I am listening to Jose Gonzales' live sessions - it's only 5 songs, but it's a very satisfying 5 songs.  I really really want him to record more music.

Totally uncool this one but I like it and talk about a sexy video!! :) the rubber ballet outfit !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :) The first 20 secs looks a bit silly, but don't worry, the rapper at the beginning doesn't hang around for long.

Some recent selections: Beethoven's 9th (2nd & 4th movements), Strauss-The Blue Danube, The Beatles-Hello Goodbye, Strawberry Fields Forever (!!) MC Hammer-Hammer Time. Basically when I hear something I like & it starts running through my head.

Re: Currently listening to thread

Thats lovely, her voice has a deeper register and great emotional jazzy kind of quality now. In this clip, the strings are dramatic but she has to lose them :) and she should get together with an acoustic bass, rim or brushed snare and her acoustic guitar and that would sound fantastic. I'm now in charge of her production and career direction BTW, I think I'll email her and tell her the good news :)

Mert du Japon by Air

You can hear some of it on the myspace link below. You have to scroll down to get the player and the 1st track that starts playing is a remix, don't bother with that, just click on the track below which is simply "Mert du Japon"

Re: Currently listening to thread

Yeah, they refer to a few of the songs from that album as his "drone" songs. Some of the artists back then were just in a universe of thier own. Must have been a great time to be alive smile Hurdy Gurdy Man was actually written as a gift for a friend in a Danish band called Hurdy Gurdy. They wanted to record it with a much harder sound, but Donovan refused and ended up recording it himself.

Check out this clip, John Lennon, Keith Richards, Eric Clapton and Mitch Mitchel (drummer for The Jimi Hendrix Experience), with Mick Jagger in a cameo. See if you can spot Yoko.

Re: Currently listening to thread

Steve Hillage (Khan, Gong, System 7) has recently undergone the remaster/bonus treatment of his Virgin catalogue.  His first post-Gong release, L, (produced by Todd Rundgren, backed by Utopia and Don Cherry (Ornette Coleman; father of Nena and Eagle Eye)(and just keeptrack of all these parentheses!)) leads off with a lovely version of Hurdy Gurdy Man.  The mention made me dig it out on vinyl.  It's good, and the album concludes with its' spiritual twin, George Harrison's It's All Too Much.  If ever there were psychedelic rangers, I think Steve and partner in song Miquette Giraudy (that's Babaloni Yoni, a nice connection with IFM) and Chief Conspirator Daevid Alien (Allen, of Gong)  would be the ones.  I'm now wanting the reissues.

Re: Currently listening to thread

Cool, anything to get someone to dig something out on vinyl. wink On the Wiki page for that album it says that on their trip to India, George composed a verse for Hurdy Gurdy Man, but that it never made it on to the original studio recording. Donovan later included it on subsequent recordings, and would play it live.

Here's something from other psychedelic rangers. Die Roboter

Re: Currently listening to thread

Interesting, very interesting.

We've got old and new dead people, and one of the greatest stylists of the late '60s.  I've just finished a walk with Scott (up to "Noel Scott Walker 4").  God, he's great.

I think John walker is obviously copying Jarvis cocker, the hand in front of the face when he sings "a cloak you wear"  looks pretty cool tho.

I'm gonna mime this song myself and put the video on youtube :)
