Prostitutes in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu have begun taking karate lessons to protect themselves from violent customers and pimps.
The women say they were so fed up with abuse that they approached a local community group for help.
The organisers hope the course in the ancient self-defence technique sends a message that violence against sex workers must stop.

It's sad that we live in a world where they are being attacked in the first place, but good on 'em for fighting back.

It is sad but perhaps when the internet is available properly in india 1st via mobiles and then wimax using all our second hand iphones and netbooks they can get their customers without pimps independently that way.
My next suggestion sounds silly at 1st but isn't. They create a point of initial contact with the net client where they meet them and take along their pet dog, who'll smell the strangers intentions, telling them more than they could suss just by being alone. A loyal dog with good smell intuition and if possible a good bite would be as useful to a prostitute a guide dog is to a blind person.
From the links on the right hand side of the page you linked to, this is a pretty good idea too http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/south_asia/6064186.stm

In many parts of developing countries there's very often no fixed internet connection but quite a few people have mobile phones and connect that way. Thats not a great experience but when our phones have a full internet experience, fast video easy connection to large monitor etc and those items become second hand they'll find their way to India just like our used phones do now.

This is probably not the right forum to have this discussion, but I think you might be a little misinformed regarding India. Hence, this post (being of Indian origin, this seemed important to me).

Cell phones in India are not hand-me-downs from developed nations. The prolific use of Blackberrys, Iphones and other high end phones is rampant, especially in the cities and suburbs. India has an estimated 410+ million current cell phone users. That is substantially larger than the entire population of the United States and about 20 times the entire population of Australia. The internet is not the fastest in remote areas of India, but it is available via data cards almost anywhere.
Do not misunderstand my point here. I agree with you that sex workers will be safer if they use the internet to "meet" new clients. I just felt that you had some facts wrong about India.

Thanks for the info couchpotato, I just based that on the reported average Indian income of $500 a year, but India's enormous and 410+ million is still way short of the entire population so doesn't relate to my average income figure, but probably tells us more about how many people are rich or have above average income. Be nice when all one billion Indians are connected at video streaming speed tho, then everyone there can watch the bed shaking alarm and dancing policemen
