Anyone in the US? How was your dinner? What are you grateful for?
I'm making Thanksgiving dinner for the first time tomorrow...I've never done a bird before! Any tips?

In November 2000, I followed Chef Melissa Kelly's direction. Turkey looked fake when it came out of the oven because of the pomegranate juice glaze, which by the way I gave up after trying to squeeze the juice out of 2 pomegranates. I substituted with Grenadine which they use to make a mixed drink. Same stuff but liquid!

I adore thankgsiving... so excited to bring it to my Australian family this year! My favorite dish is greenbean casserole - I love it any which way including greenbean can + mushroom can + fried onion can = casserole, but as an adult I always make it all from scratch.
With the turkey, I was going to dry brine? Which is rubbing salt on it while it's sitting in the fridge waiting to be cooked. And put some baking soda with the salt for extra crispy skin... I'll let you guys know how it goes!
The reason I don't like butterballs is cause they're pre-wet brined, which means they're soaked in salty water pre-sale. I don't like wet brining as it makes the turkey juicy for sure, but less flavorful overall. Still the site looks super helpful! I was suggested this site:

Ed, would love to see a pic of your fake-looking pomegranite turkey! I can't imagine trying to get juice out of a pomegranite by hand, sounds like a nightmare. Isn't grenedine cherry stuff?

Are you taking reservations for different seating's? Count me in! One more tip...about 20 + years ago about 4 or 5 couples went away for the weekend to a beautiful, huge cabin which belonged to one of the couples parents. Typically myself and a couple of other men did most of the cooking at home, but the wives were going to make the "feast" this year at the cabin. There was a lot of wine and liquor flowing whilst the turkey cooked and the rest of the meal prepared.. The turkey was brought out for me to carve. I couldn't get the knife into the turkey! Gulp!
Can anyone guess what went wrong?

I know this is a few days late, but we cooked a "drunken turkey". The night before , we cooked the turkey in the oven with foil for about 1 hour at 425. Put one stick of butter in the turkey, melted one over it, put salt and pepper on it, and three bottles of beer on it. Covered it with foil. Cooked it overnight at about 225 for about 8 hours. Amazing! Pretty much falls off the bone. Just Google "drunken turkey" and you can find a bunch of recipes. Also served stuffing, had shrimp, cheese + crackers, riesling wine, etc.
Ed, the pomegranate sounds great. Viva, love the garlic brussel sprouts. Garlic and olive oil gives flavor to so many things...
As for what I'm thankful for... the joy of those around me, laughter that makes my body shake, and moments that one really feels alive. Still thankful, and looking forward to the many experiences in life that bring joy...

Lydia, I never actually thought about the difference, so I looked it up. The only linguistic thing I could find was that grateful means that you appreciate what a person has done for you, and want to express your thanks. I guess it implies that there is someone to direct it to - if one spiritual, I guess that means to the higher power that one believes ultimately brought these things about. On the other hand, thankful means that one is relieved/ pleased with what one hoped for has actually happened. So, to put in context, I have been a big fan of your submissions to IFM, so you could say that I am grateful to you for sharing them with us. And because I enjoy the videos, I am thankful.
