In february this year, nortorious babe punk band, Pussy Riot performed a 'punk prayer' in Moscow's largest church to the Virgin Mary, protector of Russia, calling to 'rid us of Putin'. The performance lasted 40 seconds and the group openly accuse the Russian leadership of infringing on the rights of women and the gay and lesbian community.

Five members pf Pussy Riot were arrested at the beginning of March and three members of the band have been charged with 'hooliganism' and face up to 7 years in prison if found guilty. Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, 23; Maria Alekhina, 24; and Yekaterina Samutsevich, 29, of Pussy riot have been held in custody for five months already and prosecutors have called for 3 year prison sentences.

The Moscow judge wrapped up the trial on Wednesday and will issue a verdict on August 17th. The constitution of the Russian Federation promises 'guaranteed freedom of literary, artistic, scientific, technical and other types of creative activity' and although Pussy Riot have apologised to the Ordodox Christians who feel slandered by the performance, their trial is reminiscent of the Soviet era in restricting said freedoms due to political criticism.
