I'm sorry to post this. I'm sorry it exists. CNN's revolting coverage of what is commonly known as the Steubanville rape case has been making the rounds of the social and news media over the past week. I am sure you have all read about the backlash, but in case you haven't or in case you haven't seen mention of this at all, I think it's important to watch this CNN video report.
If you often hear the term "rape culture" or "rape apologism" thrown around, but maybe don't understand, concretely, what that actually means, then you, especially need to watch this. And let's talk about it.

Here is a followup blog post which I found really important to think about as well.

The media circus. This is something I have difficulty understanding, when did the world ok everyone to have an equal opinion about a horrific event in the lives of these children?
I've read blog after blog, from the down right hideous - people who call for a 'dumb sluts registry' (I will not link, cause that shit-head does not deserve attention for being such an ass to Henry Rollins pointing out that the only life-time victim is the girl herself. Henry Rollins, thankyou for bring some sense into the world but seriously wtf, henry, what connection do you have to this case? In light of the over-whelming opposition to the victim, I am glad to have you on side but seriously, wtf?
But if you want to show your support to the victim, as I'm sure she needs, here is a way you can do it.

holy fuck.
Re Henry Rollins, I think his connection is not with the case but with the dialogue around the case and I think he has every right and also some responsibility as a righteous social commentator to speak out against something he sees as totally shit. We especially need dudes on board and we need them to be vocal and intelligent and thoughtful if we're gonna kick rape culture up the arse because it's mostly dudes who rape and dudes who rape unfortunately are kinda unlikely to pay any reverence to the voice of the gender they're raping. So I'm all for Henry's words on this matter, but I'm usually all for Henry full stop so I'm maybe a bit biased. Henry for the world. John Laws for the sewer.

mygodtheywerehavingagoodtimewithyou.
In my world, he'd have his eyes out for that.
I wonder what her reasoning was, for going on his show? He is a notorious bastard shockjock, isn't he?

Can someone please restore my faith in humanity, and tell me that John Laws' sponsors pulled him off the air? PLEASE?
I mean SERIOUSLY on what planet is that even remotely acceptable?
And as far as CNN goes, I think they have stopped being news, and are trying to become TMZ light.... So that horrid clip was almost par for the course.... How else are they gonna get views?

I've been listening to NPR's meta-media analysis podcast lately, "On the Media"... recommend checking it out. Listening to smart people talk about what's going on in the broader media and how the patterns are repeated or not, facts smashed or not, emotions tugged one way on this channel, another way on the other - it's way better than actual news.
