Right on!
Though let's go on a deranged tangent shall we? With...
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-17116882
If what these scientists say is true (let's face it if I were a betting alien and saw that planet earth was covered in two thirds of water I'd probably bet that intelligent life lived in the ocean rather than on the land...or isn't there some clause that oxygen is conducive to intelligence, the dolphins and whales seem to like it just like ourselves so maybe that's true?) and if a cetacean showed enough affection towards me should the cetacean and I be allowed to marry too? We'd have to be pretty dedicated to one another but I think we could make it work if the love was strong and true...fighting over the remote would be a bit of a bitch especially with a whale...

Thanks for posting the article, that's interesting news. I think all species should be granted rights appropriate not to their species (dog or pig) but to the intelligence category their species falls in, i(dogs and pigs would be the same one and have the same rights not to be eaten etc. )
As far as sex with or marrying other animals goes I think consent is a bit of a problem Also if we have a scale of species rights in place by 2029 that is one projected year that machine intelligence is equal to humans. and if we're familiar with emotional intelligence and can produce it non organically in a machine, it'll inform the species scale of rights.
If a very powerful non emotional computational workhorse computer could decipher dolphin language, that would be amazing. There are people who are working on building a virtual model of part of a brain to study the mechanism of thought and brain architecture and when that work is advanced, knowing the brain architecture difference between species would be fascinating.
Intelligent life under water must be so curious about what life is like above it. Perhaps it's the reason these animals beach themselves and perhaps that curiosity was a darwinian selector for the intelligence level for many of the species that evolved to exist on land.

The whales are beaching themselves tragically for their land dwelling lovers like mapplehorses! Not curiosity.
I'd like to know the ages of these beached whales? Maybe they've lived enough and are trying to commit suicide?

We don't know why they beach but I love this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=pl … 9v14m0Gxh8

Maybe it's something to do with radio waves or the like? Perhaps they mess with their sonar abilities?
