Re: mmm

Yes, we used to see signs like that on the drive between Phoenix and Yuma--there's a prison out there in the middle of the desert.

Re: mmm

Khanada Faye, did you know that there are plans in the works to turn parts of Sing Sing in Ossining, NY into a museum? It would be the first working maximum security prison to do anything like that. Apart from the obvious safety concern, one has to beg the question- Are we really so de-sensitized to the issue of overcrowding in corporate prisons, and so de-sensitized to the issue of crime and poverty that we have to turn a prison into a "theme park" of sorts??

I did not know that.  I understand turning facilities that are no longer in use into museums, but one that's currently functioning?  It does seem to disregard what such a place is for--what's the next step, you can pay ten grand to spend a night in the prison and see "what it's really like!"?  I blame reality TV.

As a side note, isn't Sing Sing where Sally Tomato is incarcerated in Breakfast at Tiffany's?

Considering what is likely to happen to you in prison ( especially if your a guy) I think you can experience that outside of jail for a lot less than 10 grand :)

ALcatraz has been a tourist trap for several years.

What a long, strange trip it's been

Yah, but Alcatraz is no longer a working prison; it is a national historical site.

I don't know what the plan is for Sing-Sing, but I note that we made the jump from "museum" to "theme park" pretty quickly. Suppose what they are doing is taking some no-longer-used part of the facility and turning it into a serious historical museum? That wouldn't seem so crass, would it? Sadly, the history of "corrections" is an all-too-important part of our national history.
