Wankipedia!

Knowing we have a number of Brits in the crowd here, I was going to ask the forum to define a slang term for me: My family and I are big fans of the BBC (BBC America to us) show Coupling, and one character (Jeff) uses the word "gusset" in several episodes, always in a context that suggests it's naughty slang.

But before I wasted y'all's time on a possibly ignorant question, I decided to go a-Googling. I got my answer, I think -- it apparently it refers to the crotch area of panties, and by linguistic extension, the "girly bits" (as one source put it) within, which is entirely in keeping with the way the word is used in the show -- but in my searching, I also found this delightful list of slang terms for masturbation.

I'm particularly amused by "two-finger taco tango" as a term for female wanking, but one of the male terms will no doubt delight all but one of us here (and frighten that one): "thrashing the Bishop"!  wink

What's your favorite euphemism?

FWIW, my wife and I have always called it "walking the dinosaur," after the Was (Not Was) song... which, of course, has nothing to do with masturbation, but the phrase just sounded like a euphemism to us.

I've grown quite partial to frigging or frigg probably due to it's use in Lost Girls (when I can keep a thought in my head for more than a second I will post in that thread). I absolutly cannot stand the term jilling it just makes me think of girs rubbing themselves with cheap badly scented hair gell.

I fell off my chair laughing (nearly) when I read this, but on second thoughts maybe it's not meant to be funny.  Sorry Cate.  A couple of females of my acquaintance use the male term "jacking off" to describe their "activities".  I think that just because Jack climbed up and down the "bean stalk" the term should not  be reserved for males alone.  And your right Cate - "jilling" does seem to be a somewhat dopey word for something which provides us with so much visual delight here at IFM.  I'm not sure though whether "jacking off" is much better.  Hmmm dunno.

Re: Wankipedia!

Talking about visual delights I haven't seen much of those lately.  I downloaded three vids today, because I had the time to do it and just as well I did, because it took well over an hour and a half to do all three.  This is not the thread for these comments I know - they just came into my head when I was talking earlier.

I like 'frigging' too but it does sound so old-fashioned. I think I first read it many years ago in vintage Victorian porn and I didn't realise that anyone was still using it these days. Another Victorian term was 'to spend' for 'to come'. As far as I know, 'to spend' in a sexual sense has gone extinct.

You will also find liberal use of the verb 'to spend' in its obsolete sexual sense in 'Lost Girls' - but that's because Moore's script is pastiching Victorian pornographic writing.

Thanks to you and to other IFMers who've brought 'Lost Girls' to the attention of those of us who hadn't been familiar with it. I checked it out and it looked so intriguing that I have now ordered my own copy. Cheers.

p.s. The OED does give 'to advance (esp. obliquely) by repeated almost imperceptible movements' under 'edge', which is rather a nice phrase, even if it's not quite what I was looking for.

That is rather a nice phrase, and reminds me that I'm edging towards lunacy, and towards buying a mountain. Thanks for the reminder that, even if the movements are imperceptible, at least one can say that there is progress in edging, to a greater or lesser degree.

I have no idea when it came into being as a word, but wanted to say that I, too, have made a practise of this -- not when alone, but as I've gotten older and only want one orgasm with a partner.

Can anyone hazard a guess as to when the term 'edging' (see the thread on 'Lady Edgers') was first used in its sexual sense?.... A reference would fit very well in something I'm writing set in the mid-80s, but I fear the term didn't exist then.

Would it be too awkward to hint that it's your characters' private, idiosyncratic slang? That way, if your timeframe predates common usage, it doesn't really matter; it's a logical enough use of the word that it's not hard to imagine anyone using it privately at any time.

Just a thought...

BTW, for OED geeks, I recommend not one, but two books by Simon Winchester: The Meaning of Everything, which is a popular history of the OED's creation, and The Professor and the Madman, the much narrower tale of an American murderer, confined in an asylum for the criminally insane in England, who became one of the major individual contributors to the dictionary.

Actually, I recommend anything by Winchester, whose works have never failed to fascinate me, but these two are relevant to the thread (or at least the turn it seems to have taken wink ). If you like audiobooks, be advised that Winchester's a very entertaining reader of his own work.

Re: Wankipedia!

Greek slang is different...doesn't translate...

the romantic version i use means touching myself (one word)
and the dirtier version is actually used as an insult like he/she-who-wanks...

sorry, my contribution stinks smile

Ah. Similar to when someone says, in English, "What were you guys doing here all day, just jerkin' off?"
