The Nu Project

This popped up in my Facebook news feed today and thought it might be of interest over here. A Minneapolis-based photographer has lunched the Nu Project a series of "honest nudes of normal women from all over the world".

Holly brave. I'm not sure I could contribute to something like that. Naked on Facebook is a tough place to imagine being.

My feelings on the project are mixed. The images are a refreshing change from airbrushed magazine covers, they are a good conversion starter. But the women don't get get paid (maybe that's the difference between making "art" and making "erotica"?) and the photographer has chosen a definition of "normal" that seems pretty...well narrow.

Dunno. Check it out. Admittedly, there is one of a women in her kitchen where you can see a jar of peanut butter in the cupboard that I love. But maybe not at work? There are lots of nude women.

Re: The Nu Project

That's really nice! Not as good as ISM though, the people on his site are still the subjects of his interpretation and style. I think normal isn't a good word to describe diversity (it implies less than)  and as people are doing this for him for free it would be cool if he was on there naked too. Having got that bit of knit picking out the way smile (those are constructive criticisms because I like his work). I've seen a few of these shots on the blog, 'sex is not the enemy' and I think they're cool and very mentally healing. and for me most of them are hot, while for many I just feel like I wanna hug them for being involved, especially the very old lady.

Re: The Nu Project

The first thing I noticed is how super white everyone is! even in the south american ones most everyone is very light skinned. I'm not usually this sensitive to perceived lack of diversity but this really stood out in a project which is about "normal" women. Some pretty shots here and I love the general idea, but yeah the vocabulary of mission statement seems a little off the mark.

thanks for sharing jane, awesome find!
