teacher teacher!

I'm feeling really warm and fuzzy about BishUK today, a site that promotes sexual education for young people without pretending they're not young people. I love the voice of the author of the site - at once gentle, understanding, and confidently knowledgeable, he reminds me of the lady in the back of the library when I was a confused too-smart too-dumb kid - the lady who always had time to ask me questions or answer mine once she got me talking, the lady who seemed to know everything but never made me feel stupid.

I think it is a real challenge for adults to talk to children, teens, and adolescents without being either condescending or too on-the-level. I think that BishUK treads that fine line really well, addressing sexuality with the no-nonsense educational tone of, say, a book report. I think this is the way these things should be addressed in every school.

Check out this article, 50 Shades of Sex-Ed, a review of 50 Shades from a sex-ed POV. I especially like the non-judgmental way he approaches the inconsistencies in the book, but my favorite part is the study questions and essay topics at the end!

I wish this had been part of my normal english classes, woven in between questions about foreshadowing and morality:

* Why are sex scenes in fiction not like real life? Would it be better if the sex scenes were realistic?

So good!

Re: teacher teacher!

LOVE THE BISH site! Yep, it talks to and not down to young people. So good, I love the addition of the graphs and diagrams in the how-to part.

Oh and the critical thinking part... So important.  That's the sad thing about education these days (i've seen it change in uni too). All courses encouraging critical thinking seem to have been dropped, and mindless fact repetition encouraged. I like how it applies the questions to the book, and encourages people to rate their own relationships, if they hadn't been drawn into those parts of the site already. Very clever and forward thinking stuff

So you might as well dance."
