A delightful conversation between Gala and Liandra but on a more musical note I bought some new cd's ingluding Sig Howdy by Jello Biafra with the Melvins, Double Nickles on the Dime by the Minutemen, an Einsturzende Neubauten album I can't remeber the crazy german title of, a Robert Johnston compilation and a country album I'm not willing to admit to.

Sweet Jesus this guy is a treasure. And he comes in so many flavors! Palace et al., the one you noted, his own sweet Will Oldham- and he can act, too (most recently in Junebug).
Sorry, Cate slipped in whilst I was typing- see previous
Oh, and come on, Cate- if you bought it you can cop to it!

That's a really nice clip Max it reminds me very much of a great german movie called Stozeck where a group of german immigrants try and fail to live the american dream.

Just got back from seeing Jeff Tweedy. He was prepared to open his soul; unfortunately, the crowd was in a "Heavy Metal Drummer" mode. I was looking forward to the acoustic deconstruction of his songs, but the crowd just pissed him off, and never detected the sarcasm directed toward shrieks and requests for Doobie Bros. Ah, well, did get an exquisite "I Am Trying To Break Your Heart".

wait a sec. wait a sec.
so much good music information being conveyed here. i'm late to this thread.
First, I should say that I've jumped into the forum to see if anyone anwered my burning Q on the youtube thread and THANK YOU JESUS - I MEAN BISH!!!
i'm so grateful.
NOW.
jwhite -- WHO was in Junebug????
Junebug is ONLY one of my favorite movies of the past coupla years, and it has the added advantage of being the only, yes, folks, ONLY film to come out in the past decade that actually shows MY one "type" of people from my region in any way that is close to TRUE. If you want to know what the working class middle class white North Carolinian life is like, Junebug fucking NAILS it.
Plus it's got some verry hot sex in it.
AND one of my dear friends has a fairly big role in the film.
Which he also nailed.
So -- now i'm just AQUIVER with excitement.
Since I'm totally in love with this guy Sufjan (and I see I have company! hi max.), are you sayuing that HE was in Junebug?? How did I miss this????
::sigh:::

I think jwhite was stating that Will Oldham is the guy in Junebug. I can't see it being Sufjan, who I understand is supposed to be a bag of nerves in front of crowds & cameras; he's turned down countless invites to perform on shows like Leno because of it, bless him.

Thank you Cal, and so true.
Sorry to get your hopes up, Siobhan, (and congratulations! I didn't know where to weigh in with all that gushing) but it is the bearded one. You can find lots of Sufjan on the web, though; and, if lucky, you get to see a show with the kitchen sink (ok, just an orchestra)! Crtics often lump him with Devendra Banhart, but for my money, he's the one that will last. For those unaware, it is Stevens' stated goal to do a record for all fifty states. Just two down- but that has taken four years, so the project will not be finished in my lifetime. But oh, the delicious anticipation....
And here's a new direction for this thread- does that endorphin rush of a new relationship cause a band or performer to become extra special to you? I know we often refer to "our song", but does it extend to "our band"?
For my wife and I, part of our courting was mixtapes, and a very special part was Crowded House (and the Finns in all their glorious combinations). Unfortunately, it makes listening to "Don't Dream It's Over" and "Better Be Home Soon" ineffably sad now....

Just to whet your appetite, there was a rumour doing the rounds on the net late last year that Will Oldham and Sufjan have agreed to collaborate on the Kentucky album (the bearded one is from Louisville). Sufjan has sometimes conceded in interviews that the only way he will ever complete the 50 States Project is by getting some help along the way, so it might not be so far-fetched.
Sounds like the next record is a concept album about birds (of the winged variety), though.

Hmm....
Kentucky is geographically contiguous (altho my bet was going to be Nebraska, with its own enfant terrible, Conor Oberst- God knows he's prolific enough!).

The Bluetones.
The entire back catalouge.
This was a band who I was a huge fan of a number of years back before I kindof forgot about them. Then after seeing them in concert at the beginning of the month I've decided to order those albums I didn't already have. I missed out on some brilliant songs/tunes. Glad to have picked them back up now.

Wow, that brings back some memories. They were pretty big for a while in the mid-90's, in fact they may have even got to #1 ('Slight Return'?).
Didn't realise they were still going, good for them!

Well, VH1 recently had another one-hit wonder anthology show that I couldn't not watch.
Who remembers these gems?
Soft Cell "Tainted Love"
Gary Numan "Cars"
Tom Tom Club "Genius of Love"

Sygarius, are you familiar with "Take A Ride" by Luscious Jackson from Fever In Fever Out?

Ride - "Howard Hughes" (on repeat for a couple of hours at least)
A little known b-side to "Twisterella" that is just as good, if not better, than anything that came out on "Going Blank Again".

Yeah, that's him. I think that Leonardo DiCaprio film, "The Aviator", is about him. He went really batshit during his last years.

Shut your mouth, sgf, Going Blank is an epic in the shoegazing pantheon! Ride have a wonderful best of which I would recommend as a primer on that sort of thing in mid-80's Blighty. And where is Andy Bell now?
