to condom or not to condom

For those who don't know, in November California will be voting on Measure B, a "safer sex" ballot which, if passed, will require adult entertainment stars to wear condoms during sex in films shot and produced in Los Angeles. Actually since March this year, it is already required, but only for productions securing a city permit - not yet those shot in studio.

Personally, I like the idea of condoms used in pornography - I believe that we shouldn't have to rely on gonzo naked-dick-in-vag shots to elicitic erotic response - but not under legal duress. Stoya talks about it here, with her typically thrilling intellectual candor, explaining the rigorous procedures for STI testing and test maintenance in the adult industry. I was really interested to learn that the community hasn't sustained a single case of HIV in the last 8 years.

The recent syphilis shut-down, which occurred when performer Mr. Marcus admitted to lying about a positive test result is likely to add to concern about the potential for STIs to spread among performers despite the care taken to prevent them. However from reading Stoya's coverage on the topic it seems that strictures have changed since the syphilis incident, becoming more focused on digital confirmation of test results as opposed to paper copies which can be forged or smudged.

Anyway, the best part of all of this is reading about Stoya's day on a shoot with James Deen, so don't miss that link.

Re: to condom or not to condom

I have a friend in Norway who said if a couple go to a doctor for an STi test together they both get the results together in writing for each other to see in a joint  results  appointment. I think perhaps a good move woud be to have a minimum test requirement (blood, urine and swob) and a requirement that an STi report is given to you and a representative of the person hiring you in the same appointment or emailed to the person hiring you? The doctor would need written confirmation that your hiree had recieved the report before filming could start. Bit like a surveyers report to a mortgage company smile Mortgages are done that way because it's professional and so is this. That way I think everyone gets professional surety and the best protection.

It's nice that the welfare of people in porn in Californis is being considered, if compulsory condoms are ill considered they could take that concern and use it to create informed effective legislation. If it's not concern but right wing porn bashing then the well considered legislation can be sold to right wing voters by using examples of right wing parents who's kids are involved in porn and  who obviously can't force they're kids to stop so want them protected.

Re: to condom or not to condom

i like the idea of condoms in my porn, i'm a big fan of them of using them in real-life. however, i think an industry professional has the right to choose whether or not to use condoms. they can get uncomfortable and can lead to tearing of the foreskin (real-life experience x 2)

in porn where the focus is apparently amateur and apparently reflective of real-life experience, i'd love to see more of it. in the kabuki porn theatre, i don't mind what they do as long as everyone is into it.
