I'm a babe of the 70's and love the glam rock era. For me, The Sweet were head and shoulders above anyone else in the charts in those days and I still listen to their stuff in my car on a regular basis. I also play Bowie's Ziggy Stardust stuff. My favourite recent album is called Cyclorama by Styx which is absolutely brilliant, especially the track "Kiss your ass goodbye".
Cheers. Dynamo.

"Ziggy Stardust" era Bowie - great stuff Dynamo! (I came in on "Hunky Dory" from 1971 and loved it and pretty much everything he released in the 70's (unfortunately, much of his later 80's and 90's output left me cold). Still, always an innovator and not afraid to challenge his fans' loyalties by changing a successful formula - often with his popularity at a peak at the time.
Styx I saw last year on their first UK tour in around 25 years and must say that it was one of the best gigs I have ever witnessed (and I've been to hundreds over the years!). They did say they would tour the UK again and not leave it so long this time! (2007 is pencilled in I understand) and yes I agree, "Cyclorama" is arguably their best and most consistent album ... possibly since the heady days of "Pieces of Eight" way back in 1978!
If you're interested in the melodic rock scene, "Journey" are touring the UK again in March 2007 following on from their gigs earlier this year. Typical, I waited over 25 years to see them play live in the UK and then, like waiting for buses, two come along in quick succession! - not that I'm complaining though
Pleased you are here Dynamo

Yeah I saw Styx in 81 on their Paradise Theatre tour at Wembley Arena and I still reckon its the best gig I ever saw, and I'm like you, I've seen some bloody good bands in my time. Its nice to know that I'm not the only person in the world who's heard Cyclorama. I hope your right that they are lining up a gig in 2007. I'll deffo go to that. Tommy Shaw is da man.
I'm with you in the Bowie field too. He never quite hit the heights he reached in the early 70's but I guess everyone has to peak at some point.
I think you'd like a night out in Hartlepool cos every pub and club plays Don't Stop Believing ad infinitum.

Thought you might appreciate these - oh and for anyone wondering who Tommy Shaw is - he's the blonde guy singing on these two tracks:

Enjoy!

What the hell was I onabout when I wrote that drivel? Hehehe. Naa, seriously. There is one other band that has really wetted my appetite recently. I have got to admit that the majority of bands that have come to the fore in the last 10 to 15 years have left me pretty cold, although I won't deny that there have still been lotsa great songs released in that time period, but for me, one band stands head and shoulders above the majority of the drivel being churned out at the mo.
And that band is........? Well I'm sure JF and Elf will be very happy to hear that its a group of Yorkshire lads from Leeds. Of course its The Kaiser Chiefs. Their debut album, Employment, is bloody excellent and contains at least five songs that could go on to be regarded as classics.
As for the bits about Ewan McColl, anyone called Ewan is ok in my book.
Right, I'm off to find some Russ Ballard stuff on You Tube.

Burlesque should know about a Swedish band called Drain, or Drain STH.
They broke up a while ago, but their influence lives on through the internet. I believe that this was the only all female metal band that ever got it right musically.
(I thought that would rattle a sabre or two.)
It's not screechy, too low, too high, too girly, too blokey or even hard on the ears (or eyes). This was the way metal was ment to sound, should the fairer sex decide to pick up an axe and rock out.

I'm not very familiar with Drain, probably because Swedish metal bands are a dime a dozen, female or otherwise (young people are always so angry, aren't they?). There is another Swedish rock band, a tad on the hard side, called Sahara Hotnights, also all-female as I recall and with a bit of a following abroad.

What's to feel guilty about!? I know they used to have a swine of a manager, but they don't anymore as far as I know, and besides they are cool! I refuse to to be ashamed! I even watched the Eurovision Song Contest a few years back because they were in it.

Aren't they just delicious? I actually rather enjoy their singing in Russian, even though I haven't a clue as to what they're saying--I much prefer the Russian version of "Ya Soshla Su Ma" to the clunkier English version "All the Things She Said". I also love their version of "How Soon Is Now?" (I quite love Morrissey as well). I still need to buy their recent album. I have the first in both its original release version, purchased at a hole in the wall Russian store in Brooklyn, and the more produced and shiny later release, containing the aforementioned cover.
In junior high, I was teased mercilessly for my love of Duran Duran--but I will unabashedly continue to admit my love, along with my excitement over getting to see them in November! This will be my first time seeing all five of the original band, so I am very much looking forward to it.
I am also a helplessly die-hard a-ha fan--any others out there? Morten Harket was the first man to ever turn me on--his voice alone still has the capacity to, excuse my bluntness, make me wet .

A-ha .... and Morten Harket's voice in particular - great stuff! Can't say his voice "makes me wet" (well, being male it wouldn't I suppose ), but it does have the capacity to make the hair on my neck stand up! - Always the measure of good music and/or a great performer IMHO

Whilst on the subject of vocalists who can make the hairs on the neck stand up .... I've always been quite partial to the occasional musical and the first one I ever saw "live" was Jesus Christ Superstar. (I also loved the 1973 movie version with Ted Neely as Jesus).
I'd never thought I'd hear a better rendition of "Gethsemane" than Neeley's, (I've certainly heard many "more famous" and supposedly "great" singers absolutely murder the song or at best "bottle out" of the high notes)
All this changed when a certain young Welshman named Steve Balsamo starred as Jesus in the 1996 stage version. This guy has the most amazing vocal ability and the emotion he shows when performing the song is almost palpable. In fact, I recall a comment a few years ago, from Andrew Lloyd Webber himself, along the lines of Steve Balsamo having the best male voice he had ever heard. (Apparently there is a clip somewhere of Lloyd Webber in the audience at a show where Balsamo had just performed Gethsemane and, as the song ended, the camera switched to Lloyd Webber applauding wildly with tears flowing!)
Here's a Youtube clip of Steve perfoming Gethsemane on a Dutch TV extravanganza in 2004. (Even if musicals are not your thing - still check this video out for vocal ability and sheer emotion):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e4vdIkYIQJA
Steve went on to record an excellent solo album in 2002 in a pop-rock vein (visit www.stevebalsamo.com) and now fronts a group called The Storys (www.thestorys.co.uk), who have recently released their debut album and have just supported Elton John on his recent tour. (Both solo and group ventures are totally different to his theatrical career, but apparently it was never his intention to remain in musical theatre).
Enjoy

It happens to be the story of my life too, WW, but I'm confused as to where the nut crushing business enters into it in this particular case. Oh, call me an insensitive bastard. Most people do, and I'm starting to like it. It's certainly better than "nerdy twit", if slightly lower on the scale than "that sexy, hot, delectable man".

Don't get me wrong--I appreciate Morten's voice for completely non-sexual reasons as well . There's something about it, the current that runs just beneath it as he sings, that is quite enthralling--he lends an emotional and unearthly beauty to his singing that I think makes a-ha's music (which I do love for its own sake) more nuanced and fulfilling than that of others in their genre. Most people may see them as just another pop band (classified as a one hit wonder here in the states, sadly), but his voice in particular is shamefully underappreciated. There are few things like it--it is its own experience.
Also, musicals have never been my thing, but that performance clip you posted DID give me goosebumps. Wow! Thank you so much for sharing that.
And yes, West Wind, I was aware that the whole lesbian thing was a publicity ploy . Actually, I never believed it from the beginning--mainly because they were auditioned and put together by a production team as opposed to a duo that happened organically over time. But still, I enjoy their music and their voices--they can sing better than a lot of American pop cuties. Plus, they're immensely enjoyable to look at, how pretty they are!

OMG. The Sweet? I LOVE those guys! I have many happy memories of sitting in the car on cross-country trips, my family and I singing our lungs out to "Fox On The Run" and of course, "Peppermint Twist". I only recently learned to appreciate and embrace the love that is "Love Is Like Oxygen". Now it's by far my favourite Sweet song, above all others. No exceptions.

Wouldn't you know it -- my first post to a site dedicated to beautiful women in profoundly vulnerable, rare, and graceful states is a thread about music; and in my case, music written by or performed by some pretty ugly brutes. Oh well, I love contrasts. This is all so very post-modern.
Over the last couple-three days I've spun the following:
• Mujician: There's No Going Back Now
• Xenakis: Metastasis
• Evanescence: Sweet Sacrifice
• Cream: Royal Albert Hall reunion concert (DVD)
• Stockhausen: Gesang der Junglinge
Plus, a local jazz radio station has been doing a lot of Coltrane (his 80th was celebrated in September), so I've dutifully been tuned there lots lately.
You all make for a loquacious and articulate crowd. Whenever I drop into the forum, here, I feel quite a breeze!
