him and there is never a problem anywhere with selecting a username. It's also relatively short and I hate typing more than necessary.
Ashmedi - is that indian? persian? where is this lusty little demon from exactly?
Hello Liandra. In actuality, Ontario, Canada, or as it is otherwise known, 3rd rock from the sun, south of the north 49th parallel in a country spanning the entire continent.
This was just copied from my webpage as to my alter ego.
And my webpage is at xxx if anybody is bored enough to read it
My current third nickname, Ashmedi, is used by one extremely good female friend I met about 2 1/2 years ago. It is my self proclaimed nickname used for MSN messenger and in the MSN chat rooms. Ashmedi is synonomous with Asmodeus, and used to be the name of one of my pet budgies who had a death wish. Ashmedi and/or Asmodeus was the demon of rage and lust and I believe the names were based on Persian mythology. The current search engine info turned up no info for Ashmedi, and indicates that Asmodeus was the jewish 'King of Demons'. I like the Persian reference better, although the names do not fit my character, personality, or temperament. Well, not as far as rage goes, however the lust part might be right on.
If you search with 'DogPile', you get a ton of info, including the following two.
From the encyclopedia Brittanica
Asmodeus - Hebrew ASHMEDAI, in Jewish legend, the king of demons. According to the apocryphal book of Tobit, Asmodeus, smitten with love for Sarah, the daughter of Raguel, killed her seven successive husbands on their wedding nights. Following instructions given to him by the angel Raphael, Tobias overcame Asmodeus and married Sarah.
From the encyclopedia Mythica
Asmodeus - An evil spirit. He appears in the Apocryphal book of Tobit. Although he is described in later literature as the king of demons, in Jewish folklore he is mischievous and lively, a figure of fun and often a friend to people. He is said to disturb marital happiness, and it was Asmodeus who strangled the seven husbands of Sara during her wedding-night.
Asmodeus originated from the ancient Persian demon Aesma Daeva. Latinized form of the Hebrew Ashmedai.

Ashmedi is an ancient god of rage and lust.
I don't feel rage, but the lust part fits like a glove.

Well, initially my name on here was just Khanada, but I had to alter it because I was having trouble logging in. So now I am Khanada Faye.
I got Khanada from an old Duran Duran b-side which I quite love. And "Faye," while also meaning 'faerie' (something I also love), is the second name of Daisy Buchanan in The Great Gatsby , a book I adore. The two names have a nice iambic pattern together, and since I have been told by writing professors that I often unconsciously write in iambic pentameter, I suppose this suits me. Plus, I just think it sounds pretty.
My icon is a detail from an Alphonse Mucha painting called "La Luna". I quite love him, too.

Khanada I thought you were from Canada (but you are a New Yorker) and for some reason I associated the spelling deviation with the Joni Mitchell song- the way she sings Canada sounds like it should be spelt that way. So in my head I had you as a Joni Mitchell fan from Canada who spelt faerie the same way as Tori Amos!!!

Well, I do quite love Tori Amos, as evidenced by my signature quote! She was also my old icon.
And the way Simon LeBon pronounces it in the song is with the accent on the long second "a" so it reads more like Kha-NAY-da (with the other "a's" sounding like the u in "fun"). Khanada is also, I believe, a region in India, but I don't know how they pronounce it there.
And that first boy of mine (which I mentioned in another thread... somewhere) was Canadian, and my grandfather lived in Canada for a while, and I believe I have some relatives who immigrated to Canada (from Malta, not from the States), so... I suppose there are my only, and rather boring, ties to our great and mellow neighbor to the north
And yes, I am a New Yorker--you're a good sleuth, I can't remember mentioning it here. Not born, but raised, in the heart of Manhattan by a working class family, so my relationship to the city is aching and complex. But no matter where I am (and right now it's Arizona, but not for long!), New York City will always be home.
I also have quite a few relatives living in Australia, though I have never been.

Believe it or not, the Stolen Girlfriend is an actual person. The name was coined by a friend and I one day when we were conjuring up hardcore scene "urban legend" stories. Generally, the story is so much better than what really happened.
For example, one story that I found really great was the one where the drummer got fed up and quit the band mid song - guy just fucking walked off stage - mid song. And I thought to myself, "wow, now that is the best way to quit a band I've ever heard of". Turns out, it didn't really go down like that. Which was very disappointing.
Please keep in mind, that while this story is true, it probably isn't entirely accurate. I do, however, know someone that was there and he's never corrected me. And even if it was incorrect, the real truth probably won't be as good. Just like that time you met your hero and he / she turned out to be a real asshole.
Anyway, there was this one band from New York that was coming to California on tour. Their record label was based in Southern California, so when the band came through they obviously spent time with the label owner and such. At the time, the label owner was involved with a girl. I had met her a few times through mutual friends, but never really knew that much about her.
Once the band came to town, legend has it that she was instantly drawn to the singer of said band. From what I understand, she traveled with them up and down the state, attending the shows claiming to be "shooting photos of the band" so that the label owner wouldn't be suspicious of her intentions. From the outside, I don't think I would have suspected anything either.
Then, upon return from the statewide trip, she basically said that she was packing up all her shit and moving to NY to be with and live with the singer of the band. And just that quick and easy, she had become the Stolen Girlfriend.
Throughout my tenure in the hardcore scene, there have been numerous bands that have come through town, played shows, and ruined relationships - both with friends and with girlfriends of those friends. But none of those others really had the audacity or staying power of the original.
So anytime I hear of a relationship being destroyed by someone who was thought of as a friend of either of the participants, I always think back to my namesake and chalk another one up for the thousands of Stolen Girlfriends out there. You're all in good company.

Quite a few years ago I went to see a relatively obscure band called The Johnnies. Midway through the gig, two of the members (half the band) quit and stormed out. The rest of the band tried to struggle on through the jeers from the audience (there were about a dozen of us) until their manager stepped in and announced that anyone who wanted could get their name on the door for Gun Club later than night. So we went. The Johnnies stitched up their differences long enough to become Australian indie macro-legends. As for the Gun Club, I would have preferred to see half the Johnnies. Either half.

That's perfect. Glad to see that the legend actually happened somewhere.
But, if you don't mind me asking, which two members up and left? It's not quite the same if you're in a four piece where the singer doesn't play anything and he and the guitar player stay and the drummer and bass player leave, right?

I am The West Wind. I live in a town about seven and a half hours South West of Sydney and four to six hours North of Melbourne (depending on how you travel.)
I travel quite a bit, always going somewhere, even if it is just up the road to the shops or visiting friends and to training in the city. I go where I please, and money willing, I do what I want.
Some best describe me as eccentric, but this just is who I am.

My name just jumped into my, um, head when I registered. It comes from a series of drawings by an artist called Paul Rumsey whose work I like a lot, if 'like' is the right word. His work is disturbing, in a good way I think.

Interesting, very strange work by Mr. Rumsey. Do you know where on the Internet one might get to see more of it? And, um, am I to assume you look like that?

Unfortunately, no. I'm far less voluptuous and I don't wear bracelets. I should emphasize that Mr. Rumsey says he sees his drawings as comic as much as grotesque (indeed the traditions do often go together.

Thank you, Bodyhead!
Very special work, and I do find much of it funny as well. The "Gender" one is truly original and generates an atmosphere which is hard to define: suggestive, musing, disturbing, low-key ironic are words that come to mind. Much of his work looks to me like 17th and 18th Century illustrations with a very modern sensibility.

Hey very cool Bodyhead. I'm going to take a stab and say I think you'd apprietiate (if you don't already) Jake and Dinos Chapman's reworking of Goyas war prints. I'll post some when I get home tonight, I'm a big fan!!!
