I'm going to play Devil's Advocate in my post. I don't think it's sexy or arousing to have suggestive lyrics in a song or portray sexual situations in a song. It is my opinion that having the above named situations portrayed in a song is demeaning to both sexes.
The singer through her or his lyrics, can imply a situation about making love or anything else about relationships without resorting to base lyrics. It's resorting to the lowest common denominator. It is treating both sexes as if they have no imagination. Everything has to be described or shown for people to get the idea. I think persons are above having everything explicitly explained to them in order to get the song's meaning. Or maybe people need these type of songs in order to satisfy some need they are lacking in their lives.

I don't see this as an 'either/or' choice between ambiguous vs. explicit lyrics. The same choice is made when it comes to sex in movies, literature, etc., and I think it would be unnecessarily limiting to categorically discount explicit portrayals of sex (or vice versa) in lyrics. Of course there are many ways to 'imply' something without showing or saying it explicitly - but I don't see how one approach is overall better or worse than the other. Explicitly portraying one thing can be a way to implicitly lead you to imagine or feel something completely different.

Saying that these kinds of songs treat people as if they have no imagination I think is a bit of a stretch. Maybe you think of these kinds of songs as being made with the intent that the listener ONLY thinks about sex; I like to think of them as instead intended to make you START by thinking about sex.

I don't think that the absence of innuendo equates to the lyrics being 'base'. It may just be me, but describing something as 'base' (usually sex) has a real finger-wagging sound to it. Whether an artist says something explicitly or implicitly, you're still thinking about it - so is it better if that thought originated from 'skyrockets in flight' as opposed to 'fuck you like an animal'? Really, I think it should just come down to 'do you like the song or not', rather than discounting things because the artist wasn't sneaky enough for your taste.

I agree. I love blatantly explicit content because it turns me on. To me, vague sexual innuendo can often come across as cheesy and makes me feel a bit embarrassed, whereas clear, strong language makes me feel aroused and then, once I'm turned on, hits me right where I want it to hit me.

I think candlelight, intimations and whispers are... an acquired taste. I like the idea and in theory I like romance but if things get too romantic in the bedroom, I definitely have to quiet an anxious part of myself that just wants to get the clothes off and fuck. The work is worthwhile as it's good to be able to receive in many different ways, but I wouldn't say one mode is more valuable than another.

I bought the 45 RPM the day I first heard the song and about a week before the Canadian censors banned the song from playing on the radio, and for some time I had a hard copy pressing of a banned song...

Oh did someone mention Brigitte Bardot? On a whim, the other night I searched out her early movies and managed to DL a couple from the 50's before she was a star. I wouldn't have recognised her. In 1952 at 18 her second (I think) film was titled in French "La fille sans voile", which translates as "the girl without a veil" or perhaps "the girl unveiled" which is a curious title, but it was released in English as "The lighthouse keeper's daughter". Not a great film, but definitely worth a watch, and she's spectacular to say the least, wearing a bikini that was 20 years ahead of its time in terms of what it didn't cover. She even reveals a breast in one shot, in a mainstream movie in 1952! I don't imagine it got through the Hayes code in the USA but I'm curious whether it got cinema release in the UK and Australia. Also a reasonable resemblance to our Laney.

But if you're a younger reader not familiar with the charms of Brigitte, you have to see "And God created Woman", an excellent film and a perfect portrayal of a precocious minx. She is one beautiful woman.
