Great job Elfman, I watched it last night after showing my "better half" your Yorkshire Airways video (yes, she's a "Yorkshire lass" as well!)-- we're still laughing at that one! lol

I loved the images that accompanied the superb Kate Rusby song (from her "Lights" CD if I'm not mistaken) -- Sadly, a bygone age sad. The images you've chosen work perfectly with the song -- very moving! (In fact I've got it playing in the background at the moment and will nip downstairs in a sec. to see which colliery brass band is playing on the song)

I've never tried anything using Windows Movie Maker, but I think you have inspired me to have a go myself........That really could spell disaster given my limited PC skills! lol - So if you don't see me posting for a while you'll know that my attempts went horribly wrong! roll

Thanks for the inspiration mate smile

Re: Currently listening to thread

I've got to share my new discovery, Dan Reeder. He's actually primarily a painter (born in Louisiana, now living in Germany with his German wife, whom he met at art school in California), but in his "spare time" he builds his own instruments (!) and records his own quirky folksongs. He sent his first, homemade, CD to John Prine, who loved it and signed Reeder to his label. I first heard about him from this story on NPR's Weekend Edition broadcast, and immediately ordered his CDs from this cool site where you can find a wide range of the (often offbeat) music featured on NPR programs.

He's got a cool, reedy-sounding voice and an amusingly oddball take on the world. And hey, he's even thematically relevant to this site: The bio posted at his website says: "Dan likes to think about, and have, sex ('Pussy Titty'; 'Pussy Heaven'--for the son of a minister, he’s got quite a mouth on him)."

Here's a snatch (pun intended) from the tune I'm listening to right now:

Whaddaya want?
I want food and pussy.
How come?
It's just the way God made me.
Is it alright?
I guess it must be OK.
Hoo bop bop bop,
Shang a lang a lang lang.

How could you not love that, eh? wink

Just so you'll know it's not all about pussy, here's a video of a nongynecological tune.

Thanks for posting the JB pics - very thoughtful smile

Jeff really was an awesome talent that the world lost just as he was starting to receive critical acclaim.

His potential, judging by the one full studio album ("Grace") was limitless!

The posthumous release of the demos that were to be the basis of his second album (released as "Sketches from: My Sweetheart the Drunk") and the myriad of legal and bootleg live CDs that have surfaced, only add to the sense of loss sad

I'm off now to reminisce at what might have been ... (haven't listened to "Sketches..." for a while) .... might need the tissues!...:(

Thanks again Bish

Yes, Your Eminence -- so thoughtful of you. I enjoyed looking at these and I, too, am going to put on some of his music -- it's that kind of lovely autumn mid-afternoon when one can indulge in nostalgia and a bit of grief and not feel too too worried about going over the edge. thanks again.

Yes I quite agree - it must be something in the genes!

- Jeff used to get tired of people comparing him with his father and shouting requests at his gigs for him to "do a Tim Buckley song" smile

On a serious note though - it is absolutely tragic that both father and son died so very young - at least we have the consolation of the legacy of their wonderful music. smile

Re: Currently listening to thread

I've rediscovered a song that I haven't heard since childhood but which has haunted me for the years and years since, and only yesterday did my brain, which is often slow on the uptake, decide to look for it on iTunes.  My father had an 8-track mix tape that he used to play in the car (a gigantic white Ford LTD with a green top and green vinyl bench seats... ah, I loved that car), and one song on there was a particular favorite, though I remember it as being much more rock and roll than it actually is.

The song?  "Life Story" by Barbra Streisand.  I hadn't a clue that it was her until I googled the lyrics and, lo and behold.  Cheesy and synthesized though it is, I have to say that I do quite love it.

For me - one band and one band only - hanson.

I can't help it. I was 13, impressionable, and they were so very, very happy! I still love 'em. I met my friends through them, I learned to use a computer because of them, and I still enjoy their music just as much as I did when they first came out.

Ahh, the "guilty pleasures" thread!

My family did the Hanson thing when my daughter was a preteen (Spice Girls, too, G*d help us!). I actually have a the Hanson Christmas album (don't look at me like that; I also have the Jethro Tull Christmas album!).

Hmmmm, bop, indeed! smile

Right at this moment, I'm listening to the Dixie Chicks' first album. At one time I might have called that a guilty pleasure -- I'm not a big country fan to begin with, and at first they seemed like they were going to be the country Spice Girls -- but I've come to appreciate the music on its own merits. Plus which, anyone with the... ahem... ovaries wink ...  to apologize to the world for our sorry excuse for a president is aces with me.

Bet you're glad she grew out of it before she spent $1500 to follow them across the country last year, hey? *shifty eyes* I WAS YOUNG AND IMPRESSIONABLE (atagetwentyone).
Another of mine is a j-pop duo HiHi Puffy AmiYumi. I had one of their CDs shipped from Japan the other day.

But now that I think about it - is it still a guilty pleasure even if you don't feel guilty for it?

I'm quite sure I spent that much (in 1980s dollars!) on concerts between ages 17 and 21. I used to go to just about every show -- from America to the Clash (or I could say from America to Yes, if you want to get alphabetical [Update: After originally posting this, I realized I could actually get the whole alphabet, since I saw Warren Zevon live during that period!]) -- that came to town, and at one time my entire wardrobe was made up of concert T-shirts (well, and a few pairs of pants, I suppose wink ).

But somehow I managed to avoid following any one band around (coulda been tempted by Linda Ronstadt, though; in those days, she was hot).

Kate wrote:

Japan, huh? OK, here's what you need to remember: On transpacific flights, you have to get up and walk around every couple hours, or you'll get clots. wink wink

BTW, tonight I'm listening to Emerson, Lake, and Palmer. Quite a switch from Dixie Chicks, eh? IIRC, David Letterman used to do an audience-story bit called "My Brush With Fame," and another one called "My Brush With Stupidity." I have a story that's both in one: My mother was an arts critic, and on one occasion I had a chance to meet Aaron Copland, who was (IIRC) guest-conducting a program of his works at the local symphony. The only thing I could come up with to say was to ask him if he liked ELP's versions of his work (Rodeo, Fanfare for the Common Man). He was not amused, and my poor mother was moderately humiliated. Ah, youth, eh?

Oh thanks for that JF.  Good stuff.  That took me back.  Even Tony Bilbow and  "Late Night Line Up"

I've been playing with my Movie Maker again.  Mostly to make sure that I got Dick Gaughan on YouTube.  It was a crime that he wasn't there.  Here he is singing a Ewan MacColl song.  Some of you might spot that part of it used to compose my sig.

What a truly emotive song and made even more so by your excellent work with Movie Maker sir!

Where do you get your images from? Various sites or one in particular? These and the ones you used for Kate Rusby's "My Young Man" video are superb. "What's your secret champ?"

I see you found the answer to your question from your original post as to who presented "Late Night Line Up".

If you haven't already seen it, for more info on that programme see:

Keep those Youtube videos coming, they really are very good indeed smile

Re: Currently listening to thread

Thanks JF.  I just get the photos by Googling "images" for the subject that I am looking for.  I download as many as I can find before I start composing the vid and use the ones that seem the most appropriate at the time.  It can take a long time to find the right images though.  The fathers song vid was about 5 hours work in total.  I'm glad you liked it.  I'll be doing more Dick Gaughan songs in the future.

For those of you confused by JF's comments on "late night line up" I couldn't originally remember the presenter’s name so I asked the question in the post.  It came to me a little later so I edited it.  Thanks for the link.  I had forgoten Joan Bakewell.  I used to think that she was so hot when I was about 16.

Elfman.

Elfman,

I really must thank you sir!

On the strength of your Dick Gaughan Youtube submission alone, yesterday I purchased "Prentice Piece" ( 2CD "best of") and was mightily impressed. So much so that today I went back to the store and bought his latest CD "Lucky For Some", which on first listen (albeit only on my car CD player whilst returning home) is equally impressive.

I cannot claim to have ever really been a fan of "folk music", unless you classify Tim Buckley as "folk". Oh, and seeing The Pogues in 1987/88 supported by the late Kirsty MacColl. (I was vaguely aware that their rendition of "Dirty Ol' Town" was a cover of a Ewan MacColl song, who I knew to be Kirsty's father, and also being aware that Roberta Flack's "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" was also a Ewan MacColl cover). Pretty limited knowledge I would say, especially when compared to my extensive collection and knowledge of other genres (rock, soul, theatrical, classical etc. etc.)

(I really would be quite "well off" if my tastes in music were narrower!)

I think a lot has to do with the lack of exposure the folk genre gets in the media. However, that does seems to be changing of late with the apparent "new wave of British folk music" getting far more exposure. A direct result of which has led me to acquire, over the last six months or so, Cds by Kate Rusby (I know she has been around for a good few years now, but until fairly recently I had heard nothing of her work - your Youtube links also helped there as well!), Seth Lakeman, Cara Dillon and Karine Polwart. However, lack of knowledge meant I had no informed idea of who out of the "older" folk artists (other than Ewan MacColl) was worth investing my hard earned cash in.

So thank you again Elfman for introducing me to another fine artist in Dick Gaughan. I'm looking forward to your next Youtube video - in the meantime I would welcome any other recommendations - you appear to be a man of excellent taste! smile

Re: Currently listening to thread

Thanks JF.  I'm glad that I have introduced you to Dick Gaughan's music and that you have become a fan.  That after all was my main motivation in making and posting the video on YouTube.  There are a lot of fine artists out there making none commercial music who don't get the recognition that they deserve.

I just came across this.  Lovers of great acoustic guitar playing will enjoy it.  The technique is very unusual:
