Okay, by now you guys probably know that a woman (Michigan state rep Lisa Brown) was banned from the House floor for saying vagina the other day - it's a bit tongue in cheek as she was actually, they say, banned for comparing this anti-abortion legislation to rape by saying, "No means no." - but a) that's bullshit and b) who cares? She was banned because she spoke out of place - out of her woman's place.

Anyway here's a funny cartoon about the whole thing.

Isn't it unconstitutional to ban someone for life LIFE! (60 years?) from a democratic forum for on incident of words? or one word? I think it's appalling. One more reason to only visit Newyork and not the rest of the USA.

Oh boy, if we judges all countries by their politics, there wouldn't be anywhere left to go. New York is alright, but if you go to the US and miss each coast, the mountains, the redwood forests, the canyons in arizona, the salt flats, the prairies, the lakes, music, gumbo inflatable alligators real alligators.. get it? New York is just a sprinkle on a delicious ice cream cone.

I'm only jokingish. The world is full of people who happen to live in countries. And if you wanna see them you either have to visit or they come and stay with you.

That was the only joking part, the ish part referrs to formal non personal ties like boycotting business investment and holidays. right through to my own government applying trade sanctions. No way would I go to a place where a luxury hotel sits right near people in terrible and unecessary poverty. (Some parts of Tunisia) and I've turned down an invitation to stay with a work mates family next time he goes back to Africa to visit. Because in the country he comes from gay people are often killed, which he isn't to worried about, and if I expressed my true opinion there I might be perminantly injured or killed myself.

So yeah people in places with unacceptable politics have to know that those things decrease the likelihood of visiting being pleasant (and not everyone is after a thrill seeking dangerous adventure), or where they live being unattractive for ethical investment, and no part of the USA is immune from that. People are diverse, and cultures and people are complex, and lots of cultures share common ground, but where something is unacceptable to you it's not unreasonable to exercise your choice where we have it, and give preference to things you support and boycott things you disagree with, wether it's not buying sweatshop produced clothes or buying organic food, or not holidaying in a place where just out of site people endure a living hell ( Las vagas). So yeah I'd visit a friend in Tennessee or go to a conference if it had to be there, but not go there as a tourist for a relaxing hotel holiday when i could go to Canada and Quebec instead.

Actually my bank balance has currently bycoted those places as well But for most people when we have the money either for investment or holidays, how ethically fucked up a place is has a strong bearing on how much money it attracts.
