The Naked Female Form

The naked female body is such a beautifull thing to look at, [as proven by the popularity of IFM], I'm surprised city's and towns don't have statues of them in the town & city centres. In Roman times they used to have statues of naked people, obviously because they appreciated the art and beauty of the human form. I think it would be better than having statues of soldiers, heads of state, people on horseback and lions etc, etc, etc. What do you think ?

Of the female statues I like the Onslow Ford Memorial that lives within site of the Abbey road zebra crossing. I'll have to take some pics of her if I go there this is the only decent one on the net.

EP that is such an adorable thing you just did there.

To compound the disturbing imagery of my imaginary po-mo kitten sculpture, remember that whole Brittany-Spears-giving-birth-on-a-bear-skin-rug debacle? Now that is an amazing statue, culturally relevant, absurdly motivated, a fascinating combination of ugly and arousing that can really get the conversation flowing. How she doth grip that dead bear's head!

I guess I will consistently tend towards interesting over smoothly beautiful, especially when it comes to statuary,and just hope they coincide often enough that my sense of aesthetic isn't overlyabused. Once in awhile a traditional statue of a woman's body will affect me deeply, and I generally like touch them regardless, but I am more likely to stand stock still for 20 minutes gazing at this incredible thing by Patricia Piccinini.

I haven't heard about the Britney sculpture before. It's really good. There aren't many sculptures that look at the experience of giving birth, and could be a public sculpture. Thing about public art is it might make an impact when it 1st appears but after a while it just melts into the background and is just there. But Britney cast in bronze in Hyde park wouldn't be ignored. Tourists would find her and touch the babies head, Everyone would do that and I like the idea of the sculpture creating that event.

I think many people like to see public sculptures of the sex they're attracted to, but even if your same sex atracted, when the sculptures are of our own sex they can have the same effect as any idealised representation of beauty and some would say, do I really need to walk passed lots of public sculptures every day telling me what I ought to look like?
    So, with public representations of nakedness we need the same appreciation of diversity we have in really good porn. because public sculptures are there a bloody long time and they are totally familiar so the nakedness becomes less 100% sexual and a little more like we would view everyone if we all walked about naked. We'd still look twice at somone who's hot, but as we know there are lots of different types of hotness and art needs to represent that.
      The other point is with such a big emphasis on appreciating the female form  the appreciation of females can get lost. As men we're encouraged growing up to fixate on this desire for form so much that we take little pleasure in any desire for us  until if we're not careful, by the time we reach adulthood a virtually inanimate "virgin" is our ideal sexual partner! That's why it's good to have a roughly equal number of sculptures and public images of nakedness that appreciate the male form or androgynous form and all the sculptures need to say something about people. because porn is elective and public sculptures aren't. So a kind of Bechdel Test for public sculptures would be a good idea. and if the new sculptures tick most of the boxes then we can relax and just enjoy  some nice work as we enjoy nice clothes or porn.
      My idea for a public sculpture that's never gonna get made looks like a huge very old tree trunk with lots of different textures and forms, but if you look at it carefully you'd see human forms of nakedness old and young and male and female smooth and rough and kind of merging in places to androgyny, but not intensionally grotesque but a celebration of living human form and life. It would be big and it would definitely get fondled Especially all the cocks cunts and boobs
   Ngaio can do the comedy version with googly eyes and wonky teeth, that would ultra cool

Oh I HAVE to tell you about the hot springs in Iceland. You can swim in acid for 40 euros - 45 if you want to use a towel.  In Australia, and I imagine most of the civilised world, they would be ringed with barbed wire and warning signs, and the staff would be wearing nuke suits for occ health.

The only other (alleged) hot spring I've tried is in Yarrangobilly, near you actually.  They say the water is at 27C all year round but I think the fire went out years ago.  I'm sure they know that, but they don't take the sign down - after they're relying on your revenue.

Dom what an amazing place... I wish those sculptures were distributed around an average city instead of confined to one little loveland, I think walking by a gorgeous giant woman having an orgasm on my way to work, or sitting on a big cock during a smoke break would add a little giggle to the day.

as far as hot springs go don't miss a little place in Santa Cruz, CA. A 10 mile hike will bring you to a giant tree next to a cold river where a hotspring has welled up to form a big spa between the roots. There is no one there except you and about a million fireflies and you kind of cuddle inbetween these huge tree roots... it's as close as one will ever get to being a proper dryad I reckon.

Viva, my hands are still a little bit lame and prone to feeling hot and sore when it comes to those larger projects, but I'm working on it. I'm just trying to figure out how to engineer the sculpture to emit heat, be soft to the touch and produce real, thick, warm and colostrum rich milk. I also want it to occasionally cough like an 80 year old chain smoking alcoholic and to swear under its breath - that's the contemporary bit.

Richard, you do have to tell me about them, absolutely - the Blue Lagoon and general hot-pots of Iceland are on a long list of things I need to do sometime soon otherwise I'm going to start ripping out my hair.  I actually was going to drive to Yarrangobilly this past weekend - had printed out the map on Friday afternoon while pretending to do work, but then realised that Liz would actually murder me if I didn't take her along: caves make her almost as giddy as dinosaurs.  I've heard a few people say the water's not that warm and jesus, it's cold here now, but I would still brave it to swim in a dinky little swimming-pool in bumfuck nowhere.  Speaking of hot springs in bumfuck nowhere: I really want to go to Burren Junction.  Something about a hot spring in the middle of a desert, surrounded by tamarind trees and a pub near by makes me pretty happy.  All I would want would be to swim in the tub, then eat a steak.  You could probably bury me after that - I would have reached and exceeded my potential and I think my life would be downhill after that one moment of glory.

Viva: there are so many things I love about Loveland and that I wish could be a part of day-to-day life.  The utter playfulness of it and the lack of reverence are maybe the biggest things.  I think that's really healthy and too often lacking.  Also: I'll add the little place in Santa Cruz on my list - that sounds brilliant.  The adventurous part of me spends time writing out lists of hot springs around the world that I'll somehow visit - consider that on the list.

Trust me - I want to/need to.  I've been reading about hikes that you can do where you break into abandoned buildings and stay on farms and then, to add to that, after watching 101 Reykjavik a few years ago, there's few things I want more than to see Reykjavik on a Friday night. The landscapes are what do it for me, too, Bobby.  There are few things I love more than isolated, barren places.  There's a photo of Bjork in the Blue Lagoon - she's alone and from memory the powerstation's in the background.  I think that's the image I keep coming back to - that mixed with bare mountains, snow, glaciers.  Lots of blues, whites and greys.  And yeah - like a sigur ros video clip, or a Mum videoclip.  (That's another thing - Mum recorded Will Summer Make Good in an Icelandic lighthouse:)
