Good to know the old girl's spirit lives on.

Old Mother Riley lives on in virtually ever Dame who graces a pantomime stage.  All of the best Dames cite Arthur Lucan as one of their major influences including the late Les Dawson, maybe the best Dame of the last twenty years. Regrettably there has been a trend in recent years for Dames to be played by female impersonators.  This I feel is wrong and contrary to the spirit and tradition of pantomime going back to the 1880s and Dan Leno (generally considered to be the first of the great Dames). Steve Barclay, one of the most highly respected Dames in the business says "I’m a bloke in a frock. It's not a drag act. Admittedly there is an element of camp, but if it's too camp it becomes something else, and not traditional pantomime. I’m a man, but I’m wearing a dress. That's the joke. That's how its been since the days of Drury Lane."  A lot of guys new to playing Dame think "How do I play a woman".  That's  wrong.  You think of the person you are playing.  Not the gender.  Pantomime Dames should be characters.  Not characatures.

As for me now that I've got a taste I want more.  I've played an Ugly Sister and next year I may be auditioning for a more traditional "nice" Dame role.  I have a year to work on her.

Sorry to ramble on.  I tend to do that about  theatre smile.

Probably has something to do with the whole "acting" thing.  I hear it gets it into your blood.
