And there, for all the world, is the living (in this case, sadly, dead) embodiment of Louche-ness. Momus-louche. Rod Stewart- no matter how hard he tries- wannabe.
BTW, Annoula, is this a deeper identity or greater confidence in this world. My Greek is not so hot and mainly medical and historic (ie ancient); I can almost lay hands on its' meaning, but not quite. And googling, for me, is cheating.

It is an identity that is true to only me so it is deeper.
Itr also is one of my real names so It is about confidence as well. Since my first one was real as well, seems i have more confidence than i originally thought!
BTW, jwhite, i am intrigued to learn what your meaning would be.
My Ancient Greek is nonexistant.
And Googling is cheating only if you are addicted to challenges

Seems like -oula is an affectionate diminutive. My latin messes me up here, but good year, or some such?
Ilistened to quirky singer-songwriters yesterday- would recommend all.
Jen Trynin
Jill Sobule
Victoria Williams
Vic's record of standards, "VW Sings Some Ol' Songs" is either spectacularly ill-conceived or among the greatest reimaginings of the popular songboook ever.
I had both opinions while listening, sometimes concurrently. Who said the inability to entertain contradictory notions at the same time is the sign of an inflexible mind? Sounds like Wilde or Bierce.

Dear Anna. How appropriate that should be one of your names, and that your lover should wish to refer to you by that name.

While I'm thrilled to have you as our new Greek tourism coordinator (and would you also consider being our Greek teacher?! I'd love that), I think expertise in general is sorely over-rated.
With one exception, a person who now no longer posts much, we've fortunately not had people who needed to feel superior about anything here, I don't think. We're all just people, sharing ourselves as much as we're able, doing the best we can -- and that's what makes it such a great place to be

My new fave cd for today is
Essential Asian Flavas. Hits, beats and new grooves...
Asian urban sound at it's best. Great for dancing around alone.
The best track though is a smooth moody sexy tune called Sings (bonobo mix) by Badmarsh & Shri featuring UK Apache...phew....

I remember a T&A movie called "Summer Lovers", basically an excuse to show nekkid wimmen (no wieners on display- never have figured out how that's fair), shot on a beautiful island in the Pelopponese. I was enthralled by the sun's reflection fron the white masonry, the beauty of the clash between earth and sea, and the existence of places where people could be naked without everyone gawking. I'd love to know of places such as that. I have a good friend from Bari, who returns each summer, and i will accompany him this year. I could, if properly guided, make it an annual event.
Which leads to another topic- how do you furriners view Americans these days? I know that, at least in the case of Greece, some dislike is justified for the CIA support of the general's junta when the king was deposed. Does that carry over to the average American, or is that an official kind of thing? Could a 50-ish guy travel alone and have a good time? I've read of so many places I would one day like to see.
And, Annoula, is there any Greek popular music we should know about? I know Nana Mouskouri (not my stuff, but I appreciate her talent) and Vangelis, but can't come up with anything else. We Americans are cultural imperialists in pop music - we send our raw material overseas to be prettied up and returned to us - but the raw materials can be pretty awesome; Elvis, Muddy, the Carters. Of course the return is not bad either- Beatles, Stones, Who....
Joanna Newsome's YS - Van Dyke Parks is at least a demiurge!

Incidentally, jwhite, your post is a lovely segue to the FURTHER request that I was going to ask our tour guide, which was -- would she be willing to coordinate the first annual forum gathering!
I have had my own little gatherings of IFMers here in the Southeast US, but we didn't invite the world, because one needs months of planning for somethign ike that.
EVERY web community I've been a part of has had annual gatherings and while this community is very different, with personalities who, for various reasons, might not wish for a face-a-face connection, I know that there are enough of us who WOULD like that, and who, given enough time to get it together, could scrape up the cash.
I also know that there are various small-group meetings, like Elf ad Journeyman and like Li's forthcoming trip stateside to meet her buddies here. and maybe gala's coordinating a lesture tour for liandra and dandy to talk about ifm, who knows? i woudl hope so.
But those are either topic-specific or smaller, private, relationship-focused things.
I'm talking about taking a vacation with you guys. Hanging out for a week somewhere that most of us have never been and would like to go.

It's good that there are all sorts of stars in the firmament. Some times you feel like vanilla, sometimes chocolate- and sometimes, dark, dark chocolate so intense you can't differentiate the bitter from the sweet.
So, glorious fuckups, eh? May I present, for your consideration:
one fuckup too far - Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers, LAMF. RIP,
DeeDee, but this is the definitive Chinese Rocks
right up to the line, then step back - Iggy Pop, Raw Power or Fun House or
Louie Louie on Metallic KO
there's still time... - Paul Westerberg
Of course there are others, and don't mean to imply TVZ is less than my three- these were the ones that jumped to mind as readind Cal's post.

No offense taken. I think that, short of Celine Dion, there is nothing without some worth. And I would politely hold my nose (and my comments) about the Canadienne. (And, folks, that's supposed to be funny- no flame wars with fans of Ms. Dion desired.)

I've just discovered the music of Sufjan Stevens, a man who has succeeded where so many others have failed by managing to make the banjo a cool instrument.
This is a live version of "Casimir Pulaski Day", his best song in my humble opinion. Don't be put off by the shocking opening lyric, this really is an achingly gorgeous piece of music.
PS dig those clip-on angel wings!

A little late, perhaps, but Sufjan's Christmas package (5 generous EPs recorded over the last five years) is one of the best efforts in holiday commerce.

I was tempted, but I plumped for "C'mon Feel The Illinois" instead, already one of my favourite-ever albums. Perhaps next year...........
