They were the best offer I had

Love this passage from Sex is not the enemy

Sex is not the enemy wrote:

The whole “men initiate, women wait around” plan is bullshit. Newsflash: men who are shy, insecure, or afraid of rejection exist. They are not bad people. Many of them make awesome boyfriends. It’s also fucked to tell women that their sole recourse, if they want to date a dude, is to look pretty in his general direction. Instead of taking away women’s power and making men fit a role that they may not be comfortable with, why don’t we let people who like initiating initiate and people who don’t like initiating not initiate?

When women are free to initiate with men without negative judgment, just like Sapphic women do, for women who like to initiate it could change their whole life.

Re: They were the best offer I had

I think women are free to do so - at least in my culture (not anything broad, just the world I've observed personally) women aren't really afraid to take initiative. At least, I feel that we often don't have much choice! Many of the decent, intelligent men I am interested in will wait for me to take the initiative out of respect, often interspersing casual friendship with "looking pretty in my general direction" until I indicate one way or the other what it is that I'm looking for. That or, they're not thinking about me like that at all until I make myself impossible to not think about.

I think I've never been pursued, actually. Or else I've not noticed if someone was pursuing me. Maybe I never gave anyone the chance, really.

Did we already have the women-proposing-marriage-to-men conversation? I like how intensely controversial the concept seems to be, still, in this day and age.

Re: They were the best offer I had

If I'd left it up to my guy I wouldn't be with him today - I invited him to my place for dinner and a warm shower (plus friend), I made the first sexual move.  And I asked him to marry me (albeit jokingly) pretty early on in the piece.. and wrote to him at length when he went away.  It was the necessary thing to do, him being a shy guy and generally (self confessed) pretty useless at seeing and acting on what was right in front of his eyes.  It was a new role for me too, to pursue, but I wanted him, with very good reason!

I like it.  I like it a lot. I like it a lot and then sometimes not.
