New Forum Design

So, as everyone reading this is in the forum (duh) I think it is safe to say we have all noticed the color pallet changes. In my honest opinion I think it makes the forum feel more generic. Whereas before I felt like I was on the IFM forum, now I feel as if I have just visited generic forum X.

So I think it is safe to say I am not a big fan of the change. The question is: Am I alone in this?

What are your thoughts on the new forum appearance?

Hey guys, yeah I agree with you about the change in design. Fortunately it won't be a permanent thing, it should be back to normal as soon as possible. But for now maybe we should all just wear sunnies while we read the forum... our user base will be the coolest on the internet. Oh wait we already are

Also we dressed up for Halloween! Viva is Gojira and I'm Fionna from Adventure time. Strawberry and Kenji dressed up too, as a vampire and an oktoberfest beer girl.

The forum broke so we had to cobble this one together in a hurry. I don't think we'll return to exactly what we had, but we'll keep tweaking it and see where it goes. Lodge your suggestions and complaints here.

One of the things I always liked about the old forum was that it integrated seamlessly into the overall site design. It didn't feel like going from IFM to the forums - it felt like going to the forum part of IFM.

I liked that too ^ and I also preferred the smaller width of the original forums. Reading large blocks of text horizontally is more difficult than reading vertically in limited columns, as we are more used to in books. Those columns were more comfortable. This color scheme - white white on light blue with white - is painful on the eyes.

Hi, Richard, in the old fórum there was a button, called "HOME", like at ISM fórum actually, to go, or return to the IFM main page.

It feels very "default forum setup" to me, although it is generally accepted that dark text on light background is easier to read. But I think that getting it to work on the forums would require a full site redesign or else the forums will feel like an external site.

As for the button, the previous forums retained the IFM banner at the top of the screen, and clicking on it returned you to the main site. This is something not enough forums do, actually - a lot of sites once you go to the forums have no way to get back to the main site. I've never liked it, as again, it makes the forums feel divorced from the main site, as opposed to feeling like a continuation of it.

Also, everybody's Halloween costumes are lovely. Who gets to do the shoot with David? I'm rooting for Viva.

Yeah that back-to-ifm button was essential for my daily 1000's of clicks back and forth between forum and site. This is looking like a decent compromise now though!

Looks like the new "temporary" forum design might just be permanent? I've been away for a while, and reading the posts it looks like the new forum has been temporary for several months - or maybe I'm just not reading the dates correctly. I do appreciate the ability to go back to the IFM Home page by clicking on the header of a forum page.

Another thing - it seems to me there's much less participation in the forums than there was in the past. I hope that's temporary too. I used to enjoy browsing the forums, and I learned a lot there, about the contributors, the contributions themselves (past and present). Since I've rejoined, I've appreciated Viva's and Devotchka's contributions to the forum - and I'm sure there are others I'm forgetting as I write.

Harcos - join your mournful swan song with mine and let us sing together. I too bemoan the lack of participation in the forum. There's a handful of thoughtful goodies like yourself and a few others of us (you know who you are!) who are great to have around, but yes, we need more contributors coming down for a chat. Maybe we could incentivize... free cookies and butt plugs if you stop by the forum for Deep Sex Thoughts with Viva and Harcos.

As far as the forum design goes, it went down like this, about a week or two ago the forum went all super basic on us without even those stormy clouds at the top, and folks was all, "wat." But then it came around to its current and stable incarnation, which is almost exactly the same as the old one as far as I can tell, except the buttons are rounded, the writing space is slightly wider and the background color is white. All in all for me, an acceptable change, and this is coming from someone who hasn't updated her phone since iOS5.
