I grew up adoring sex scenes - my first memory of feeling arousal was during the scene in Rocky Horror Picture Show, when the good doctor has not one but two simultaneous sex scenes, switching between the beds of Janet and Brad, and giving them both the night of their lives. I'd search for sexy scenes, rewind them - I didn't even care if I watched them with a parent in the room. In fact, sometimes the awkwardness made it hotter for me. I love sex scenes. One of my very favourites is that sexy blue-lit one from True Romance.... when she licks slowly down his belly... and after, the way their sillouhettes hold hands, sitting apart from one another...
anyway, since I love sex scenes so much I found this article in the Atlantic super interesting. It's about "intimacy" coaching. I didn't realise sex scenes didn't use to have choreography... and when you think about it, that's so scary. Guidance would help so much to make two actors feel like they aren't just pawing at each other - guidance and choreography would create boundaries and prevent people from feeling violated or being scared to violate.
I remember one time, I was trying out for a really bizarre short art film, it was a super weird set-up. I actually ran into Magnolia there. the idea was to find two people for the main roles who had chemistry, like primal animal game-of-thrones style chemistry. So what they did was have each of us in pairs do simulated fucking while the director watched.
It was like, fun for a lark but actually kind of scary. We all wanted the part so we tried to be convincing but I ended up just being kind of mauled and tossed and molested by all these guys, who weren't really feeling or connecting with me but rather just trying to be "hot"! and actually some guys did feel and connect, and that was even weirder!
So yeah, undirected simulated sex is weird. Read that article, tell me what you think.
And also - what's your favourite movie sex scene?

Interesting article. I think its a good thing that more thought and care is being put into sex scenes. It really should be handled carefully to ensure all the actors are comfortable, and in turn, to help covey the scene better. I think this sort of practice could only lead to better sex scenes overall.
My favorite sex scenes don't come from movies, but from one particular TV show - The L Word. There are so many hot moments in that show! Better yet, its often more than just "these two characters have sex." The sex scenes were often creative, artistic, intimate, which just made it all hotter. And much of this was shot over a decade ago! A couple that stand out to me:
- There's a moment where two characters are sharing a jail cell and they both masturbate while fantasizing out loud about having sex with each other. https://youtu.be/U7W6VWVbWyE
- Another moment where two characters are at an opera, and one character reaches over and fingers the other during one of the performances. https://youtu.be/yGikQNm5cEI
I've never really delved behind the scenes on The L Word, so I don't really know how the actors are truly feeling during scenes like these (and there are plenty more besides these two). I wonder how it all was handled back then.

Wow those are amazing sex scenes... the vibes are so strong even though you see no nudity at all. That kind of thing is the most erotic in the world... it's so liminal, the space between non-desire and actual naked sex. I wish I could stay there forever.

Hi Viva, I loooooveeee this thread because it relates so much to my journey of sexual exploration. Mainstream porn really didn't do it for me as a young teen so I started exploring elsewhere and came across the mass amount of 'artsy' sex in arthouse and indie cinema. I got obsessed with Larry Clark's films (v v v risque and controversial in its sexual content), Lars Von Trier's films and even Titanic and the Notebook (embarassing). Even cringey sex scenes were interesting to me. American Pie whilst so lame, satisfied my need to see any kind of sex on screen. Any films with sex became porn to me and I watched scenes over and over. Yes Viva to Rocky Horror!! Those gold hot pants.... (I'm trying to convince my boyfriend to buy some hehe)
Sex scenes in movies still get me going so so much. Or even having sex in the movies hehe.
What other sex scenes do people love?
Offline
Nothing embarassing about titanic and the notebook girl! romance is super hot.
does anyone remember the Sens8 orgy scene? dear god that was so hot... the ... because they're all connected through their minds though their bodies are in different places, and you've been following their connection as it deepens and grows, and you care about them all, and then they're fucking, and then they're all fucking, in all the different locations where their bodies are.. and it's so powerful!
You can see it here, but it's so much more powerful when you've watched the show.
Also I love everything Spike and Buffy on Buffy... yeah it's controversial, but noncon is a thing for me and I just... it's so hot. especially knowing the characters and the feelings and.. also I went on a Buffy s. 4-8 binge the summer I was first falling in love with my now-boyfriend and we were in love with each other and Buffy and like sending gifs and the feelings were so intense that those sex scenes and sex-adjacent scenes are branded into my brain and heart.
Bertolucci's The Dreamers also made a huge impression on a young me... three-ways with two men is one of my top fantasies, and Eva green is so beautiful and that film is just everything.
I also liked Y Tu Mama Tambien...
And I guess I'm really giving myself away here but, brutal and love triangle with two men, "Je Taime Moi Non Plus" omg...
OMG and who could forget Secretary? So hot, strange, emotional...

Super good question! Who else's grandma taped (wildly inappropriate) movies from the TV? I may have mentioned this before but Cinema Paradiso is one that I was OBSESSED with - such a hot scene in a crowded cinema, no seats - the camera pans across the audience and we just see a couple "subtly" fucking underneath big trench coats while everyone else is watching the movie.. I would re-wind and watch that scene over and over
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cinema_Paradiso
Another one scene that stuck with me even though I only saw it once when I was really young is Oscar and Lucinda
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oscar_and_Lucinda_(film)
I found this description, "A woman, who's tending to Oscar after his long trip, runs her hands up his leg to his crotch. She then gathers up her dress, squats over his lap and has sex with him. While we don't see any nudity, we do see her movement and hear some sexual sounds." basically she rapes a gambling obsessed minister while hes unconscious in a period outfit - something about the masses of white cotton skirts, the power of it and the general wrongness is like - too much.
Oof I could list so many more - eek!

The Dreamers is soooooo fucking good. I love those art school revolution feelings.

Yessss to The Dreamers Viva! The scene where they have sex for the first time on the kitchen floor made me SO turned on. The whole dreamy vibe of the movie made the hot sex stand out so much. Ugh! Love. Another one I was thinking about was Blue is the Warmest Colour. A pretty recent one and I know its pretty controversial because the incredibly long sex scene is v gratuitous, however I also found that scene SUCH a turn on like wow their sexual chemistry is mind blowing.

A recentish movie full of sex scenes that I liked was Love by Gaspar Noe, mostly because I am in love with the actress Aomi Muyock, she is so gorgeous and so incredible. The main male character is a bit of a clueless doofus, but whatever. Some of the scenes are a bit silly like the 3D POV scene of the main actor's dick cumming at the camera and simulating jizz splashing out onto the audience. Even that was enjoyable in a way, sex can be silly and over the top like that scene, though I am not sure that was the director's intent lol. But the scene I liked most was the threesome they filmed in one long shot over the bed, which was covered in red silk and they played Maggot Brain by Funkadelic. I've had sex to that song so many times it's so hot.

This song is so hot, goddamn.
OK so that brings us to a whole new topic. cause I brought my boyfriend home to my house complete with roommates the other night, and we were all silly and making out after our date and then started going at it and I'm like... shit we need music or something. We usually are at his place where we have total privacy and I don't think about it and I'm super loud. But yeah, so we're naked and I pull away to do this music thing, and my brain is already gone to wherever it goes when I get turned on, I can't think. I did find a majestic casual playlist and just put it on and it did the job - but I wish I'd had maggot brain.
so what else you guys got? best albums to have sex to? best songs? best song-sex memories?
I used to be partial to "history of otis redding", it was an amazing slow, dimly sunlit, afternoon sex album...

Otis ooooohhhhhhh Viva you hit the nail on the head there. My boyfriend and I are always in the same boat. Things are heating up, I've probably peeled his clothes off and begged him to take mine off. It's 8pm ish and his housemates rooms are awfully close. I am LOUD. I can't help it. The only ways I can handle the sensations of sex in my sensitive body are to make noise and claw. So he jumps up to put music on and we always just end up back at Jungle, and sometimes Pond (random). Please give recommendations~! (playing Maggot brain right now hehe)

As a movie buff who is fascinated by the history of both cinema and human sexuality I simple had to reopen this topic. For starters: here's a resource on a website I often use for obscure movie data https://www.filmsite.org/sexinfilms-index.html.
It contains detains and graphic stills from the early days of film at the turn of the twentieth century to the present with up dates every years. Admittedly the more recent entires are few and rather underwhelming. The closer you are the present, the harder it is too decide what's truly noteworthy with no way of knowing how reputations will change over time. Plus it doesn't just contains some of the best depictions of sex, nudity, and taboo breaking presentations of sexuality, but many of the worse of these things as well. So feel free to look around and see what you can find by year.

Does anyone have a thing for the undershirt bondage in Starship Troopers? I never got to play with that in real life.
Viva, I like the idea of choosing a "hide our thumping and sighing" album before you are all hot and bothered and just want to get your hands on something more fun than the buttons of your CD player!

Don't feel ashamed _catherine_! Mainstream films and professional sports put a lot of effort into showing people sexy images and motions and stories. We aren't supposed to say that the tennis player has a nice ass or that we'd like the news announcer to be telling us what to do in that firm confident voice but the people who design the event or direct the shoot have that in mind. Saying that you don't like something you liked when you were younger just shows that you learned from life (or that what makes something entertaining is not the same as lets it survive a lot of criticism and analysis).
"even having sex in the movies" ... did you ever try the "sexy stuff in a quiet row of the theatre" thing? I would be so nervous somebody would see or hear us.

I loved a lot of sex scenes growing up, but was super anxious about my parents ever being in the same room let alone watching them with me. Growing up a horny teenager in the 90s buying actually porn felt beneath me so whatever I rented from Blockbuster video had to be of some quality. So I was very selective. Needing to find something with story, characters, nudity, and sex, I was not easy to please. Skipped over in anything which a lot of silly T&A on the covers and went for a lot of foreign films that often had great sex scene, but ended in tragedy. Like Water for Chocolate being a good example.
One of my favorites though was Risky Business. About the only American teen sex comedy where the sex scenes felt like a something from a European film. I didn't even know that famous train scene was going to be there until a saw it and...YOW! Not only was their great build up and music, but you could tell by their body language they were both so into. Also brilliant was how they shot parts of it from the waste up, but still captured the feeling of moving with a moving vehicle making it super erotic without being explicit.
This is about the only clip I could find the didn't just use some extension of either the Phil Collin or Tangerine Dream songs. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BKOpN1Q4fNQ Though the other cuts are good two this is just closest to the original film, (which I highly recommend BTW)

Speaking of Phil Collins, Risky Business was also the first time I'd ever heard In The Air Tonight and it took me a while to realize it wasn't really written for the film. Cut ahead to 2013 (I think) and the song is used it's entirety to great effect in another really hot sex scene. From the Pilot episode of The Americans https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D2XvDH-ATzY&t=2s The song is perfectly fitting since this scene is such a turning put in there lives. You'd have to see the whole episode to know why, but it's still easy to follow on it's on
I'll admit that part of the reason I was first curious about this show was the though of seeing Keri Russell doing multiple sex scenes since I had a huge crush on her growing up from Felicity. But it turns out this is just an incredible show period. Intense and challenging, but incredible.

Thank you Viva.
Tell me, do you have any interested in how older movies managed to suggest sex without being able to show as much do to tighter censorship? It's quite fascinating. That's why I included the fimsite.org article for the less familiar with classic cinema. I plan to add links some of my favorite sex scenes without the sex soon, if not tonight.
It's just kind of sad to me that so many people still talk like the oldest movie ever made if Jaws. Sure the further you go back in time the harder it is to adjust to changing standards, but that's true with anything new. Same with foreign films. Some cleaver American filmmakers during the period after the Production Code was mandated and before the rating system found many was to excite the imagination.

I am interested for sure, but I'm not positive older ideas of suggestive and sexy would resonate with me. Or, some do and some dont! Do you have any clips in mind?

Oh yes!
Here's one of favorites my from the 1955 Alfred Hitchcock romantic thriller To Catch a Thief. The dialogue sets up most of the important plot points, but in case you're not familiar here's the basic set up. Cary Grant is retired cat burglary in the French Rivera trying to find out whose behind some resent jewel thefts that put him under suspicion. Grace Kelly is the daughter of wealthy widow whose family jewels are perfect target for trapping the real thief, but her hots for him complicate his plans.
Several things worth noticing: Her repeated reference to the family jewel she temps him with. The way her face vanishes behind a shadow around the one minute mark with her necklace and her cleavage in focus. His statement that the only words I'd have to describe your crazy plans are censorable. Right before she's punched on the couch and tells him despite his supposed this interest I know where eyes are really looking. And of course his slipping his hand under the necklace before the line about what's not imitation before the final blowout.

Oh the joys of sexy time and housemates! Luckily my housemates are super chill, because I can be very loud sometimes - especially when doing anal. One of my housemates actually said to me not too long "I have never heard someone that i'm not having sex with, orgasm as much as i've heard you..." hahaha he is such a good sport.
I am looking into ways to soundproof my room - my walls are really thick but I think the noise escapes through my wardrobe!
