Red's Infinite Playlist - Happy Friday all!

Okay so it's not really a playlist as such, and it's certainly not infinite, but rather a collection of Youtube videos that happen to also be New Wave (or new wave adjacent at least) AKA the best and most vague genre there is. I've been listening to a lot of these for a couple years now, and some I just found recently, but similar to the "what are you currently into" thread this is a wee collection of songs and artists that I dig quite a bit to celebrate the end of another week. Feel free to add suggestions and/or let me know what you think!

Rip It Up - Orange Juice
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UzPh89tD5pA

Outlook For Thursday - DD Smash
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-TIj-l3nykw

(Keep Feeling) Fascination - The Human League
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QqqBs6kkzHE

Secret Separation - The Fixx

Voices Carry - 'Til Tuesday
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uejh-bHa4To

She Sells Sanctuary - The Cult
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZCOSPtyZAPA

Happy House - Siouxsie and the Banshees
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=amR6-neQBPE

The Look of Love - ABC
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cNEdxZURTaI

Hounds of Love - Kate Bush

She is truly magnificent. I particularly love the music video for Hounds of Love too. She can sometimes sway a little too far into the Avant Garde for my taste but I appreciate her creativity.

Oh heck yeah olayesaj!! Thanks for the contribution, I really dig it. It sounds familiar, like maybe I've heard it (or something similar) in a tv show or something?

Re: Red's Infinite Playlist - Happy Friday all!

Haha I completely agree! I have Everything's Different Now on vinyl (as well as Voices Carry, I'm just missing Welcome Home) but I have found that newbies to TT tend to enjoy Voices Carry more than other songs I've shown them. I think the opening riff grabs them quicker than some of their other slightly less poppy sounding jams? Looking Over My Shoulder is another one I often show people because it's intensely Bowie-sounding, but they reference Voices Carry in the film clip so I usually just show that first.

I also really love Limits To Love and it's one of my favourite songs lyrically.

Re: Red's Infinite Playlist - Happy Friday all!

Oh that's also very cool! I'll admit that the off tempo-ness hurts my brain ever so slightly but I still rather like it. The vocals reminds me a wee bit of Grant Lee Buffalo. Here in Melbourne it's rainy and overcast and that song fits it really nicely actually! It's not anything like it at all, but for some reason it made me think of Lemon Jelly whom I haven't listened to in ages. This song is one of my favourites. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kihhcgkxgck

And thank you for the video request, that's really nice to hear! To be honest, the fact that I'll soon be in my late 30's and that I'm a fair bit chubbier than when I last did IFM has made me a wee bit hesitant to contribute. I was known as a slender youngen, and to offer something different this time round is a bit intimidating. When Dylan went electric people lost their damn minds. Change is scary to most. And yes I just inexplicably compared myself to Bob Dylan.

I would actually really love to do video diaries though. The more relaxed vibe and just being able to discuss things as they come to me in my own time is really appealing. I'm rubbish at interview/Q and A type things but I think I'd find it a lot easier with a more free style. We shall see. I'm defs keen though.

Re: Red's Infinite Playlist - Happy Friday all!

haha i wasnt expecting that lemon jelly one but i do really appreciate that grant lee buffalo mention for the vocals like you said.  i'm always looking for new songs about everyday because one of my favorite things is to listen to songs while riding a bike, mostly slow to mid tempo contemporary instrumental jazz but some vocal songs too and i think that will be a good addition to it. about present day you though, i can't see being discouraged at all from enjoying your return especially a video diary, and with you saying your keen, i will remain hopeful.

ooh, bodies changing during the pandemic and as we get older, I can empathize!

IFM has had some gorgeous curvey contributors lately like Olivia G, Samara L, Freya_T, and Tessa_M.  Its nice seeing wiry bodies and skinny bodies and 'middleweight' bodies and people as magnificent as _hyperballad_.  Just like we get carefree contributors, and contributors who want to 'say' something, and contributors who separate Feck from the rest of their lives, and contributors who film with their significant others.  People are diverse even if they are jilling off on the Internet.

I'm not sure I'd call any of them are curvy.  If you did follow-up videos, Red, I'd treasure  them!

Re: Red's Infinite Playlist - Happy Friday all!

I appreciate the comment priv, but the examples you gave are somewhat not at all what I would consider curvy? Which makes me think you'd be disappointed to see what my kind of curvy is now. I'm not a size 8-10 with a little bit more of a butt or boobs. I'm now a 12-14 (for reference I used to be a 6-10, depending on what area it was) with a bigger butt, boobs, thighs, face, and (most noticeably) a gut. I actually love it. I was that thin for so many years due to intense anxiety, so my weight gain a few years ago was a result of living in a happy home with my friends and being in a healthy relationship. When it first happened it was a shock not being able to fit into most of my clothes anymore, and I definitely felt self conscious, but I've grown into it and really love it. So the issue isn't so much about how I feel, but rather the fact that I'm very aware of a lack of weight diversity in every type of media we consume, from children's cartoons to porn to regular ol' movies. Yes, it's getting better but the overwhelming majority still tells us that slim is the default (and preferred) setting.

Sometimes I feel like Baby Jane. Remembering the glory days and fretting about what people will think about their comeback. Instead of standing in a dusty old room awkwardly singing "I've Written a Letter to Daddy" though I'm standing in front of a mirror looking at my tum and thinking about how I don't look like the lean bean I once was. People liked the lean bean but will they accept the pumpkin?

Re: Red's Infinite Playlist - Happy Friday all!

Hi _redbird_, I am sorry I was awkward again!

Its hard to find the right words because any way of talking about bodies and fat can hurt people.  I was trying to say that there had been some contributors recently who were closer to the midpoint between "all muscle and bone" and "impressively jiggly."  I wish I had found better words.

I know someone else who has lost weight due to health problems and is annoyed by people telling her that she is too skinny.

Edit: right now, my chest and my waist are about the same size.  Two years ago my waist was about 10 cm (4") smaller than my chest, and my chest was about 5 cm (2") smaller, and my weight was about 15 kg / 30 pounds lighter (I know because I sew and I had to re-measure myself because patterns were not fitting any more).

I definitely get that. It's fine line between being observational and complimentary or just being flat out rude. And there's lots of things to take into account when it comes to wording and examples of different bodies. I will say though that I know for a fact that _hyperballad_ has been called "pendulous" in extremely negative ways before so it's best to leave descriptive words like that out of the conversation. Even if "magnificently" was used before the offending word, it cancels it out because of the harmful association with it. Our HB is a tough cookie for sure but she still has feelings and a heart as big as the moon. As someone with a large labia I've had people compliment my "meaty flaps" and it's like cool, thanks for liking my genitals but please don't call them that. They may have prefaced it with "I absolutely love" but having someone call a part of you "meaty flaps" is never going to feel nice.

It's baffling to me how people can think it's okay to comment on another person's weight so freely like the person who said that to your friend. I know not everyone doing so does it out of malice but you still have to be very careful. I once worked at a cafe with someone who told a regular customer "Oh! You've lost weight! You look great!!" and the customer explained that they had recently been dumped by their long term partner and the weight loss was due to severe depression. My co-worker was absolutely mortified and I don't think I've ever heard someone apologise so much before. She obviously didn't mean to be so insensitive, but I think it's pretty emblematic of society's preoccupation with weight that she felt the need to say anything at all.

Re: Red's Infinite Playlist - Happy Friday all!

I am sorry if I offended _hyperballad_ sad  I agree that in media the bodies we see tend to be on the 'slight' end of human variation.  I wish I knew better words to talk about this better.

Re: Red's Infinite Playlist - Happy Friday all!

You've edited your comment and seem to be taking these things on board so while offense was caused I personally appreciate your effort. I absolutely am not speaking on hyperballad's behalf though, that's her business.

Either way, we've kinda derailed this thread some talking about boobies and bodies when we should really be discussing my extremely excellent taste in music, yes? wink

I'm insufferably recommending stuff to people all the time but genuinely like hearing what other's are into so comment away should you feel the urge.

i would like to say please excuse my superfluous words that resulted in this, though points made have been duly acknowledged, but this was supposed to be about the music like said, and i really was enjoying hearing the gift of the things you know and think, and should have just stayed with enjoying that conversation

Whoah that song is so cool!! I've not heard it before but it's so rad that the actress sang the song in her episode. It's ever so slightly creepy in that old-timey way that I really love. I once had my housemate complain to me that I was playing "too much serial killer music" because I was listening to Patience and Prudence so much. After he said that I completely understood what he meant. I still think it's great though.

Heck yes!! I made myself slightly sick of that kind of cowboy jam a few years back, but I'm slowly coming back to it. It's really cool though. Have you heard Daniel Lanois & Heavy Sun - That’s The Way It Is before? I know it from Red Dead Redemption 2 but have pretty obsessively listened to it a lot lately. Also HOLY SHIT I love love love Werewolves Of London. I heard it years ago while out and really loved it but when I got home I couldn't find it online because I was rather drunk and couldn't remember the werewolf part so was just googling "awooooooooo" song.

It took me a minute to figure out why people are losing their absolute shit over Lil Nas X's new song... Safe to say I get it now - I've probably listened to it 10 + times since I first heard it yesterday
