I have a fun day-trip for you folks Down Under.
---
The other night I had an experience I'd never had before. I enjoyed a bottle of wine SO much, it was so FUCKING FANTASTIC, that I truly wanted to have sex with it.
I wanted to either penetrate every part of myself with the almost empty bottle (sorry if that's a disturbing image)
OR to have a woman there whose body I loved and on whom I could slather the rest of its contents and lick it off of her.
Forever.
I have been a wine lover for many years, and I've been enjoying Australian wines since 1988, but I have never, ever, had this kind of pleasure.
It was almost like synesthesia.
Once, when I was renovating my house (an old bungalow), I went through a period of being so intensely affected by the beauty of certain woods that it was almost erotic. I recall needing to have a new threshold milled. The carpenter wanted some guidance about what grain of wood to use. I took him into the room, and gestured down.
"Do you see this threshold?"
"Yes."
"Do you see how the grain is so tight and fine, and so perfectly angled against the profile?"
"Oh yeah."
"Do you see how you can feel the grain against your thumb when you rub it?"
"Yeah. Dude! It's STOUT!"
(He was a stoner. A very sexy stoner and a very talented woodworker. That was his word for every rough piece, and every finished piece of wood that he liked: "Stout.")
"Go through the stack of quartersawn in the basement and find a piece you like. The only thing to keep in mind: I want to love your new threshold the way I love THIS one.
When I see THIS one, this is what happens: I start to crave it.
If i COULD, I would either EAT it,
or FUCK it. Do you get me?
I would FUCK this threshold.
I would have SEX with it."
"Dude."
"Do you understand?"
"Wow. Yeah. I got it."
"Good."
We didn't know each other that well yet. You should have seen his face.
That was an intense time, my summer of wood.
I was, shall we say, obsessed.
While I don't think I'll ever again become so focused on non-human elements in an almost-erotic way, what I felt the other night brought all of that back. The bottle, the wine, the remnants left that i kept swirling around, not wanting it to be over, not wanting to lose the sensation of it over my tongue.
In retrospect, as I think of it now, part of it was simply that it was so, so good. The wine guy, who's no poseur, had recommended it, and had given me a great price, because, he said, they weren't going to be able to carry it anymore.
I bought two bottles, the last two there were, and held onto them for some months. One I gave to a friend for his 30th birthday. (I had no idea at the time what I was giving away. Thirty IS a big deal, but GOD I hope he liked it!)
The other has been sitting in my house and I decided to open it for twelfth night, because it's muscat wine and i only wanted a bit and knew it would keep for months once open, unlike the other wines in the house.
So, partly my experience was so intense because it was just that good.
And part of it, I think, was that it's the exact consistency, unlike regular wines, and even eisewines, of a woman's wetness.
Not as thick as port or sweet sherry, and certainly not as unctuous.
It's like -- oh my god.
how to describe?
Like a woman, when she's really aroused and you haven't touched her yet, and you get there and it coats your hand and bathes your tongue -- but not as thick as when she's ovulating.
Anyway.
So there's that.
And also, something about the way it comes out of the bottle.
Made me want to fuck it.
::sigh::
_______
So!!
Here's the deal! I went to the wine guy today. Thanked him for the recommendation. He said, oh, yeah, I remember that. That was some great shit. No one bought it, and they're not making it anymore.
WHAT??
I doubt that. I think they're just not IMPORTING it anymore.
I told him he had a buyer now, and he said, ok, I need to find a replacement. Cuz you can't get that stuff anymore.
Well, the info on the bottle says that this vineyard has been in the family, on a piece of land in North Eastern Victoria, for six generations.
That's where you guys come in. You Aussies. I could not find it on line.
The bottle of muscat that had me climbing the walls this week -- you people could experience it.
I mean, come to think of it, you could even experience it!

heh heh heh, she said' "wood"!
Siobhan, you might try some Chileans (or even some Peruvians). Of course, it's the microclimate and terroir which ultimately make the vin, but they come from very similar lineage.
And, of course, it's for our hearts. Yeah, our hearts. That's the ticket...

Lovely post Chere. Vintage Siobhan. Good luck with the wine hunt. There are some very good wine merchants here in Leeds and a lot of Ausie wine is imported into the UK. I'll ask. You never know your luck.

Here is a nice review of the wine in question.
The Chambers family owns and runs the vineyard. Funny how some of the surnames in different parts of the British Empire seem so common, and yet are not. i mean to my ear. I've never known anyone in the States or in London or in Cape Town with that surname. I wonder if it's common in Australia??
One of my favourite singers is Kasey Chambers, about whom I've not spoken on the music thread. Is it the same family, I wonder, or are there tons of Chambers in those parts?
But the main point here is - if you wanted a taste of what i was tasting, the review link above is good.

As you are aware, Siobhan, Kasey's records are a family endeavour. And no, this ain't the ...listen... thread, but cross pollination almost always results in a stronger hybrid!

I used to spend a bit of time up in Rutherglen when I could drink wine without getting a shitty headache. I bought a stack of it there a few years ago and recently found 2 boxes in a cupboard at home, and handed it out my friends. It was all corked. Among the collection was a bottle of Grange Hermitage, widely regarded as Aus' best wine, sometimes fetching over $1000 a bottle. I am not game to open it, I think I'd rather die with it intact than find out I wrecked it by not cellaring it.
Siobahn, we'll do some research for you.

It's possible to order the wine direct from the winery. Not sure if they'll freight it outside Australia. The latest order form and newsletter can be found here
I'm not a muscat drinker myself but I am impressed with Siobhan's review. I wonder if the winery would be interested in using her eloquent rhapsody in future advertising of their products?

Hey Elfman, got home last night. Just starting to catch up with my internet reading now. Thought I'd start with IFM and then move around the web. No time yet to watch any of the videos, but I've started downloading a few for later.

Welcome home. We've missed you.
And how. I saw in the news that that the Todd is flowing. When I first visited the Alice, I was waiting in line at a shop and the guy next to me was your iconic old prospector, complete with overalls, big belly and grey beard. He commented that it looks like it's gonna rain, but I had to doubt him, as it was a gorgeous day, not a cloud in the sky. He replied that he'd seen the 'blackfellas' climbing out of the dry river bed (where some choose to camp). They always know, he explained. Sure enough, within a couple of hours it had clouded over and rained in torrents. How they knew, I don't know - perhaps they can read the signs from the wildlife, or they have an innate sense - or maybe they just heard the forecast!

I saw sleeping bags and blankets draped over tree branches along the river yesterday when I went into town. All the hostels and town camps are full until the waters recede. I was meant to arrive home Thursday night, just as well I delayed a day as all the roads to my part of town were closed until Friday.
It is lovely and cool tonight, makes for a nice change here in summer.
I see it's raining over north-east Victoria and southern NSW around Thredbo - great news for those in the bushfire areas.

How often does the river flow?
Not often. This is the most rain we've had (in summer) for 6 years according to the newspaper. Generally it only flows every couple of years, and then it's only for a day or two at most. But I've been here nearly 3 years and I've seen it flow 4 times now. Sometimes it only lasted for less than a day, but it was enough to make folk stop and look. This is the biggest flow I've seen.
Last week's rain was heavier than usual and the water flowed for nearly 4 days. It's still a bit soggy out there today. Takes a few days for all the water that fell in the catchment area north of town to flow downstream into the town and out through Heavitree Gap.
Everything should be back to dry, dusty and sandy by next week.
They say if you've seen the Todd flow 3 times you're doomed to die here in the Alice.
