san francisco is really rockin!

Hoorah for san francisco!

Today on Tiny Nibbles was a goldmine of awesome sex news, foremost (for me) that of a momentous occasion in San Francisco, where the people have voted and the city decided to fund sex-reassignment surgery for transsexual people without health care, as part of California's effort towards a universal health allowance for all residents. Amazing news! What an amazing precedent! The idea of sex-change surgery being honored as a vital action for the health of a transsexual person born into the wrong body, taking it out of the cosmetic surgery category, is a huge step forward in acknowledging the existence of transsexuality and the necessity of caring for those members of our communities who struggle with gender issues.

Also, spending lots of money to put them in high schools, nightclubs, and office buildings, San Francisco is "blanketing the city with condoms." So cool.

San Fran is the place to be. I remember when New York had a similiar condom giveaway, and frankly when a city does something like that well, it just builds a great community and they are such a cool keepsake.

Question, that seems relevant here- do drag queens consider themselves as transvestites or trans-sexuals? In season 2 of rupaul's drag race untucked, there are appeared to be a hierachiry associated with being a CISmale and identifying with one's persona as a character. One of the constants almost seemed to be belittle by the other contestants when they thought she lived life as a woman also. There was a bit of back-tracking, but this is one element of the show that has really surprised me, I know that being a drag queen is about being an entertainer but I thought that some of the ladies might also have lived life as a woman. Not so it seems.

Re: san francisco is really rockin!

I think drag is more about fashion, art, and theatre than actually about gender reassignment, along the lines of men wearing tights to do Shakespeare. It says something about the puritanism/sexualization of our society that we jump to conclusions when boys put on dresses - as far as I'm concerned, it's a totally natural extension of any curious and mildly theatrical personality, to emulate other walks of life, including other genders. After that, the exaggerated female aesthetic has been so well jammed into our conscious and subconscious mind, I think it's rather surprising that we don't all wear wigs and padded bras.
