When W was reelected in '04, there was a great deal of graveyard humor among us progressives about moving to Canada, or perhaps to Oz or NZ. Some of the previous threads here, though, have made me realize I can't just move somewhere because I want to. Not that I could move anyway, with a daughter getting ready to start college, but I wonder what it would take...

How 'bout we replace the word "dorky" with "wreckless", or "ignorant", or "arrogant".

I've heard that Canada is already granting political asylum to enlisted Americans who believe that the war is illegal, and refuse deployment to Iraq.

The most accurate description for the current administration is the word "incompetent."

Everything GWB has touched, from the gas company his daddy bought him to the baseball team he was involved with to the whole state of Texas and now the USA itself-went straight to hell.

With the exception of Eisenhower, it is ironic how every other elected post-war republican flag hugging president (and their aparachiks) was/has been involved in persistent efforts to violate and subvert the US Constitution.

Absolutely right, it really is mind-boggling. You know, W. hears voices, that's no joke. He's concluded they're messages from God.

Money, plain and simple. Eisenhower was so concerned about the future of the world, and the Cold War, that his last act as President was to deliver a speech to the American public on television. His message was a dire warning about the power of the military-industrial complex. He could see how military ethics, and moral judgements about war, politics, and foreign policy were becoming increasingly perverted by large American corporations. The Republicans have always been married to the military. They know who signs the checks. The American Constitution? Only if it doesn't interfere with business as usual.

I highly recommend a documentary film that won the 2005 Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival called Why We Fight by Eugene Jarecki.

Wiki Link- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Why_We_Fig … 05_film%29

It's all about that, it'll blow your mind. It describes in detail the maintenance of the military-industrial complex with respect to American wars in general, but also with respect to the 2003 invasion of Iraq.

That may well be the most accurate description, but it's not the most important one. Their underlying philosophy of government is so pernicious that their incompetence is actually a blessing: Given what they're trying to accomplish...

...if they were even vaguely competent, things would be worse -- much worse -- rather than better. It's only because they've been so incompetent, not to mention corrupt and entirely un-nuanced, in implementing their programs that we liberals/progressives have been able to call "bullshit" on them to the extent we have. A smarter, more skillful man with W's worldview is my very worst nightmare.
