simple pleasures

life is unpredictable and can throw nasty surprises at you anytime, so...

my new year resolution is to indulge in my favourite simple pleasures as often as i can...

what are your simple pleasures?...

mine include...

-scortching hot baths with candlelight.
-candlelight in general.
-loud music. singing to it even though i am hopeless. sometimes dancing. better at that.
-petting stray dogs. (have a lot in athens)
-drinking coffee and reading alone in outdoor cafes.
-creating with my hands.
-talking.too much.
-travelling and randomly photographing as i walk.
-yoga
-shopping, especially when i have no money

and one thing i haven't done in years and want to this year...painting.

you may have noticed sex is not mentioned. tongue

Re: simple pleasures

Great idea for a thread jessicaxmas.  It's nice to have you amongst us. Here are a couple of mine:

Slipping naked between clean, cool satin bed sheets in a summer's night.

Making a friend laugh.

Warm socks straight off the radiator in winter.

A good pint of beer and a bowl of pie and peas in a Yorkshire Dale's pub at lunchtime after a long mornings hike.

Sitting in a wood at dawn on a summer's morning.

Re: simple pleasures

Life itself is the greatest pleasure of all, but obviously there are certain specifics which vary from one person's experience of life to anothers.  For me they are (and not necessarily in order of importance):

* being up early in the morning and walking - rain, hail or shine,
* riding horses - anywhere,
* eating good food - we have the best food in the world here especially seafood,
* watching people at busy places like bus stations,
* shaving after a week of not shaving - the skin is so soft,
* drawing other people (when they know they're being drawn and when  they don't,
* singing at parties (or anywhere where the whanau gathers) - parties without singing are very boring,
* reading IFM forum posts - fascinating, educating and often intellectually very provocative.

I could go on, but it might become TOO boring.  So that's me for now and thankyou Jessica for the opportunity.  I hope more people post in this thread.

Re: simple pleasures

Scalding hot cups of tea, preferably Twinings Earl Grey. Always imbibed at my own leisure. There is nothing less satisfying than a rushed drink.

Languishing between the sheets in the morning, content in the knowledge that I don't have to get up yet.

Relaxing in front of the compuiter, scalding cup in hand, content in the knowledge I don't need to leave for bed yet.

Happens far too seldom nowadays. Today is no exception. neutral

-A full stomach.
-Finally putting a great idea on paper.
-That look in a fan's eye when you give them an autograph.
-The Aura effect on polariod photos.
-Good tunes, Good brews, Good buddies.
-Knowing that my workout is over for the day.
-The wind before the rain.
-Corgi pups

I could go on.

Re: simple pleasures

I love this forum... I really do. Thanks, Jessica!

– A hot cup of Earl Grey on a cold Saturday morning

– Watching ducks climb onto thin ice, which cracks beneath their modest weight, dropping them two inches back into the pond

– Dancing with my 3-year-old niece

– A cold evening alone with music and a good book

– A relaxing glass or two of Shiraz at night

– Candles in an otherwise dark room on a winter's night

– Laughing so hard with a friend over something stupid that almost sends you into convulsions

– Watching my (now deceased) house rabbit race around a carpeted room

– The dance and crackle of a campfire

– Mom's homemade Christmas cookies

– Snow-covered fields on an absolutely crystal-clear blue-sky winter day

– Slipping naked into an outdoor hot spring for the very first time

– Lightly kissing my lover's neck

Re: simple pleasures

--Walking a good while in good weather

--Listening to thunder during bad weather

--Putting on a loud thunderstorm screensaver before I go to sleep so I can pretend that I'm sleeping through bad weather

--Downloading and burning things to disc that I should have bought (but not feeling terribly guilty about it, since I support the cultural economy by legitimately purchasing tons of OTHER discs throughout the year)

--Sitting with a warm cat in my lap

--Lying in bed up against a warm girlfriend rear end

--Checking in to see who has said something interesting, or who has *blush* done something interesting, at this site

Re: simple pleasures

I just found a simple pleasure... but it's not so simple.

For some reason, I am in my element when I'm doing one of two things:
Research
Creativity

I'll pore through D&D books to make the perfect character for a campaign and then I'll mess with my guitar until I come up with a good note... end then I'll surround it with like minded notes of peace or discontent.

It may not be simple but, by god, it sure is fulfilling.

My simple pleasures involve petting dogs, watching humorous videos (AMV Hell) or just chilling in a warm bath... man I haven't done that in a dog's age.

I also enjoy esoteric and humurous colloquilisms and euphamisms. The more outlandish the better.

Okay Desertgirl, did you cheat and look at my paper? smile  Every single one of those are my simple pleasures also...except for the desert one given I don't live anywhere close to a desert! There are two more I'd add for me:

-taking a nap with my cats
-being enraptured in a glorious symphony to the point that the rest of the world doesn't exist.

Re: simple pleasures

Some of your pleasures aren't really that simple.  And none has mentioned masturbation?

First morning coffee
Sniffing her armpits
A ripe, white peach (hard to find)
Suddenly realising you're early after all
A random text message that isn't asking for something (hi Max!)
Realising you've invented anti-gravity on a day the patent office is offering free, instant application processing
Being hit on (as I remember it, anyway).

Re: simple pleasures

Masturbation is not a simple pleasure. It requires hard work and perserverance... and videos with good quality audio (for me)

Re: simple pleasures

Excellent thread, Jessica!

While it IS true that masturbation hasn't been mentioned yet, my guess is that we kind of assume that one, BUT i DID want to mention, in case I never have, that the REASON I'm here at IFM is because (yes, I did tell you this) I was encouraged this past June to add one pleasure to my life that I'd not yet added. That was this and the rest is history.

er, herstory?

anyway -- wanted to tell Blind_Ryan (and other interested folks) that I think I found a contributor for sonicerotica! We'll see when she gets here and checks everything out, but she does that rare thing well: writing good sex.

xx

Max -- is the forum still accessible to search engines? I've been dropping crumbs for folks eager to find us. . . . (siobhan's version of viral marketing for IFM)

Cats whose ears move around independently of each other, like satellite dishes.
Dogs who can do the 'one ear up, one ear down' thing.
Saying hello to aforementioned dogs whilst they wait outside the shop.
Steam rising off a good cup of tea.
Wrestling with my little boy.
Unexpected courtesy.

As someone else said, I take that as a given. Besides, what with reading this forum and all, who has time to wank? wink

Search your memory and tell me what it's like; it's never ever happened to me.
Well, there was one (straight) guy who approached me in a club back when I was a longhaired college student. Boy was he disappointed when I turned to face him and he saw my beard.

As for my own simple pleasures, I've just indulged in one: Cross country driving. I know most people think it's a pain, but I just love zooming across the country on major highways, watching the scenery flow by like I was striding across the land in ten-league boots.

I'm also inordinately proud of the hot peppers (jalapenos, cayennes, habaneros) I grow in my garden. The truth is, once you plant them the plants are almost impossible to kill; all you have to do is collect the peppers. Nevertheless, I take great joy from that.

Actually, that's kind of a scary thought! I use the same screen name here as in many other places (probably not a wise choice, in retrospect wink ), and while I don't think there's anyone out there Googling my name, I wouldn't be entirely comfortable with them finding some of the things I've written here.

It's not that I have any illusions: I know this is a completely non-private space... it's just that I've been thinking it very unlikely that anyone who knows me would stumble across this forum. Hmmmm....
