I have set up a very simple webpage to record my eye diary.
The website was generated using antique html coding and is designed with NO fancy bells or whistles. Navigation is through the links or your "Back" Button.
The website does contain all of the info in a file I have kept called NewDiary and that file can also be
downloaded from a link on the website.
The webpages are in parallel form, one half is formatted for the Vision Impaired, and all that info is duplicated on the other half but in standard formatting for people who can see.
I plan to update the webpages at least weekly, and the page called Index 02 is in reverse chronologic order so that the most recent page is at the top of the list.
The replacement website and pages can be located right here at My Eyes if interested.
There are some very bizarre observations and a warning of sorts so that you won't make the same mistakes I did and overlook something crucial.
Sight is a precious commodity, and you only realize that once yours starts to fail.

A guy at work just sent me a link to the Globe and Mail
for an article on AMD and the new drugs being used.
If anyone knows anyone who might need to know this,
then this is the Globe & Mail link to the article.

Ashmedi,
I really feel for you and can only imagine your sense of despair. I see from your diary update that you were beginning to suspect this to be the case, but I suppose with the deterioration being more gradual this time it must have been difficult to be sure.
(It sounds like the medical profession in Canada is on a par with the UK when it comes to budgets. It really is a travesty that required medical attention is withheld or delayed on the basis of the ridiculous bureaucracy and monetary constraints that are placed on each health authority. I mean what price can you place on a person's eyesight for goodness' sake .... I'm sorry to go on, but it just makes me so angry, so I can only guess how it must make you feel).
Try to keep smiling Ashmedi. I truly do hope and pray that everything goes well for you.
Take care my friend.
Speak again soon - hopefully with better news.
JF
P.S. A plea to anyone reading this post .... Please make the time to read Ashmedi's diary (I know many of you already have) and please take heed of his advice that if you suspect even the slightest defect developing with your eyesight, to get it checked out without delay. We really do take our eyesight for granted when everything appears to be okay, but do we truly appreciate what a precious gift our eyesight really is? I know Ashmedi does!

Thanks JF.
The article said 2 million Canadians have AMD, I think that is about 7% of the population.
That is a scary number and may grow as the population ages.
I hope people read the diary just for the awareness and scare factor if nothing else, but I can't make them. You know what they say "You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink".
That's the Cdn version, substitute your own words for your region of the world.

All info updated to Oct 16th.
Bought a new large screen HDTV to replace the old
outdated small set. I can actually see the characters faces now and can read some of the print.

Just found out earlier today that my 3rd PDT laser treatment will happen Thurs 1:00 PM DST and I will be off the computer probably for 48 hours.
It's lucky I called them last week and again this week because the paperwork got misplaced and apparently the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing.

I don't quite feel all of your pain, but I do have absolutely abysmal eyesight, that requires me to go to the doctor once or twice a year to make sure my retinas haven't detached.
Sight truly is a precious thing.

It sounds like your health service is as disorganised as ours Ashmedi. Good luck for tomorrow mate.

It's "comforting" to know that medical care is at the same level of "efficiency" all over the Western world.
Best of luck, Ashmedi!

Thanks all, I expect this treatment to leve me with very poor vision in the right for about 4 days till the eye gets over the shock of 83 seconds of intense bright white light.
After the eye is "sealed" again and is no longer seeping they are going to try a drug called Avastin. They say that they have had some success with it, and "success" is defined as it hopefully will prevent a reoccurence and ""may"" improve the eye. Avastin is injected right into the eye, 3 times 2 weeks apart. It is the cheapest of the 2 drugs available and neither is covered by any insurance. Avastin will set me back $750 Cdn. The other drug Macugen is administered evry 6 weeks for up to 2 years and treatment could be as little as 1 treatment or the full 18 approx. Macugen could cost from $1,750 (1) to approx $31,500 (18).
Macugen is outside my limit unless I won a lottery.
Gavinrad: I work with a girl who had detached retinas and her description was very scary, I can only imagine what it would be like. Good luck to you.
The health system would appear to have some flaws and it is too bad those problems are so widespread. However there are many places on this earth where there is no help at all and in one of those places I am sure I would have been fed to the fishes as soon as I became a liability.
I may be able to browse the forums since I can at least see the monitor in the dark as long as I can see where the mouse is to be able to click it but the keyboard and basement are fluorescent lit and they will be off so typing anything will be more hassle than it's worth.
Ciao, and thanks again.

Updated today with entries for Oct 23rd and Nov 3rd.
The doc file will contain an animation which will not play inside the full diary, it only works in the webpage view.
The animation is the flashing haloes and this is as close as I can come to realism.
