Labiaplasty, anyone?

http://www.alternet.org/story/136909/?page=1

An article about labiaplasty which is something I have not thought much about... but my initial feelings towards it are similar to that of breast surgery; I do not believe women should be told what to do with their body, ultimately it is their own choice, but it does disturb me when women are presented with one "ideal" and all feel they have to strive towards it. I think this website is proof that diversity is awesome!

Opinions? I know you all have them!

Absolutely, diversity and variation is wonderful. It would be an awfully boring world if all women looked alike, or all breasts looked alike, or all pussies.
Interesting article. I had never heard of this, but find it quite intriguing. Actually I have to admit that I like large labia very much. I find it a thing of great beauty.
Quite some time ago, I remember reading an article about the females of a tribe somewhere in Africa who stretch their labia starting very young. As you may know, there are also indigenous tribes who stretch their lips, their ear lobes or their necks. All to enhance their beauty.
I think it is not unlike modern western women getting tattoos, piercings, or for that matter, using eye lashes, nails, make up and fancy hairdos.
On the other hand, I am not comfortable with breast implants – maybe because that introduces foreign objects. Honestly, I am not quite sure what bothers me about breast implants.
But I also agree with you completely that it is ultimately up to the women themselves to decide what to do with her own bodies. On the other hand, I should be allowed to express my feelings about what happens to appeal more to me and what less, should I not?
I sincerely hope that I did not hurt anyone’s feelings and if I inadvertently did, I apologize.

Re: Labiaplasty, anyone?

My knee jerk reaction is to scream "Nooooooooooooooooo!!!" at the top of my lungs.

But upon examinating this further, I think that if you're that unhappy about something on yourself because *you* don't like it then it's your call as to whether you undergo this type of surgery.

However if you're doing it because others say you should or you feel you're different and freaky and want to look like everyone else then maybe a surgical procedure to your vagina isn't the answer.

Personally, I am incredibly vain about my breasts and completely in-love with how they look and would seriously consider surgery to enhance them if they began to point southward...  and I'm a happy, complete and pretty damn confident lady - also anyone else's opinion on this hasn't really entered my mentality, its how *I* feel them and what I want to do with my body.

Although when you begin to have invasive proceedures I think it may open up a whole other kettle of fish so to speak, because where do you draw the line?  Would I be tempted to have other procedures etc...?  I don't think so.

However with any cosmetic surgical procedures you need to weigh up the risks, pro and cons and decide just how important appearances are to you.

Re: Labiaplasty, anyone?

In the local paper a little while ago there was a competition to win a £3000 makeover and the winner had her before and after pictures in the paper. I wonder what they would've said if after the makeover she looked exactly the same and said 'no, I spent it all on my vagina smile

Haha, yeah, my knee jerk reaction was quite similar until I thought about it a bit!

I think the hard part is figuring out if it's what *you* want or whether it's what you feel others want.  That can be really hard sometimes, I think a lot of women feel pulled in so many bloody directions when it comes to body issues that it's not always so easy to sit back quietly and listen to yourself. But I think with decisions that involve major surgery, it definitely is something that needs serious thought. I assume most women DO give it serious thought, however.
